Saturday, July 18, 2009: Ramapo, 5 – Suffern, 4: Ramapo and Suffern opened up the 2009 Billy Kayser Memorial Tournament with a close 5-4 contest, as Ramapo pushed home the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning on clutch doubles from Joe DeLuca and Alex Perich. Ramapo had taken an early lead on two first inning runs produced by hits from Justin Rabrich, Chris Perich and Danny Shpigler. They made it 4-1 in the third, with key hits from Chris Perich, Shpigler and Nick Casabianca. Suffern came roaring back to tie the game with 3 runs, all with two out, in the fourth inning, on big hits from Cooper Meldrim, Ryan Goodman (double) and Aidan McLaughlin. Clutch relief pitching from Ramapo’s Alex Perich and Danny Shpigler in the fifth and sixth innings sealed the win. PITCH COUNTS: RAMAPO: Justin Rabrich, 19; Nick Cimillo, 77; William Tenzer, 7; A. Michael Castello had two hits and scored two Nanuet runs. Pitcher Dan O’Sullivan struck out six and held Nyack-VC to two hits. Sunday, July 19, 2009: Ramapo, 12 – Pearl River, 0: Ramapo’s 9-run fifth inning, highlighted by a 2-run double by Danny Shpigler, removed all doubt from this contest. Justin Rabrich and Alex Perich also drove in two runs each in the big inning. C.J. Iametti went 4 for 4 with 3 RBI for Ramapo. Alex Perich, with relief help from Shpigler and brother Chris Perich, threw the shutout, keeping the big Pearl River bats in check. Pearl River, coming off a championship tournament in West Nyack in which they did not play a day game, seems to prefer the night life. PR’s Christopher Sabino did his job, banging out two hits. WN pitcher Kevin Montague went the distance for the win, with 5 strikeouts in four innings, and also had 2 hits and scored 2 runs on offense. Nyack-VC’s Anthony Haera had a hit and scored NVC’s line run in the second inning. Both teams turned dazzling double plays in the field. West Nyack turned a 6-4-3 double play off a fine stop by the shortstop and a quick relay by the second baseman. Haverstraw, 8 – Nanuet, 2: Haverstraw broke open a close, well-played game with 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Blake Rockman delivering the key hit, a booming bases-loaded double to deep left-center field. Omar Rodriguez started the rally with a base hit (his second of the game). Rodriguez also pitched a fine game for Haverstraw, with relief help from Alex Henriquez and Joel Duran. Nanuet starter Michael Castello kept the game even until leaving due to the pitch count in the fourth inning. Stony Point, 11 – South Orangetown, 4: Defending 2007-08 Kayser Tournament champ Stony Point put up a quick four runs in the first inning, and added four more in the fourth inning, en route to an 11-4 victory, in the tournament opener for both teams. Doubles from Raymond Pacella and Michael Bahrs paced the first-inning rally, and Pacella doubled again in the fourth, in front of a triple from Steve Greeley, who also had an RBI double in the second inning. Michael Bahrs scored 3 runs for SP. South Orangetown’s Jack Shannon led off the opening inning with a double, and scored with good baserunning. Stony Point pitchers, however, only allowed one more hit the rest of the game. Jon Weissberg, Michael Hovagim and Thomas McGivney scored the other SO runs. Monday, July 20, 2009: Haverstraw, 8 – West Nyack, 2: Haverstraw starting pitcher Alex Henriquez held West Nyack to 3 hits while striking out 7 batters in 5 innings. Closer Joel Duran then struck out the side on 12 pitches in the final inning to seal the victory. Haverstraw's big inning was the third, when they scored 4 runs with the help of doubles from Felix Urena and Carlos Guzman, and a single from Luke Gamboli. Jacob Garrison had 2 hits for haverstraw. Austin Kaplan (double) and John Longo (single) scored the West Nyack runs. PITCH COUNTS: HAVERSTRAW: A. Henriquez, 79; J. Duran, 12. WEST NYACK: J. Longo, 55; A. Kaplan, 62. South Orangetown, 12 – Suffern, 9: In a wild second inning, Suffern