Pittsford Swimming & Diving strong at States
Pittsford Swimming and Diving closed out their season in fine form. After winning their 10th Sectional title a couple of weeks ago they went to Buffalo for the State Championship. 9 swimmers represented the team and finished 7th on 81 points behind Fordham Prep at 199 and Tappan Zee at 124. Prelims were held on March 2, followed by Finals on March 3. The competition was fierce with the best swimmers in the state. The race of the meet was the last relay. Fordham and Tappan Zee tied in the 400 Free with identical times of 3:06.99. The time broke the state record set back in 1993 by New Hartford. An incredible end to a great season and both teams earned Automatic All American honors.
Leading off the meet was the 200 Medley Relay team of Shea Ransford, Brett Eslinger, Matt Tanchick and Austin Ling (1:38.47) came in 6th . Fairport swam well to earn second with the team of Charlie Morales, Evan Zheng, John Holden and David Howard. In the 200 Free sophmore PJ Ransford posted 1:42.17 to earn 6th place with Jeffrey Williamson, Victor, earning 3rd in 1:40.00. In the 200 Individual Medley Matt Tanchick swam strongly to earn 2nd in 1:54.05, Shea Ransford earned 12th in 1:58.89. Jason Gerlach, Penfield, swam 1:55.50 for 8th place and Kevin Tobey, McQuaid, was 1:58.79 for 20th.
In the 1 meter Diving Junior Dylan Marin performed well with 401.75 points and 14th place. Dylan was initially ranked 26th out of the field of 31 divers going into States. Marin continued to exceed expectations and opened up finals with a Back Dive Tuck that earned 8's. Diving Coach Duane Green commented, "this season has been remarkable, Dylan and the team of divers have been remarkable, I am proud of everyone of them". In the 500 Free Section V was represented by two swimmers in the final, Victor swimmer Jeffrey Williamson came in 2nd with 4:32.97 and PJ Ransford in 4th with 4:36.80. Trevor McCrobie came in 48th with 4:58.13. Next up was the 200 Free Relay Fairport came in second close behind Fordham Prep. Pittsford came in 12th with their team of Matt Tanchick, Timo Krapf, Austin Ling and PJ Ransford (1:29.18).
In the final individual event Matt Tanchick swam a personal best with 3rd place in the 100 Breast earning All American Consideration at 57.79 and Brett Eslinger earned 30th with 1:01.25. At the end of the meet Pittsford Coach Mark Morris remarked, "this season has been amazing, the boys have worked hard all year and were rewarded with another Sectional title and 9 state swimmer. A great team performance."
The meet wrapped up with the 400 Free Relay and to the amazement of the roaring crowd the top 2 teams broke the 19 year old record and posted identical times to wrap up an excellent season. Fairport earned 3rd place in the relay to finish in 4th place in the overall standings including both public and private high schools.

D&C States Article
BUFFALO — Jeffrey Williamson and Evan Zheng spent last year’s New York State Swimming & Diving Championships peering up at the winner on the medal platform.
The view from the top step was much more enjoyable on Saturday.
Williamson, a Victor junior, won the public title in the 500-yard freestyle in an All-America Consideration mark of 4:32.97 and Zheng, a senior at Fairport, teamed with classmate John Holden and juniors David Howard and Charlie Morales to claim first in the public rankings in the 200 freestyle relay (1:25.94) at Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
The quartet also took second in the 200 medley relay (1:35.25) and 400 freestyle relay (3:10)
“I’ve always been standing there a step or two below the winners at the awards ceremony,” said Zheng, who is headed to Yale and was a cog in three top-four relay finishes for the Red Raiders in 2011.
“It’s awesome standing up there,” said Williamson, who also snagged second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.00). “That’s what I’ve worked for my entire swimming career for since I was 7 years old.”
Williamson was bested by two exquisite performances by Canisius sophomore Jack Boyd for the Federation crowns. Boyd swam All-America times of 1:38.27 and 4:30.31 in the 200 and 500 freestyle relays, respectively.
