Patriots Post Wins Over Monroe, Barren, CAL (By Don Meador, The Citizen-Times) Patriot fast pitch softball cruised to an easy win, survived a district nail-bitter and rallied from an early deficit to cap off a win during first round play Friday at the North Laurel Invitational. ACS’s 10-0 win over Monroe, 1-0 shut out of Barren County and 4-2 win against Christian Academy of Louisville lifted the young Patriot team to a 10-2 record. The Patriots’ week started with a late game explosion against the Lady Falcons of Monroe County. Leading 4-0 heading to the bottom of the six inning, ACS’s bats erupted for six runs to close out the game. The barrage started on a double from Maleiah Cornwell followed by a triple from junior outfielder Haley Nichols. Singles from Bailey York, Caley Melton, Emma Napier and Whitney Edwards led to four ACS runs. After a walk, senior Amy Wanta ripped a single to the outfield, plating Napier and Edwards and ending the game by virtue of the ten-run rule after the fifth inning. Two days later, ACS squared off against a Barren County team considered as the early season district favorite as well as a strong regional contender. “Barren is very good, “ Coach Brad Bonds said. “They are probably one of the best teams we have faced all year defensively.” Facing a pitcher that was not overpowering with speed but very solid at placement, ACS struggled to reach base despite making solid contact throughout the game. “We hit the ball very good but they were line drives fly balls and grounders,” Bonds explained. “Barren made the plays.” The Patriots lone run came in the second frame. Sophomore Stephanie Edwards reached second after taking a pitch off the outfield fence. Maleiah Cornwell executed a sacrifice bunt allowing Edwards to move to third. York followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to center thus allowing Edwards to tag up and race home from third. The run would be enough. With Cornwell tossing a gem from the mound---two hits in seven innings of work----ACS held on for the win. “Maleiah did a fantastic job,” Bonds added. “It was probably the best game she has thrown all year.” The win did not come without drama as the Trojanettes (7-5) threatened on a pair of occasions. In the fifth inning, Trojanette Courtney Thomas stood at third with team mate Alyce Salley at second with one out. Cornwell induced Casey Spears into a pop-up bunt before running a fast ball by Haley Lindsey for a threat ending strikeout. In their final at bat, Thomas stood at third only to see the game end at Cornwell tossed her ninth strikeout of the game. ACS finished with four hits, one strikeout and a walk. Looking to square off against some of the state’s best teams, the Patriots traveled to London Friday for the North Laurel tournament. Rain stole the show washing out play Saturday but not before the Patriots got pas Christian Academy. “CAL was a very aggressive offensive team,” Bonds said. “They put some pressure on us defensively in the first couple of innings.” In the first, ACS opened a 1-0 lead before CAL responded with two runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The opposition threatened again before ACS started to turn the tables. “We had to work out of a jam in the bottom of the second,” Bonds added. “By the second time through the line-up, we learned their hitters, relaxed and started to make the plays.” After learning how to “locate” her pitches against the CAL (4-4) line-up, Cornwell took control. With her offense plating three runs in the middle innings, ACS took the game. “It was a good game for us in that we were able to come from behind and play,” Bonds pointed out. “We had to manufacture runs. I really thing that by playing some close games during out Chattanooga trip and being able to play under pressure was a key for us in being able to pull that game out.” The Patriots are in action Thursday with a home contest against Franklin-Simpson (5-5). Friday, the team travels to Clark County for a weekend tournament.
