Chmiel Remembered:
A bench with a plaque that reads: "EDWARD G. CHMIEL WWII BRONZE STAR, April 1, 1920 - November 30, 2008, Mr. Peabody Little League PVC 2012" now sits on a small brick pad just outside right field at James Street Park.
Chmiel, a war hero and the chief founder of Little League in the Tanner City back in 1951, was memorialized with the special dedication on Tuesday by city officials, local veterans, members of the Polish community, friends, and several young members of Peabody Little League who gathered at the park.
Chmiel was fondly remembered as a humble man who was dedicated to his hometown, family and country, and gave back in numerous ways to the community over the years.
"When Ed passed away, his family very kindly requested contributions be donated to a fund in his memory. After thoughtful deliberation, the Peabody Veterans Council members decided a fitting tribute to Ed would be a park bench placed at the James Street Little League Park, the field where Ed spent many countless, happy years coaching hundreds of Peabody children in the fine art of Little League baseball," said Peabody Veterans Council President Bob Dunne.
"Our hope in dedicating this bench is that people will read the plaque...and think and remember a man who gave so much to his country and came home and gave so much to his beloved city," Dunne said.
"It's days like this that I love being Mayor, when we honor a Peabody legend like Ed Chmiel," said Mayor Ted Bettencourt, who fondly recalled stories of his grandfather coaching the Red Sox against Chmiel's Yankees, which also had a number of his uncles on the team.
Bettencourt noted that family stories of Chmiel not only recalled him being an expert at baseball, but someone who truly cared for all the players.
The newly installed bench provides a clear view of the batter at home plate and the scoreboard across the field.