“It’s nice that I was first in the public schools,” admitted the 2010-11 All-Greater Rochester Swimmer of the Year. “But as a competitor you don’t view it as first unless you’re the first to touch the wall. (Boyd) is an incredible swimmer and a great rival so hopefully we can continue the rivalry and I will progress next year.”
Junior Matt Tanchick of Pittsford took second in the 200 individual medley (1:54.05) and swam a personal-best 57.79 to earn third place in the 100 breaststroke.
Section V finished second to Section I and grabbed 11 top-five spots.
The meet was highlighted by two state records, including co-champions in the 400 freestyle relay. Tappan Zee-I and Fordham Prep each sprinted to 3:06.99 performances, shaving nearly a full second off the 19-year-old mark. The standing-room only crowd darted their heads toward the scoreboard and roared in unison when the identical digits popped up.
Victor’s Brian Shanahan yelled, “That was the best finish I’ve ever seen in my entire life,” as swimmers whipped out their cameras to take pictures of the screen.
That wasn’t the only perfect finish.
“Our team has had pretty good camaraderie and all push each other to succeed six times a week at practice and the entire offseason,” said Zheng, who carries a 99 average, aced the ACT and was honored as the State Meet Scholar Athlete. “It’s pretty rewarding to go out as a senior on the top of the stage.”

Pittsford earns 10th straight crown
Despite having the top seed in several events, and a nine-year streak as sectional champion, Pittsford boys swimming head coach Mark Morris came into the Section 5 Class A finals with plenty of anxiety.
“I wasn’t sure we were going to get to number 10,” Morris said.
The team who was causing the long-time Panther coach sleepless nights? Fairport, who handed Pittsford their only loss in a dual meet this winter.
The Red Raiders dished out everything they could to the Panthers but in the end, the Section 5 trophy was heading back to Pittsford for another year.
The Panthers scored 471 points to take first at Saturday’s finals at the Webster Aquatic Center. Pittsford was lead by junior Matt Tanchick, who earned swimmer of the meet after winning the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke and was part of two second-place relays.
“Sectionals is something we always try to get up for,” Morris said. “The kids swam well, good prelims and fantastic today. I am real proud of the relays, and all of the kids efforts today.”
The Panthers have used their depth to build their reputation as the best program in Section 5. This was on display Saturday as Pittsford had at least one athlete finish in the top-five in each race.
After narrowly losing to Fairport in the opening 200 medley relay, Patirck Ransford won the 200 free. Ransford later won the 500 free in dominating fashion taking first by over 15 seconds and earning All-American consideration after finishing in 4:35.97.
“Our team really pulled together,” Tanchick said. “It was a great thing to win my races, but it was even better to have someone pushing me hard in both my races. They really helped me get to where I needed to be today.”
The Red Raiders pushed the Panthers the entire afternoon as Charlie Morales, John Holden, Alex LaPoint and David Howard edged Pittsford’s relay by six tenths of a second in the opening race. Senior Evan Zheng punched his ticket to states by winning the 100 free (46.99).
Morales came back to overtake the field and win the 100 back in 53.53. Morales, Zheng, LaPoint and Richard Waterhouse closed out the meet by winning the 400 free relay (3:13.47).
“I was really nervous, I was really scared because I didn’t think we were going to win,” Morales said about the relay. “We went out as hard as we could and it was great to win. We were very happy.”
Penfield’s Jason Gerlach gave Tanchick a run for swimmer of the meet as the senior earned the 100 fly title and teamed with Joe Mulvehill, Jeff Doser and Chris Gnam to win the 200 free relay. Brockport freshman Nick Olson held off Howard to win the 50 free in 21.83.
“It felt good to know that I could put a great time out there and win today,” Gerlach said about his performance in the 100 fly. “Winning the 200 free relay was nuts. We went in just hoping to get a best time, and to win is a consolation.”

