August 5, 2009:  PRLL 11's WIN SECTION 4 TITLE (reprinted from the Journal-News):

FISHKILL - Katherine Gilbride walked back to the mound after a brief meeting with catcher Ana Maria Ferrera. The tying run was on first base and there were no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Pearl River 10-11 year-old All-Star team leading Beekman 1-0 in the Little League Section 4 championship game yesterday at Shepherd Park.

Pearl River needed three outs to secure the win. Gilbride knew what she had to do, and her team was counting on her. Then she struck out the next three batters with an apparent ease that masked the tension.

"I was nervous the last inning, and the last batter," Gilbride said. "But I thought we had a good chance to win it."

Pearl River heads back to the state tournament at the Habecker Complex in Pittsford, where they will try to win the championship that eluded it last year. Pearl River is scheduled for two pool play games on Saturday - at 11 a.m. against Solvay/Lakeland and at 2:30 p.m. against South Shore.

"They really wanted to make it to states again," Pearl River manager Liz Wolfe said. "They knew they had a good chance to win. They were pretty psyched."

Pearl River scored in the first inning on a double by Haley Giarmita. The just-turned 12-year-old had the only extra-base hit of the game, driving in Gilbride.

After three hits in the first inning (Emily Figueroa had the third hit) Pearl River had only one hit the rest of the game - another single by Gilbride.

Gilbride pitched a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts. And she kept her poise throughout the tight contest.

"I just take a deep breath and think positive," Gilbride said. "And I think of having my team behind me if the other team hits it."

Good defense kept Pearl River in charge.

"I was kind of nervous in the beginning, because we weren't hitting off their pitcher," second baseman Courtney Ocasal said. "When we got into the last inning and there was one out and someone on base, I was nervous that she was going to keep stealing. When she wasn't and we got the last out, I was just so excited."

With the state tournament starting in only a few days, Pearl River is going to get back to practice before the big weekend.

"It's exciting and fun," Gilbride said. "I'm here with all my friends and we've been together for a while, and we got really good and we improved a lot.

"But we are still going to practice a lot and go to the batting cages. We're also going to relax."

N.Y. STATE TOURNAMENT:

August 8, 2009:  (re-printed from the Journal-News):  Katie Vinci had two hits and two RBI as Pearl River defeated Solvay/Lakeland 7-2 in the Little League 10-11 year-old state tournament at the Habecker Complex in Pittsford to gain a split of the day's two games. Pearl River bowed 5-4 in extra innings to South Shore in the other game.                        "I was excited about the (two-run) hit (that gave Pearl River a 2-0 lead) and a little shocked that I got such a good one," Vinci said. "I had just struck out, so it was a big confidence booster."                           Haley Giaramita went 2 for 3, including a double in the fourth innning that drove in Courtney Ocasal and Kristen McGarvey to push the lead to 4-0.  Sarah Henry had a two-run double in the fifth inning, bringing in Giaramita and Vinci.  Katherine Gilbride was the winning pitcher.               "They were a lot bigger and taller than us," Vinci said. "I thought they'd really pound the ball all over the field, but our pitcher took command and we managed to get seven runs.  "Getting this win made us confident that we can play with anyone."                          In the other game, South Shore rallied after Pearl River had taken a 4-3 lead on a two-run single by Giaramita in the fifth (driving in Emily Figueroa and Gilbride).  "Haley is our power hitter and once she got that hit, we got excited about maybe winning the game," Ocasal said.                            Pearl River's next game is tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Fairport at the Habecker Complex.

August 10, 2009:     Pearl River 10, - Fairpoint 0, 4  (re-printed from the Journal-News):   In pool play of the Little League 10-11 year-old state tournament at the Habecker Complex in Pittsford, Katherine Gilbride allowed one hit in a game shortened to four innings.  She also went 3 for 3 with an RBI-double.                               "I was really trying to hold them to zero so we could end the game early," Gilbride said, "and my team really helped me out."            Emily Figuera went 2 for 3 with two RBI. Kristen McGarvey went 2 for 3 with one RBI.       "I thought we had a good chance at winning once the third inning came," McGarvey said. "We scored four runs in the second and four more in the third."      Pearl River will face East Meadow today at 6 p.m.

August 11, 2009:  Pearl River, 14 - East Meadow, 8.  Details to follow.  Pearl River advances to the semi-finals Wednesday night against South Shore (Staten Island).

August 12, 2009:  South Shore 7, Pearl River 1:  (re-printed fom the Rockland Journal-News):   In the championship game of the Little League 10-11 year-old state tournament at the Habecker Complex in Pittsford, Katie Vinci had two hits and scored Pearl River's only run on a single by Sarah Henry in the first inning.   "I was excited because we got it started and led 1-0," Vinci said.      Pearl River's lead lasted only until the bottom of the second, when South Shore scored all its runs.  "We made a lot of errors," Courtney Ocasal said, "and the other team kept hitting. It was disappointing."                         Neither team scored after the second inning and Pearl River out-hit South Shore 7-5 for the game. Alexa Candelaril had two hits. Emily Figueroa and Katherine Gilbride each had a hit.                      Pearl River's run through the postseason ended after winning district and sectional championships, then getting all the way to the state final.                "I was mad that we lost, but excited that we made it this far," Vinci said.
