MAKE IT NINE IN A ROW AT BEECHER!
PITTSFORD SWIMMERS REPEAT AS TOP TEAM AT
BEECHER INVITATIONAL
Make it nine years in a row for the Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team as they again were the top scoring squad by a wide margin to win the John Beecher Invitational in Elmira on January 14 and 15.
Brian Possee repeated as winner of the “Outstanding Competitor” award at Beecher, taking the 200 free in a time of 1:48.43 and the 100 free in 49.13. Possee also anchored the first place 200 and 400 free relay teams.
Some of the region’s best swimmers took part in the tournament at the Elmira Free Academy, with 18 teams competing for points in three divisions. Pittsford dominated the scoring in Class A with 428 points, with runner up Greece Athena scoring 222 points.
The Panthers were well represented in every race. The 200 medley relay team of Ben Silverstein, Kenny Pink, Taylor Topping and Andrew Kuter placed third in the opening event, missing second by just 4/100th of a second. Possee followed with his first win in the 200 free, with Greg Conklin fifth. Silverstein and Pink then placed 4,5 in the 200 individual medley (IM).
In the finals in the diving competition, Pittsford’s Wills DeMoulin and Sean Hingel both moved up in the standings, DeMoulin at 6th place and Hingel in 11th.
Pittsford was dominant in most of the post-diving events. Topping took fourth for the Panthers in the 100 fly, then Possee and Amon went 1,2 in the 100 free. In the 500 free, the longest race of the day, Jimmy Prezzano was second in an extremely close contest, with Prezzano never more than a body length behind the eventual winner. Conklin was third and Nathan French fourth for Pittsford in the 500.
Next came the 200 free relay, with Conklin, Amon, Topping and Possee teaming up for first place with a time of 1:32.29. In backstroke, Silverstein was second in another exciting race, just 12/100th of a second behind Todd Winchell of Greece. Ruff and Moran rounded out the scoring for the Panthers in backstroke, placing third and fourth. Pink then posted a seventh for Pittsford in the 100 breast. The tournament ended with Conklin, Amon, Ruff and Possee putting up a winning time of 3:22.77 in the 400 free relay.
The walls of the Elmira Free Academy, lined with Invitational and pool records, told the story of Pittsford’s dominance over the years. The Panthers own the records in nine of 12 Invitational events, along with many pool records. While no new records were set this year, Head Coach Mark Morris was pleased with the outcome, especially since Pittsford was coming off an emotional win against Fairport just two days earlier.
