With head coach Evan Smith home with the flu, the Pirates took the field for their season opener against the Northern Guilford Nighthawks.
With several key starters and leaders not suited up for the game due to injury, the team seemed very nervous and unsettled from the opening face-off. The Pirates fell behind early and were never able to tie or take a lead the rest of the game. The game was filled with turnovers and penalties. The Pirates never got into any kind of offfensive rhythm because of the turnovers. This resulted in a great deal of pressure on the defense as the Nighthawks dominated time of possession.
