PITTSFORD TAKES SECOND AT OWEGO
Pittsford Second at Tough Owego Competition;
Cruise Past Brighton and Eastridge
Competing against some of the best teams in New York State, the Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team posted a strong across-the-board performance to capture second place at the Owego Invitational on December 18.
Just 11 points separated the top two teams as Pittsford, last year’s tournament winner, was nipped by Shenendahowa, a team the Panthers will be seeing again at the State Championships later in the season. Eight schools competed at Owego, including five of New York’s top ten.
Some of the closest and most exciting races had Pittsford’s Brian Possee going head-to-head with Fairport swimmer Jeff Wood. In the 200 free, Wood posted a pool record time of 1:43.40, just ahead of Possee’s 1:43.68. Wood’s 51.93 in the 100 fly edged Possee’s 52.10, as both swimmers had outstanding performances at Owego.
Pittsford’s other top finishers included Ben Silverstein, whose personal best time of 57.17 captured second in the 100 back, Charlie Ruff’s third place finish in the 100 back, Jeremy Amon, who took third place in the 50 free with a time of 23.36 and Greg Conklin, fourth overall in the 100 free.
The top 16 swimmers in individual events scored points for their teams, along with the top eight “A” relay teams. Once again, Pittsford’s depth and balanced attack was evident, with the team coming within striking distance of a second straight win at Owego, where the Panthers set four pool records last year.
“Win or lose, we knew it was going to be a good meet,” said Silverstein. “It was a chance to see the best teams and to help us get ready for the rest of the season.”
In the opening 200 yard medley relay, Pittsford placed fifth behind the team of Silverstein, Kenny Pink, Taylor Topping and Charlie Ruff. Possee then took second in the 200 free, with Jim Prezzano eighth and Nathan French 13th. In the 200 IM, Silverstein, Ruff and Pink finished 8, 9 and 10, and Sean McManus completed the scoring at 16th.
The balanced scoring continued, with Amon third in the 50 free, Conklin fifth, Topping 12th and Andrew Kuter 14th. In addition to Possee’s second place in the 100 fly, Topping came in sixth, Mike Moran seventh and Dan Locke 16th. In the 100 free, Conklin’s 52.09 to take fourth edged teammate Amon by 1/100th of a second. Kuter was 12th in the event. Prezzano, French, Matt Fetten and Ari Kapilivsky all scored points for Pittsford in the 500 free.
In addition to Possee’s second place in the 100 fly, Topping captured sixth, Moran seventh and Locke 16th. Pittsford had three of the top six swimmers in the 100 back, one of the key events for the Panthers in the point total. Silverstein and Ruff finished 2,3 with Moran sixth. Matt Lobban was 13th in the event.
In the closing relay, the 400 yard free, the team of Conklin, Silverstein, Amon and Possee took fourth place. In the diving competition, Will DeMoulin was 11th overall and Charlie Shaddock 15th.
“It was exciting to compete against so many good teams and to show them what we could do,” said Pink.
Pittsford tops Brighton, 108-75
The Pittsford Panthers took first place in nine of 12 events to earn a 108-75 victory at the new Brighton pool on Tuesday.
Possee posted a double win for the Panthers, taking both the 200 and 500 free events. Other first place finishers included Pink in the 200 IM, Amon in the 50 free, Sean Hingel in diving, Topping in the 100 fly and Silverstein in the 100 back.
Pittsford posted wins in two relays. Silverstein, Pink, Topping and Kuter took first in the 200 medley and Conklin, Topping, Amon and Possee won the 200 free relay.
Pittsford 108, Eastridge 50
At home on Thursday, Pittsford downed Eastridge 108-50 as the Panthers cruised to their third straight dual meet victory. The Panthers took first place in ten of 12 events, sweeping the top three spots in five races. Possee was again a double winner for the Pittsford finmen, taking both the 100 fly and the 100 back. Other first place finishers included Ruff in the 200 free, Moran in the 200 IM, Topping in the 50 free, DeMoulin in diving, Conklin in the 100 free, Amon in the 500 free, and Pink in the 100 breast.
In the JV competition, it was Pittsford 94, Eastridge 63.