Pittsford wins Class A swim title- D&C Article
WEBSTER — The way that Matt Tanchick explained it after the Section V Class A Boys Swimming Championships, there were two ways he and his Pittsford teammates could have looked at the rematch of sorts with Fairport.
One, was uh-oh.
Pittsford went the other way.
“This year it was more important,’’ Tanchick said Saturday at the Webster Aquatic Center. “We lost that meet to Fairport.
“This was a chance to show what Pittsford is really made of. We did a great job of that.’’
Pittsford pulled away from Fairport to win the Class A sectional title or its equivalent for the 10th consecutive year. Tanchick, a junior at Pittsford Mendon, was named the meet’s outstanding swimmer after he produced two times for All-America consideration.
The 2011 Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester team member also was the outstanding swimmer at last season’s Class A sectional meet.
“It’s a huge deal to be able to say that,’’ Tanchick said. “There’s definitely some fierce competition.’’
Tanchick’s swim of 1 minute, 52.37 seconds in the 200-yard individual medley reset the Section V record, after Fairport’s Jon Roberts went 1:52.55 nine years ago.
The 100 breaststroke of 57.81 by Tanchick was a dominant performance. The next four finishers swam qualifying times for the state meet, but Tanchick was the only one under a minute.
“It’s pretty impressive,’’ Pittsford Mendon sophomore Patrick Ransford said. “It helps to have someone like that to swim with everyday.’’
Ransford was the winner of the 200 (1:41.98) and 500 (4:35.97) freestyle finals. A one-two finish in diving by Dylan Marin and Sam Randall also helped Pittsford score 471.5 points.
Fairport, the runner-up, finished with 401.
The Red Raiders raised the possibility of a new sectional champion after they edged Pittsford 94-92 a month ago at Fairport. That ended an 84-league meet win streak for Pittsford.
“I wasn’t sure we would get to No. 10,’’ Pittsford coach Mark Morris said about the team’s string of sectional titles.
Fairport’s 200 medley relay of Charlie Morales, John Holden, Alex LaPoint and David Howard then opened the sectionals with a first-place finish.
“It was good to get a win, a good tempo,’’ Morales said. “I wished it could have carried through. A meet is a meet, things happen.
“Our team gave it our all. It was the best time of my life beating Pittsford. When we came here, we wanted to win, but Pittsford put together a good performance.’’
Morales, this time with LaPoint, Evan Zheng and Richard Waterhouse in the 400 free relay, helped Fairport close with a win. They swam 3:13.47 in lane seven of eight.
Penfield’s 200 free relay of Joe Mulvehill, Jeff Doser, 100 butterfly sectional champion Jason Gerlach and Chris Gnam set a school record during their victory in 1:27.74.
“We did exactly what we wanted and we got the win along with that,’’ Gerlach said. “That is something like the cherry on top of the ice cream.’’
Brockport freshman Nick Olson won the 50 freestyle to become the team’s first state qualifier in six years and sectional champion in 14 years, according to former coach Scott Fake.
A total of 32 individuals or relays beat state meet cut times during the preliminaries alone, including Wilson junior Liam Fitzstevens, a third-place finisher in the 100 backstroke final.
“This will be one of the strongest teams we’ll take in awhile,’’ Section V boys swimming and diving coordinator Keith Sheilds said to the qualifiers. “We’re going to make our mark.’’

Pittsford win Sectionals Diving
Pittsford won Class A Sectionals Diving at Gates Chili last weekend. The Pittsford divers were outstanding and won 49 points for the Swimming and Diving team. Dylan Marin racked up 444.30 points and qualified for States, his teammate Sam Randall was second at 380.55, the third diver from McQuaid was 354.05. Ben Goodfriend had his best performance of the year, finishing in 7th place (299.60) and earning 12 valuable points for the team. Sean Reilly also performed well and finished in 20th place. The 49 points provide Pittsford Swimming and Diving a significant lead entering the swimming portion of sectionals this weekend. The swimming Prelims are held on Thursday with Finals on Saturday. The competition is going to be fierce with Fairport and Pittsford competing for the top position in Section V.
