The Healing Power of Hockey Click on the link above for a true story about how the game of hockey helped re-unite two towns in Canada that had for years been torn apart by a racially charged murder of Helen Betty Osborne. This is a great read, and I highly recommend it -- several pages long but well worth the time. Written by John Stackhouse, photos by Patti Gower. Monday, October 12 Patriots Come Up Big On Opening Day A youthful but potent Patrick Henry squad got on the board early and never looked back, manhandling a scrappy Manchester team 4-2 in the season opener for both teams. Liberty eighth-grader Brandon Mills (2 goals, 2 assists) and seventh-grader Taylor Mustian (2g, 1a) provided all the scoring the Patriots would need to seal the victory. Manchester outshot the Patriots by 31-29, but Matt Colombo stood tall in net to preserve the victory. Stellar play by Colombo, including a spectacular cross-crease kick save, contibuted to his .935 save percentage. In his first appearance for the Patriots, freshman DJ Jenks and returning Liberty eighth-grader Zach Stuart proved to be effective on the Josh Thomas-led PH defense. Look for sophomore Thomas, who also plays PH football, to bring additional punch and leadership to the Patriots squad this season. Moon receives scholarship award

The Patriots squad, again missing two senior defensemen, fell behind early and ultimately came up short against CH/Manchester in the D3 Championship game this past Sunday at Shooters.
The key absences spelled difficulty for the Patriots in defending their goal as well as trouble effectively moving the puck out of their zone and toward CH/M's.
PH goalie Matt Colombo wowed the crowd early with several athletic stops that kept the Patriots close through the first half of the game. CH/M led 1-0 leading into the second period.
Tyler Valasek tied the game a minute into the second, but Trey Darnell put CH/M ahead for keeps less than two minutes later.
Over the next five minutes, three unanswered goals by CH/M put the Patriots back on their heels and looking for answers that they ultimately never found.
At 9:58 forward Dakota Hawn sparked the Patriots when he hammered home a doorstep feeder from Valasek to draw the score closer at 5-2.
CH/M defenseman Joe Eck countered that with another goal to re-extend the lead to four.
In a game lacking for Patriots' highlights, senior Stuart Eisenrauch provided one to remember in his last shift with PH's squad. With the final seconds ticking away, Eisenrauch gathered a loose puck in the slot and drove it past goalie Alex Vasiliou with :11 remaining.
A nice memory, to be sure, and an excellent example of how the Patriots always keep grinding till the final buzzer and never EVER quit. Eisenrauch will be sorely missed, but his example of effort and sportsmanship will live on with the younger players as they carry the program forward.
Losses in big games hurt, but considering that half of PH's game-day roster were middle-schoolers, the Patriots have nothing to hang their heads about. And in an era where more clubs are forming "combo" teams using players from two schools, there's a certain amount of unity and pride that goes along with all being able to play under one banner: the Patriots.
Scoring: Valasek (1g, 1a); Hawn (1g); Eisenrauch (1g); Brandon Mills (1a).
Penalties: Valasek (2:00 holding).
Shots: PH 25, CH/M 25.
