PITTSFORD SWIMMERS RECEIVE ALL STATE, ALL COUNTY RECOGNITION
Ten members of the Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team have been recognized with All State or All County honors for their achievements during the recent championship season.
All State and First Team All County honors went to seniors Dan Locke, Andrew Maier and John Lyman and freshman Morgan Marin. All four were part of the Panthers sprint relay team that took second place at the state meet on Long Island.
Also named First Team All County were Brandon McManus, Emmett Jacobi and Tyler McCrobie. Three more Panther finmen – Lee Silverstein, Alex Branch and Matt Tanchick – received Second Team All County honors.
Head Coach Mark Morris announced the selections at the team’s post-season banquet at Oak Hill Country Club on March 18. Pittsford celebrated another undefeated season that included their sixth straight Monroe County Division I title and seventh straight Section 5 Class A championship.
Pittsford has won 71 straight dual meets, one of the longest winning streaks in Section 5 history.
The swimmers and divers presented Coach Morris with a plaque recognizing his 36 years of service going back to 1973, when he was coach of the Pittsford Sutherland junior varsity team. The plaque noted that Morris has compiled an overall record of 535-30-1 with Pittsford, a 95% winning percentage.
The team also recognized two of their graduating seniors. Locke was voted “MVP” by his peers and Maier received sportsmanship honors. Locke and Maier had previously been recognized with Individual Sectional Sportsmanship Awards. The Panthers also received the Rochester-Monroe County Swimming and Diving Officials “Team Sportsmanship Award” at the Section 5 Championships at Webster.

PITTSFORD SPRINTS TO SEVENTH STRAIGHT SECTIONAL CROWN
(Click on headline or attached handout to see full results.)
Pittsford swimmers dominated "the long and the short of it" as they won the sprint relay, took first and second place in the 50 free and first and second in the 500 distance event to lead the way to their seventh straight Section 5, Class A crown. The Panthers used their trademark blend of speed and depth, veterans and younger swimmers, to outscore their nearest rival, Fairport, by more than 100 points (455 to 352.5).
Andrew Maier, Morgan Marin, Brandon McManus and Tyler McCrobie opened the meet by taking third place in the 200 Medley Relay with a State qualifying time of 1:41.05. McManus came right back in the 200 free, taking fourth place with 1:48.53, just 1/100th of a second ahead of teammate Emmett Jacobi (1:48.54) in fifth. Pittsford’s Alex Branch also scored points for the team, coming in 13th (the top 16 individual swimmers all contribute points at Sectionals).
In the 200 Individual Medley (IM), which features the most versatile swimmers because they swim all four strokes in one race, A. Maier took third with 2:02.50. Also doing well for Pittsford in the IM were Matt Tanchick, fourth for the Panthers with 2:05.15, and Lee Silverstein, right next to him with 2:06.13 for fifth place. Charlie Harrington also scored points for the Panthers in the IM.
Pittsford’s sprinters got to “strut their stuff” in the 50 free, with Dan Locke taking first (21.87) and John Lyman second (21.97), matching each other stroke for stroke, and both making State cut times. McCrobie won the consolation heat (ninth place) with 22.98. Marin followed with another medal for the Panthers, second place in the 100 fly with 54.12, another State qualifying time, and Ryan Horey was 10th in the event.
Lyman’s 47.93 in the 100 free took third place honors, with Locke right next to him in fourth with 48.17 (both State cut times), as the two freestylers continued their friendly competition that stretched out all season. McCrobie was seventh in the event and Kevin Maier also scored points for the Panthers in the freestyle.
As it went all season, the lead kept changing hands in the 500 free between Pittsford’s two distance aces, Jacobi and McManus. They both had outstanding times, Jacobi in first with 4:48.25, McManus next to him in second with 4:50.92, both qualifying for States in the event. One of Pittsford’s up and coming young swimmers, Shea Ransford, took eighth place and Josh Kapilivsky turned in a personal best time of 5:11.73 for 10th overall in the 500.
Lyman, McCrobie, A. Maier and Locke turned on the afterburners for the 200 free relay, slicing through the pool and the competition with a time of 1:27.26 for first place, a State cut time and All America consideration.
“The highlight of the meet was the 200 free relay and to make All America consideration was awesome,” Locke said.
Following the sprint relay, A. Maier took sixth for Pittsford in the 100 back (57.72), with Chris Wideman eighth, Alan Chuang 10th and Ransford 13th.
