Hartsville dug a hole for itself with an early loss in the Dixie Ponytails (U-12) softball tournament by losing to Cheraw. Wednesday, Hartsville was able to right its ship with its second win in as many days against Cheraw.

Hartsville earned a spot opposite Sumter in the district finals with a 4-0 win. Hartsville and Sumter will play a best-of-three series to determine the district champion. The first two games were scheduled for last night (Thursday). A third and deciding game, if necessary would be played Friday at 6 p.m. at Byerly Park.

Wednesday, in the championship game of its sub-district, Hartsville pitching was dominant against Cheraw, striking out the first eight Cheraw batters and 11 of the first 12.

Christian Stokes was the first Cheraw batter to reach first base safely, leading off the top of the fifth inning with a walk. Hartsville wasn’t setting the bases on fire either, as Cheraw held Hartsville to just one hit the first four innings, a single to Haley Wellman in the second.

Hartsville broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning.

Michael Gainey and Taylor Pittington each singled, with Brooke Jacobs following with a run-scoring double. Wellman added her second hit of the game, with all four runners scoring in the inning.

Cheraw ended Hartsville’s no-hit bid in the sixth inning as Chole Roddy reached on a one-out single.

Hartsville 13, Darlington 3
Hartsville advanced to the final game, defeating Darlington 13-3 in its first game Wednesday.

Hartsville led 3-0 after three innings, but broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five times. The Darlington pitcher issued three walks in the inning, with all three coming around to score.

Wellman and Logan Andrews had a pair of key singles in the inning.

Hartsville 8, Cheraw 0
Faced with losing in the sub-district, and not playing in the district tournament that they will be hosting, the Hartsville Ponytails, sent Cheraw a message, blanking the last undefeated team in their bracket.

Hartsville rolled to an easy 8-0 win.

Hartsville struck early, scoring four runs in the second. Walks to Jacobs, Michael Gainey and Katie Parker loaded the bases with two outs. As evident by the three walks, the Cheraw pitcher was having some control problems.

That continued as a pair of wild pitches allowed both Jacobs and Gainey to score. A fielding error brought in Parker and another wild pith allowed Andrews to score the fourth run of the inning.

The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth inning as Cheraw pitchers continued to have problems finding the plate. Walks to Jordan Bizzell and Pittington led to runs, as did a single to Gainey.

Cheraw managed just two base runners in the game.

After the first inning, Hartsville and Turbeville were tied at 2-2.

Hartsville dominated the rest of the game outscoring Turbeville 17-0, earning a 19-2, four inning win.

Price, Kirkley, Gainey, Wellman, and Andrews all had a pair of hits for Hartsville.

Stokes singled and scored, while Mallory Reynolds walked and scored and Dacia O’Neal double and scored as Cheraw went up 4-3.

That was all the scoring. Hartsville had a chance to tie the game in the sixth. Bizzell walked and went to third on Pittington’s one out double. Cheraw was able to keep Hartsville off the board.