Diving coach Duane Green was delighted with the performance "the boys were outstanding throughout the year, this is icing on the cake - their effort and energy level was outstanding." Prior to the meet volunteer Diving Coach Mark McMann called his friend Ron Marriott at the University of Michigan, he was an Olympic medal winner. Marriott gave the divers a pep talk prior to the diving and his advice worked.
Sectional diving consists of 11 individual dives of varying levels of difficulty with 5 scoring judges, the highest and lowest score for each diver do not count in the scores. Dylan Marin and Sam Randall have competed closely throughout the season and sectionals followed that trend with Marin and Randall very close through the first four rounds. Randall started out strong with scores of 7.5 and 8 in his first two dives. Dylan was then able to build a lead and grow it over the middle rounds to claim the sectional title and a trip to States. Dylan in his 6th dive lit up the scoreboard with the five judges average scoring an 8. In his 9th dive he surpassed this dive with an Inward dive Pike and 2 judges scored it 9.
Ben Goodfriend had a great meet regularly scoring 5.5 for an array of dives and steadily working his way up the rankings to finish in 7th.
At the end of the meet Coach Morris commented, "I was very proud of their efforts, all of the boys were excellent."
Brighton also competed strongly in the concurrent Class B sectionals. Their top two divers Scott Lazeroff (415.20) and Corey Neas (368.55) came in second and third, with Victor diver Kyle Shares in first place at 427.20.
In MCCI diving the previous week Pittsford showed off its future divers at the JV level finishing 1-2-3. Michael Thiemel had an outstanding performance and finished in 1st place, followed closely by his team mate Chris Lillis in second place and Charlie Mack in third place.

Pittsford celebrates at MCCI; Tanchick breaks pool record
Pittsford swam at Monroe County Coaches Invitational (MCCI). MCCIs are the end of the season for swimmers that generally do not swim at Sectionals. Many of the Pittsford swimmers had swam sectional qualifying times, but the Pittsford team is strong and sectional space is limited. The depth of the Pittsford was in evidence at the 100 Free where 9 of the top 10 seed times were from Pittsford.
The meet started with two thrilling 200 Medley relays. The team of Sam Roberts, Parker Neale, Will Beeley and Chris McPherson (2:01.74) narrowly lost to Penfield (2:00.47). The next relay featured the team of Max Johnson, Fisher Curran, Chris Rudmann and Alex Abrams with a tough challenge against the Fairport medley relay team. Pittsford touched in 1:52.69 with Fairport just behind in 1:52.95. Two great races to kick off the meet. In the 200 Free Cesar Neri finished in 2:05.44 followed by Michael Locke in 2:07.99. In the 200 IM Grey Ankenman led the field in 2:22.16, followed by Langdon Kessner (3rd 2:24.50), Max Johnson (7th, 2:25.40) and Chris Rudmann (9th, 2:29.96).
Alex Abrams led the field in the 50 Free at 24.80 with his teammates Fisher Curran, David Wideman, Ryan Alaimo, and Spencer Byrd close behind. The 100 Fly was Chris Rudmann at 1:04.13 supported by Will Beeley at 1:13.52. There were 13 heats for the 100 Free with the last race being dominated by Pitstford with the 9 swimmers grouped closely - Alex Abrams won in 56.01.
Coach Mark Morris commented, "these boys have worked hard all season and this is a great event to close the JV season and transition to Sectionals in a couple of weeks."
Two days later the team were back together for their final dual meet, visiting Spencerport. The highlight of the meet was the 200 freestyle. 34 years ago All-American Rich Saeger had set the Spencerport pool record in 1978 - he won the 1984 Olympic gold medal in the 200 freestyle relay. Tanchick also won the 100 Back in 56.83. Pittsford won the meet 105-71.