In the 100 breast, Marin was third with a time of 1:04.83. In yet another Pittsford match-up, Tanchick was fifth in the breaststroke with a time of 1:05.49, just 5/100ths of a second ahead of teammate Silverstein, who placed sixth with 1:05.54. Harrington was 14th for the Panthers in the event, also contributing points.
The closing 400 free relay was one of the closest, most exciting races of the day, with the lead changing hands several times. It took an outstanding swim by Cory Zorsch of Greece, the eventual “Swimmer of the Meet,” to just touch out Pittsford for first place. Greece won with 3:15.91, just 3/100th of a second ahead of the Panthers relay team of Marin, McManus, Lyman and Locke at 3:15.94. Greece and Pittsford will face each other again at States, along with three other Section 5 teams that made State cut times in the 400 free relay at Sectionals.
Earlier, in the diving competition, Alex Byrd captured sixth place for the Panthers with 356.10 points, and Sam Randall was 12th with 284.60 points.
The meet ended with the traditional jump into the pool by the entire winning team, coaches included. Assistant Coach Rich Schmitt was ready this year, with a pair of swim trunks under his dress pants.
Head Coach Mark Morris didn’t mind the dunk this year, because in addition to the seventh straight championship, Pittsford also took home the team Sportsmanship Award. The honor, bestowed by the Monroe County swimming officials, recognizes sportsmanship by the team, its coaches and parents of the swimmers.
“It’s the professional highlight of my career, to be associated with this team and this community,” Coach Morris said. “To receive this award is just a great reflection on the entire community.”
Also receiving individual Sportsmanship Awards were senior co-captains Locke and A. Maier, both of whom hope to continue their swim careers in college.
"We were looking forward to Sectionals all year and this win was a great accomplishment,” Maier said.
Locke agreed. “After all the months of hard work, to get the seventh straight Sectional crown and to keep the Pittsford legacy going, was pretty sweet,” he said.
The Sectional Finals took place February 14 at the Webster Aquatic Center. Next for the Panthers, who completed another undefeated season and hold one of the longest winning streaks in Section 5 history (71 straight dual meet victories) is the state competition, March 6-7, on Long Island.

Top Class A swimmers progress to state meet
John Boccacino • Staff writer • February 15, 2009
WEBSTER — As Section V's premier Class A swimmers were being honored on the podium after winning sectional championships Saturday, several champions used the stage to dedicate their titles to coaches and loved ones.
Serving as a fitting end to Darrell Byerts' 31-year Webster coaching career, Zack Wahl sent his coach out a winner by capturing sectionals in Byerts' old event, the 100 butterfly, in 53.02 seconds.
With his mother at home recovering from leukemia that is in remission, Pittsford Sutherland's Emmett Jacobi outlasted teammate Brandon McManus to win the 500 freestyle.
And after capturing their seventh-consecutive Class A team title, the Panthers dedicated their latest crown to coach Mark Morris, who dove into the Webster Aquatic Center's pool still sporting his traditional white shirt and burgundy, blue and white-striped tie to celebrate.
"I dedicated this race to my mom, and my dad was here taping the races for her; I'm so happy she gets to see me win, that was for her," said Jacobi, 15, a sophomore who sliced 14 seconds off his freshman time to win in 4 minutes, 48.25 seconds. "I've imagined this feeling so many times, winning sectionals and the team title, but this is better than I imagined."
It was a day of celebrations as Section V's highest classification will send 10 teams and 28 individual finishers to the state competition, March 6-7 in Nassau, Long Island.
"It's really nice to be able to end with a sectional championship; this is something I've dreamed about since I was in seventh-grade," said Wahl, 18, a Webster Thomas senior and one of seven state-bound Lakers.
"The last couple of years I've gotten second at sectionals so many times, and I just wanted to win one for myself and for Coach Byerts," Wahl said. "This win ties everything together and can give him some closure" at the end of his career.
In an incredible showing of depth, Class A will send five 400 freestyle relay teams to states, led by the hard-charging Greece Athena/Arcadia team. Anchored by senior Cory Zorsch, Athena/Arcadia took nearly six seconds off their preliminary time to edge out Pittsford in 3:15.91, three-hundredths of a second faster than the Panthers.
While Greece's 200 free relay punched its ticket to states on Thursday, for the first half of the 400 relay it appeared the team would be left behind. As Zorsch dove into the pool on his anchor leg, Athena/Arcadia sat in fifth. Thanks to his incredibly efficient stroke and shimmers, Zorsch closed the gap and delivered the win.
"Just what I needed today, to race from behind," a smiling and exhausted Zorsch said while clutching his Swimmer of the Meet trophy after winning titles in the 100 free (46.69, an All-American consideration time), 100 back (52.43) and 400 relay.