scored 8 runs and South Orangetown scored 6, but it was SO's 4-run fourth inning that proved to be the difference. Doubles by Jon Weissberg and Ryan Quick, along with a base hit by Jack Shannon, were the big hits in SO's decisive inning. Tom McGivney scored 3 runs for South Orangetown, while Quick scored two. Shannon and Kyle Nolan had 2 hits each. For Suffern, Cooper Meldrim and Dustin Price had 2 hits each, and Tre' Warren had a double. Wednesday, July 22, 2009: Nanuet, 8 – Nyack-Valley Cottage, 6: Nanuet broke open a close game with a 3-run rally in the fourth inning, behind key hits from Chris Van Schaick and Sean Gick. Nanuet had taken a slim 3-2 lead in the second inning on a single by Dan O'Sullivan and a double by Kevin Lynn. Nyack-Valley Cottage's Tyler Fay had 2 hits and scored a run, as did Colten Stemkowski (2 runs). Evan Fiore also had a hit and scored a run for NVC. PITCH COUNTS: NANUET: S. Gick, 62; D. Pearl River, 3 - Stony Point, 2: In the tightest defensive game of the tournament, Pearl River broke a 0-0 tie with 3 runs in the fifth inning on big hits from Ryan Buchan, Christopher Sabino (double) and Conor McCabe. Kevin Doorley, who pitched into the 5th inning, was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Patrick Kennedy (save). Stony Point's starting pitcher Joshua Von Holt also pitched a strong game. SP made it close with 2 runs in their half of the fifth inning, with Von Holt getting the key hit. John Freeman and Von Holt scored the SP runs. Raymond Pacella had 3 hits in the game for SP. Friday, July 24, 2009: Stony Point, 17 – Suffern , 0: Stony Point unleashed a 13-hit attack in a 4-inning game to defeat Suffern, 17-0. Four Stony Point pitchers, Stephen Greeley, Brian Whooly, John Morina and Raymond Pacella, shut down the Suffern bats on one hit. Ryan Goodman had the Suffern hit. SP's Greeley (3hits) had 2 doubles, and Michael Bahrs had a double. Colin Musto and Kyle Strassburg had 2 hits each. PITCH COUNTS: STONY POINT: Greeley, 20; Wholly, 18; Marina, 17; Pacella, 6. SUFFERN: Trevor Conklin, 67; Zack Mabry, 43. Pearl River, 4 – South Orangetown, 2: A well-played game by both teams was won by Pearl River, 4-2, on two first-inning runs (RBI's by Christopher Sabino and Conor McCabe) and single runs in the second (double by Sean Scanlon and single by Steven Perzigian) and third (double by Sean McGarvey) innings. South Orangetown mounted a last-inning 2-run rally on a clutch hit from Kieran Gibson. Jack Shannon had a hit and scored a run for SO. Pearl River starting pitcher Sabino struck out 11 batters in 5 innings, while allowing only 2 hits. SO pitchers Jack Clifford and Gibson also threw well. Nanuet, 3 – West Nyack, 0: Nanuet starter Michael Castello struck out 11 batters in 5 innings of work, while limiting West Nyack batters to 4 hits, to lead Nanuet to a 3-0 win over WN. Dan O'Sullivan scored Nanuet's first run in the third inning and drove in a run with a single in the fourth. Thomas Rafferty and Castello scored the other runs. West Nyack applied pressure in the sixth inning when singles by Camden Ailinger (2 hits in the game) and Kevin Montague (2 hits), along with a walk to Austin Kaplan, loaded the bases. At that point, Nanuet catcher made a game-saving defensive play, snatching a quick throw and applying the tag to to Ailinger, attempting to steal home. Nanuet reliever O'Sullivan then got the third out to end the game. Nanuet clinched a spot in the semi-finals with the win. PITCH COUNTS: NANUET: Castello, 75; O'Sullivan, 17. Saturday, July 25, 2009: Pearl River, 16 – Suffern, 7: A 5-run second inning, keyed by hits from Conor McCabe, Steven Perzigian and Patrick Kennedy, gave Pearl River a lead it would not relinquish. A 6-run 4th inning put the game out of reach. Sean Scanlon scored 3 times for PR, McCabe had 3 hits and Ryan Buchan had a big double in the 4th inning rally. Tyler Stevens had a double and scored 2 runs for Suffern, and Ryan Goodman had 3 hits. PITCH COUNTS: PEARL RIVER: P. Kennedy, 70; Joseph Sassano, 47. SUFFERN: Paul Pernaj, 54; Tyler Stevens, 36; R. Goodman, 50. Stony Point, 4 – Ramapo, 0: Stony Point notched its second straight shutout behind pitchers Brian Wholley (9 strikeouts in 4 innings) and Joshua Von Holt. SP plated a pair of runs in the first inning, the key hit coming off the bat of Collin Musto. Raymond Pacella doubled and scored in the third inning to extend the lead, and Kyle Strassburg completed the scoring with a run in the 4th inning. Musto and John Morina had 2 hits in the game. Sunday, July 26, 2009: South Orangetown, 5 – Ramapo, 3: South Orangetown scored 3 runs in the first inning, then played tightrope over the second half of the game to hold the Ramapo offense at bay. SO's early lead was produced by big hits from Jack Shannon, Thomas McGivney and Jonathan Weissberg. Ramapo picked up a run in the second on hits from C.J. Iametti and William Tenzer. Pitching with the slim lead, SO starter McGivney came up big in clutch situations, with the help of solid defense from his infield and outfield. Shortstop Kieran Gibson came up big in the second inning, snaring a line drive and forcing a runner at second to hold Ramapo to one run. The SO infield made all 3 outs in the third, and in the fourth inning McGivney was faced with bases-loaded and only one out, but remained calm and retired the side on a strikeout and a comebacker to the mound. In the fifth inning, Ramapo put the tying runs on second and third with one out, on a double by Justin Rabich and a single by Chris Perich. This time, McGivney had the heart of the Ramapo lineup coming up, but once again showed his poker face, inducing a popup to first and a grounder to second to escape with no damage. In the top of the 6th inning, South Orangetown appeared to put the game away with 2 "insurance" runs scored by Shannon and McGivney, but Ramapo proved that their players do not give up. They parlayed a couple of walks into 2 runs, scored by Danny Shpigler and Joe DeLuca, and had 2 other runners on base. This time, it was the turn of SO reliever Thomas Chiapperino to take a deep breath and grit his teeth. Thomas got a grounder to third, excellently played by Danny Quirk for the second out, and then finished the game with a flourish, striking out one of Ramapo's best hitters, and picking up a well-earned save. PITCH COUNTS: SOUTH ORANGETOWN: McGivney, 79; Chiapperino, 23. RAMAPO: Alex Perich, 49; Shpigler, 31. Haverstraw, 9 – Nyack-Valley-Cottage, 6: Haverstraw applied steady offensive pressure, scoring 3 runs in the first, 3 runs in the third and 2 in the fourth, to overcome a big 5-run second inning by Nyack-Valley Cottage. The big hits in Nyack-VC's big inning were a triple from Michael Pavelchak and a single from Tyler Fay. NVC's Nick Mancini scored 2 runs in the game. For Haverstraw, Blake Rockman had 3 hits, including a double, and scored 3 runs. Felix Urena had a pair of doubles and scored twice. Devon Green pitched 3 good innings in relief for Haverstraw. Tuesday, July 28, 2009: Pearl River, 15 – Nanuet, 1: Pearl River's offensive explosion was highlighted by two long homeruns, one a grand slam, off the bat of Christopher Sabino. Sabino, Sean McGarvey (3 hits) and Sean Scanlon scored four runs apiece. Michael Castell scored the lone run for Nanuet, on a double by Dan O'Sullivan. PITCH COUNTS: PEARL RIVER: Holahan, 75. NANUET: Van Schaick, 36; O'Sullivan, 67; Mackin, 20; Grycel, 36. Haverstraw, 5 - Stony Point, 3: Haverstraw pitchers Alex Henriquez and Omar Rodriguez were on top of their game in this semi-final match-up against a tough Stony Point team. Henriquez pitched into the 4th inning, allowing 2 hits and striking out five. Rodriguez took over in the fourth, and was almost flawless, allowing only two SP runners on base, both on errors. The Haverstraw offense jumped on top immediately with two quick runs in the first inning on a Jacob garrison single, Jimmy Costin double and a single by Rodriguez. Their