Pittsford went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM, Charlie Harrington (2:12.03), was followed by Jesse Benett (2:18.83) and Koby Waterstram (2:19.10). Diving was spectacular with Dylan Marin delighting the crowd and judges. He notched up 272.15 points with Sam Randall in second at 241.95. Morgan Marin won the 50 Fly in 56.12 with 2 Spencerport swimmers close behind and Vince Criscuolo (1:00.36) and Chris Dawson (1:03.77). PJ Ransford won the 100 Free in 50.90 and Brett Eslinger at 51.24, Cesar Neri (56.72) and David Wideman (57.91). In the 500 Free Trevor McCrobie won in 5:06.12, with Roddy Hughes (5:24.18) and Jesse Bennett (5:24.90). In the 200 Free Relay Pittsford won in 1:34.11 (Brett Eslinger, Vince Criscuolo, Morgan Marin and Austin Ling) close behind in second at 1:35.64 was the team of Alex Abrams, Timo Krapf, Jack Thiemel and PJ Ransford. 100 Breast is the final individual event and was a close event with Brett Eslinger (1:05.21), Jack Thiemel (1:06.53) and Austin Ling (1:08.58).
At the end of the meet Coach Morris said "it was amazing to see the record broken - 34 years is a long time for any record to stand."

Raiders win final relay, down Panthers
Fairport beat Pittsford in an enthralling meet. From the first relay where Fairport took first in 1:38.60 and third in 1:42.69 the packed house knew that this was going to be a great meet. The only time that the pool was quiet was diving; for the majority of the meet the crowd was on its feet cheering on their respective teams. There were also some neutrals in the crowd from Penfield, Victor, Canadaigua, and Irondequoit wanting to see the competition. The Pittsford team came in second in the first relay at 1:40.65. The first two teams both qualified for States. These were just the first two of fifteen state qualifying times. After the first event Fairport led 10-4 and this proved to biggest lead of the entire meet. PJ Ransford jumped in the pool and won the 200 Free with a state cut of 1:46.57, with Trevor McCrobie (1:51.24) and Morgan Marin (1:51.83) the meet was tied 15-15. Next up was 200IM, Matt Tanchick won in 1:59.58 beating Alex LaPoint, both swimmers made the state cut. Pittsford was in the lead 25-21. But it did not last long. Fairport went 1-2-5 in the 50 Free and suddenly were back up 32-30. Timo Krapf and Austin Ling swam well in 22.91 and 23.10 to earn third and fourth, but Fairport was too strong.
Next up was diving and the noise abated. You could hear a pin drop as the boys twisted and turned. Dylan Marin and Sam Randall came in 1-2, but Fairport filled out the 3-4-5. This was Pittsford's final home meet of the season so Senior Recognition was held following the diving. Pittsford recognized their 6 seniors: Chris Dawson, Charlie Harrington, Josh Kapilivsky, Morgan Marin, Scott Mayall, and David Wideman.
Now Pittsford was back in the lead, but their lead was a slender two points and it was soon gone. Faiport went 1-2 in the 100 Fly with Pittsford in 3-4-5 with Brett Eslinger, Timo Krapf and Charlie Harrington. The 100 yard Free was the only event without a state cut time. The points were split with Morgan Marin (49.31), Will Dawson (49.83) and Austin Ling (51.00) taking 2-3-5. The points were split again in the 500 Free. PJ Ransford dominated the event winning by thirteen seconds in a time of 4:45.42. Fairport escaped with second and third and were still up by 2. The 200 Free Relay seemed to be the turning point. Pittsford were anchored by PJ Ransford and he stormed back on the last leg to outtouch Faiport. PJ swam a 21.71 on the final leg to win the race by 0.26. His team of Matt Tanchick, Timo Krapf, and Will Dawson celebrated with him. Pittsford up 72-68. Fairport stormed back in the 100 Back with 1-3-4 and jumped up 72-68, Shea Ransford took second in 56.73 to keep the meet close. The final individual event was a nail biter. Matt Tanchick dominated the early stage, but Adam Clouthier was not finished and stormed back. Tanchick held him off to grab the points (1:01.95), followed by Will Dawson (1:03.69) and Vincent Criscuolo (1:05.59). Suddenly the meet was tied up 86-86 with one relay remaining. It was winner take all in the final event. In a tremendous race the first two teams both made states, but it was not about times and Fairport won in 3:17.13, with Pittsford close behind in 3:18.23.