"This is surreal, and that race was ridiculous; everything was perfect. I knew we had this (performance) in us, but this was our best time by six seconds. That's unheard of, an amazing drop."
Just as impressive was the last of Section V's state qualifiers. Fairport's 400 relay team eked into states with a 3:20.94 performance, qualifying by the slimmest of margins, one one-hundredth of a second.
"I've never been a part of anything that close, and that late in the race. The whole experience was amazing and unreal," said senior Jake Horowitz, 17, who swam the lead leg of both the 200 medley relay and 400 relay state-bound teams.
"I couldn't see the clock when our last guy (Brendan McLaughlin) touched. So I looked at coach (Mike Kennedy) and waited for his reaction, and when he started jumping up and down, and I knew we'd qualified. That was an awesome feeling."
Penfield's Tom Doser was honored with the fourth-annual Donna Jean Mooney Memorial Award, which honors a junior or senior swimmer/diver who displays hard work, initiative, sportsmanship and commitment to the sport.
"I'm very emotional about receiving such a great award," said Doser, 18, a senior who wrote his winning essay on how swimming has given him a better work ethic. "Just being honored in the name of such a great person is a huge reward. I was drawn to the sport because it's about whoever works the hardest will improve in the pool."

The match between the two Section 5 leaders was expected to be a good one and the fans that crowded the bleachers at the Webster Aquatic Center on January 15 weren’t disappointed. The opening medley relay was almost a dead heat, with Webster edging the Panthers team of Andrew Maier, Morgan Marin, Brandon McManus and Dan Locke by less than 1/10th of a second, 1:43.28 to 1:43.37. Alan Chuang, Lee Silverstein, Ryan Horey and Owen Drinkwater took third for Pittsford, showing the depth that has kept Pittsford on top for the past six seasons.
Jacobi then posted his first win with a time of 1:50.95 in the 200 free, with McManus taking third for the Panthers in the event. Matt Tanchick followed with a second place in the 200 IM (2:09.62), with Chuang in third place.
The 50 free was next, another exciting event for the Panthers, as their sprinters all hit the wall within split seconds of each other to sweep the top three spots. Tanchick was third in the breaststroke for the Panthers.
Marin, McCrobie, Lyman and Locke closed the meet with a 3:27.24 to win the 400 free relay.
The Panthers Junior Varsity also racked up another win, easily defeating the Lakers JV swimmers.
In addition to their 7-0 record (with three dual meets to go before Sectionals), the Panthers are also winners of this year’s Owego Invitational and the “Fab 4 Invitational” at Bath. The Panthers hold one of the longest winning streaks in Section 5 history, 68 straight victories in dual meets under Head Coach Mark Morris.

LOCKE HAS A "FAB DAY" AT "FAB 4 INVITATIONAL"
(Click on the headline or the attached handout to see the full Class A results)
Dan Locke won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events and was a member of two winning relay teams as the Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving team won the second annual “Fab 4 Invitational.”
With just five weeks to go before Sectionals, the competition at Bath-Haverling High School on January 9-10 was an opportunity for Section 5 swimmers to show their best. Locke took the challenge to heart, winning four gold medals, the most of any swimmer in his class. He twice came from behind in individual events to touch the wall first.
Asked about his achievements, the senior co-captain said, “It feels great.”
Locke noted that Pittsford will be swimming against some good teams in the coming weeks, including Webster and Canandaigua. “We should have some close meets,” he said, “but after today, we’re feeling confident.”
Pittsford scored a total of 619 points at the Invitational to take the Class A crown. Fairport was second with 489 points and Webster third with 377. The top 16 swimmers in each event scored points for their teams, along with their “A” relay teams. A total of 12 teams, four each from Classes A, B and C took part in the meet.
The Pittsford relays provided some of the highlights of the day. John Lyman, Andrew Maier, Tyler McCrobie and Locke teamed up to win the sprint relay, the 200 free, in a time of 1:29.57. In the 400 free relay, Morgan Marin, Brandon McManus, Lyman and Locke took first with a state qualifying time of 3:18.92. The Panthers also took third place in the 200 medley relay, with Maier, Marin, McManus and McCrobie turning in a time of 1:43.86.
Also taking home medals for Pittsford in individual events were Matt Tanchick, third place in the 200 IM (2:06.32); Marin, third in the 100 fly (56.10); Lyman, third in the 100 free (49.67), and Emmett Jacobi, with a state qualifying time of 4:53.23 for second place in the 500 free.