winning rally came in the 4th inning, with 3 runs coming across the plate, with Costin's second double being the big hit. Stony Point scored one run in the second inning (Brian Wholley double) and two in the third (single and run scored by Raymond Pacella and the other run scored by Stephen Greeley). Thursday, July 30, 2009 (CHAMPIONSHIP): Pearl River, 7 – Haverstraw, 1: Pearl River’s 4-run third inning broke open a close 2-1 game, and PR went on to win the 6th Annual Billy Kayser Memorial Tournament by a 7-1 score over Haverstraw. Christopher Sabino (3 2/3 innings) and Patrick Kennedy ( 2 1/3 innings ) combined for a no-hitter (the 4th no hitter thrown by Pearl River pitchers during the All Star season). Solid defense by Craig MacDonald, Conor Holahan, Conor McCabe, Sean McGarvey helped preserve the victory. Joe Sassano, Ryan Buchan, Steven Perzigian, and Sean Scanlon (key double in the 3rd inning) led the offensive attack. Haverstraw’s Joel Duran and Blake Rockman pitched well, despite the score. Rockman scored Haverstraw’s only run in the second inning. The Haverstraw defense pulled off a double play in the fourth inning. After the game, both teams received trophies and took pictures with the Kayser family. The Kaysers once again thank everyone who played in and attended the tournament. Pearl River wins Kayser tournament
Christopher Sabino and Patrick Kennedy combined on a no-hitter as host Pearl River downed Haverstraw 7-1 to win the sixth annual Billy Kayser Memorial Baseball (9-and-under) Tournament on July 30. Craig MacDonald, Conor Holahan, Conor McCabe, Sean McGarvey played solid defense in the win. Joe Sassano, Ryan Buchan, Steven Perzigian, and Sean Scanlon led the offense. Haverstraw's Joel Duran and Blake Rockman pitched well. Rockman scored Haverstraw's run in the second inning. Sabino hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in Pearl River's 15-1 semifinal win over Nanuet. McCarvey had three hits as he and Scanlon scored four runs apiece. Pearl River opened the tournament with a 12-0 loss to Ramapo before bouncing back to defeat defending champion Stony Point 3-2. Hits by Buchan, Sabino and McCabe keyed a three-run fifth inning. Kevin Doorley earned the win with relief help from Kennedy, who picked up the save. Joshua Von Holt pitched a strong game for Stony Point. Raymond Pacella had three hits. Pearl River put together a five-run second inning and a six-run fourth inning in downing Suffern 16-7. Scanlon scored three runs, McCabe had three hits and Buchan had a key double. Suffern's Tyler Stevens had a double and scored twice. Ryan Goodman had 3 hits. Haverstraw downed Stony Point 5-3 in the semifinals behind the pitching of Alex Henriquez, who picked up the win, and Omar Rodriguez, who earned the save. Henriquez pitched into the fourth inning, allowing two hits while striking out five. Rodriguez was nearly flawless, allowing just two base runners. Rodriguez had a two-run hit in the first inning to drive in Jacob Garrison and Jimmy Costin, both of whom singled to start the inning. Haverstraw rallied for three runs in the fourth on a bases-clearing double by Costin, who went 3 for 3. Bret Kaye's single started the rally. Stony Point scored a run in the second when Brian Wholley doubled and scored on a passed ball. Stony Point added two in the third when Pacella singled and scored on a hit by Stephen Greeley, who later scored on a ball hit by Von Holt. Haverstraw improved to 4-0 and earned the top seed in its pool with a 9-6 win over Nyack/Valley Cottage. Devin Green pitched three strong inning to pick of the win in relief of Gabriel Canjura. Henriquez pitched the sixth inning for the save. Rockman had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs to lead Haverstraw. Felix Urena added a pair of doubles and scored twice. Nyack/Valley Cottage got a key triple from Michael Pavelchak and a clutch single from Tyler Fay during a five-run second inning. Nick Mancini scored two runs.
