PITTSFORD SWIMS BY GATES CHILI TO FINISH UNDEFEATED
Sectionals Next Stop for Defending Section 5 Champs
The Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team cruised by Gates Chili 109-68 to cap their second straight undefeated season. Captains Greg Conklin and Brian Possee were double winners for Pittsford, as the Panthers took first place in ten of 12 events.
The February 1 meet at Mendon Pool opened with both teams honoring their graduating seniors. It was an especially moving ceremony for Pittsford, as the team remembered Jason Wilcox, a senior who died in a car accident just before the season. The seniors presented a bouquet to Wilcox’s parents, who attended the meet.
“Throughout the season and in years to come, our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers are with you,” Head Coach Mark Morris said.
Pittsford was in control from the opening event, with Possee, Conklin, Kenny Pink and Taylor Topping taking first in the 200 medley relay. Ben Silverstein, Mike Moran, Sean McManus and Jeremy Amon posted second. In their last dual meet before Sectionals, the Panthers were in high gear, as Charlie Ruff, Jimmy Prezzano and Andrew Kuter went 1,2,3 in the 200 free. Possee, Moran and Nathan French followed with a 1,2,3 finish in the 200 individual medley. It was Conklin, Moran and Kuter in the 100 free. And the Panthers also claimed the top three spots in backstroke, with Possee first, Silverstein second and Derek Lasher third.
Other highlights for Pittsford included Conklin and Topping going 1,2 in the 50 free, Sean Hingel winning the diving competition, Topping’s first place in the 100 fly and French’s win in the 500 free. The 400 free relay team of Conklin, Ruff, Amon and Possee closed the meet with the Panthers final win of the day.
“It feels good to be going out on top,” Amon said. “It gives us a bit of momentum heading into Sectionals, where we know we’ll be facing Fairport and Penfield again.”
Conklin said it was “awesome” to complete another undefeated season. “I’m ready. I want Sectionals tomorrow,” he added.
Pittsford’s Junior Varsity also notched another undefeated season, downing the Gates Chili JV 105-53. Matt Corsetti was first in both the 50 free and 100 free. Dan Locke won the 200 individual medley and the 100 fly. Other first place finishes included Andrew Maier in the 200 free, Ari Kapilivsky in the 500 free, Ben Myers in the 100 back and Charlie Shaddock in diving.
The next test for Pittsford will be at the Webster Aquatic Center on February 18 and 20, where the Panthers are the defending Section 5, Division 1, Class A champions.