An incredible meet. Pittsford had lost, but the competition made everyone stronger. Sectionals should be interesting this year to see these two teams go head to head again.
Pittsford returned to the pool on Tuesday at Webster and started a new dual meet win streak.

Marin and Randall were supported well by the other divers: Michael Thiemel, Sean Riley, Chris Lillis, Ben Goodfriend, and Charlie Mack. Coach Green and McMann commented at the end of the meet "our divers are excellent, every day they come to the pool to learn and their hard efforts are paying off."

Pittsford's next meet is Thursday at Penfield, then it is their toughest test of the season with Fairport visiting Mendon on Saturday.

Pittsford dominated the meet, which included 5 high school teams in an early season invitational. “I am proud of the hard work every diver and swimmer put into preparing for this important meet,” said Coach Mark Morris, veteran head coach of the Pittsford Boys Swimming & Diving Team and recent inductee to the Section 5 Athletics Hall of Fame. Pittsford dominated the meet early during the diving competition. Their 6 Pittsford divers, novice to veteran, performed a repertoire of 11 dives. For the younger divers on the team, this was the first time for this range of dives and many hours of hard work preceded the meet. Strong performances by veteran divers Sam Randall and Dylan Marin led in team scoring, finishing in the top 2 spots. Second year divers Ben Goodfriend and Michael Thiemel showcased a number of new dives with higher degrees of difficulty. First year divers Sean Riley and Charlie Mack both put forth a great effort to learn new dives in order to qualify to compete. “The results speak for themselves,” stated Pittsford Assistant Coach for Diving, Duane Green. “Every one of our divers showed improvements and expanded their dive sheets as a result of participating and placing 2 divers in the top 5 was icing on the cake. This is a great team of divers, and it’s a pleasure working with these young men.” A number of exciting races took place in the swimming, beginning with the 200 Medley Relay. In a hard fought matchup, Pittsford’s medley relay team of Shea Ransford (back), Matt Tanchick (breast), Morgan Marin (fly) and Will Dawson (free), achieved a second place photo finish with a time of 1:42.59, Dawson touched the wall a fraction of a second behind the winning team from Maine-Endicott. Pittsford excelled in a number of races with first place in five individual events and the 200 Free Relay, plus two swimmers making multiple state cut times. Pittsford won the first three individual events of the meet, with PJ Ransford winning the 200 Free with a state cut time (1:46.82), Tanchick won the 200 IM with a state time (1:58.58) and Austin Ling out touching rivals in the 50 free (23:09). BP Post Article: Bryan's Backyard; Pittsford, Brighton aim for hardware
Pittsford, N.Y. —
Can anyone beat Pittsford?
That is the question on the minds of the top teams in Class A as the Section 5 boys swimming season began last month. Over the next two months, it will be answered before they all come together for sectionals in February.
One look at what the Panthers have coming back and another sectional title could be heading to the trophy case at Mendon.
Matt Tanchick leads the way. The versatile junior is the defending Section 5 champion in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
The Panthers have plenty of strong freestyle swimmers including Patrick Ransford and Morgan Marin. Pittsford boasts the top two divers in Class A in Sam Randall and Dylan Marin.
Fairport appears most likely to push Pittsford at sectionals.
The Red Raiders are led by talented junior Charlie Morales. Morales is defending Class A champion in the 100 backstroke and was part of the 200 medley and 400 free relays that placed third at the state meet last season.
Senior Evan Zheng teamed with Morales to win the 400 free relay at the Section 5 meet and was the runner-up in the 100 free. The Red Raiders also have talented relay swimmers in Sam Rice and David Howard.
