Perfect Storm's Travel/Tournament Teams Coaching Philosophy
Doing what’s best for the team: We believe strongly that coaching decisions should be based on what’s best for the team as a whole.
Player Evaluations: We believe player evaluations are very subjective and more of an art then a science. Professional sports spend millions of dollars evaluating players in professional drafts and there are many well documented cases where they make mistakes and pick the wrong players. So we think parents should understand this before trying out for any travel team. We also recommend that players try out for more then one travel team so they find the best fit for their child.
Building Players Confidence: We are a big supporter of building players self-confidence.We think self-confidence can act as a multiplier for player’s ability. We believe in focusing on the positive and building players up instead of tearing players down. We want all players to be able to hold their heads high and feel good about them selves. We also believe that players should be given some freedom to make their own choices if they have proven that they can handle it. (For example base running and green lighting a player)Talent with out hard work:We are a big believer that talent will only take a player so far it takes hard work and lots of repetitions along with self –confidence, mental preparation, a lot of heart, a good attitude, a short memory, composure and a host of other attributes to become a special player.
Students of the game: We believe all serious players should be students of the game and study. Good players should do research about the game and always be learning new things.
Fundamentals: We believe strongly in teaching the core fundamentals of fielding, throwing, hitting, and base running as a foundation to build on before overloading the players with minute details.
Playing Time: We think playing time should be earned and based on a player’s skill set, attitude, consistency, hustle and potential to improve.
Being the best that you can be: We believe players should not compare themselves to other players but become the best player that they can become. Work on controlling the things they can control and not worry about the skill sets or talents of others. We also believe that a player should never let the comments of others including coaches, parents, fans, and players to have a negative impact on their performance. A player needs to learn how to have a good sense of self.
Mental preparation: We need to have players raise their expectations. We also think that players need to be in the moment and focused on making the current play not focused on them selves. We need players who are relaxed and not afraid to fail. Players need to be aggressive and want to make plays. We also believe in using visualizations and relaxation techniques to improve player’s overall performances.
Goal Setting: Players should have individual goals and the team should have team goals
Putting players in winning situations: We don’t like to put players in positions in game situations when they have not had sufficient work in practice. Of course sometime due to players being absent from games this can happen despite our attempts. We want players to feel ownership for their positions early on and not have kids feeling unnecessary pressure that they will lose their job or be put in an unfamiliar position.
Pitching and hitting is taught in practice: Pitching and hitting is taught and corrected in practice sessions and not from the 3rd base-coaching box during a game or from the dugout or the stands. We want players in the moment completely without too much background noise to distract their focus. In other words We don’t want batters trying to change their swing for the 1st time in a game. Its ok to tell batters things like to keep your eye on the ball or good cut just not too much on technique or other comments that either put more pressure on the batter or distract their focus. We also want the players to know during the game that everybody has confidence in them.
Every Player is an individual: We cannot fit kids into one mold. Some players may need different approach then others. Also players may feel more comfortable doing some things slightly differently then currently accepted methods. The game is always changing and one year accepted methods change back and forth. In other words not everything is a science and there are many ways to skin a cat.
Open Communication and feedback: We believe that issues shall be addressed openly and honestly. We understand that not everybody will agree with 100% of the coaching decisions. We also understand that a lot of the fun of watching the game is to coach from the stands. We think it’s normal and acceptable to have different opinions then the coaches. With that being said we also think that important to voice your opinions in a private e-mail if warranted in a professional manner after the heat of the moment has subsided (maybe a day or two afterwards). We don’t want the issues to affect the team in a negative way. We always want to do what I believe is best for the team.
We all make mistakes: We believe that parent’s kids, coaches and umpires are all human and will all make mistakes so weI think its important that we do not dwell on the mistakes and do our best to move on.
Respect for the Game: We think its important when players, coaches and fans step onto a softball field that they take a second and step back to remember the good memories, the range of emotions and the pure beauty of the game. We think it’s important to remember that these moments are fleeting and can sometimes get lost without a true respect for the game. The game is bigger then any one parent, fan, player or coach and every effort should be made to maintain and promote the game. We also think that everyone should make an effort to give back to the game because the game only survives with the support of volunteers.