Sophomore Tom Kirch will lead a young Rush-Henrietta team this winter. Kirch qualified for the state meet in the 200 IM and 100 breast last season.
If McQuaid is going to keep their multi-year unbeaten streak in dual meets alive, Kevin Tobey is going to play a key role in the team’s success. Tobey is the defending Class A champion in the 100 fly and competed in four events at the state meet last winter.
Victor will try to unseat Brighton atop Class B this winter. The Barons have won sectionals two of the last three seasons.
Blue Devil junior Jeffrey Williamson, the defending Class B champion in the 200 and 500 free, was Section 5’s top swimmer last season. Senior teammate Ben Chappell will try to build off a season that featured three sectional titles.
The Barons meanwhile will rely on senior captains James Premo, Robbie Marvald and Owen Karl. Brighton also returns the top diver in Class B in Scott Lazeroff.

Pittsford wins Water Polo title in Thrilling Style
Pittsford wins Water Polo title in Thrilling Style
Pittsford, N.Y. —
In a thrilling final game Pittsford Boys Swimming and Diving Team won the water polo invitational tournament it hosted last weekend. More than 200 swimmers from 8 local teams competed in the tournament over two days. The teams and spectators raised money for the American Diabetes Association. The tournament was first held in 1973 by Pittsford’s first swim coach, Fred Rockow as a response to his own sons diabetic condition. Combining team donations and admission receipts, the benefit netted more than $2,600 to help send diabetic children to summer camp.
Mark Morris the Pittsford Panthers head coach commented that "the focus of the weekend was to raise money for diabetes. The skill level is continuing to improve in Monroe County and some clubs are now starting to spring up so that the players can continue to develop. It was an exciting final game." The competition has become the unofficial opener of the boys’ swimming and diving season, and is intended to promote fun and good sportsmanship in addition to raising money.
On Friday, Webster and Fairport advanced to the semifinals over Victor and Greece in morning competition, while Penfield and Pittsford eliminated Gates Chili and McQuaid in the afternoon session.
Play started on Saturday with an alumni game, where many players from the last 38 years came out for an exhibition game. This game was followed by Pittsford defeating Webster (17-1) and Fairport defeating Penfield (24-5). In the consolation match Penfield held off Webster in a close match eventually winning 9-3 to secure third place. Penfield had been a finalist for the previous three years.
The final match was highly anticipated. Both teams had high expectations and were looking to establish themselves. Pittsford came out strong in the first period and jumped out to a 3-1 lead, Fairport came storming back and built a 4-3 lead, but Pittsford was not going to be denied and tied it up at half time 4-4. The packed swimming pool was loud and the Fairport fans were in full voice. In the third period the Pittsford underclassmen again came out strong and scored 5 goals with no reply from Fairport (9-4). In the final period the upperclassmen battled for superiority and fought for every loose ball. The teams traded goals, but Fairport could not close the gap and Pittsford held on to win 13-7. The game ended with warm handshakes and tired swimmers ready for the upcoming swim season.
Following the game, one of the Pittsford swimmers remarked "When you have games like this, against Fairport, our athletes were able to uphold the tradition of Pittsford - it was a team effort. It was an admirable fight."
Coach Morris expressed appreciation for the participating teams and for the many volunteers who contributed their time and talents over the busy holiday weekend. Officials included Scott Shields, Ralph Simpson, Doug Garnam, Kurt Schwarz, Aram Salehi, Andrea Zucchiatti, and Dr. Stefan Lucas. Caroline McPherson and Linda Locke ran the concessions stand, and fundraising efforts were coordinated by Nomi Kapilivsky. Morris also thanked members of the Pittsford Girls & Boys Swimming & Diving Team for running the clock and keeping score.
The boys swim season is off to a great start with all of the teams practicing hard. Pittsford is seeking its 10th successive sectional title. Their first meet is on December 6 at Mendon High School vs Irondequoit.
