Coaches John Loeffler and Merrill Meyers organized a Pearl River team to compete at the "Big League" (18U) level in 2009, and the team then faced stiff competition from teams like West Nyack, Stony Point, New City, etc. The PR Yankees won some tough games to become the first PRLL big-league team to win a District 18 championship. The Pearl River Yankees competed recently in the District 18
Big league division starting May 24th ending their season on August
3rd.
The team went 12-3-1 to complete the Summer league season by
winning the District 18 championship. They finished second in the
regular season and began a double elimination playoff format starting
on 7/28. They beat New city in the opening round of the playoff's by a
score of 5-3 at Veterans Park in Orangeburg. Rob Diercks pitched for
Pearl River striking out seven in 5 innings for the win. Bobby holmsen
struck out 5 in relief.
In the second round of the winners bracket, Eddie Vecchio struck
out 13 while pitching a complete game shut out as the Pearl River
Yankees defeated West Nyack by a score of 6-0.
In the first game of the finals on Friday 8/1 at Stony Point
Veterans field, the Yankees lost a close game to Stony point by a
score of 1-0. Pitcher Kevin Loeffler struck out 5. The Yankees bats
went cold getting just 2 hits in the loss.
In a winner take all game on Sunday 8/3 at Veterans Park in
Orangeburg, with the Yankees down 1-0 after 5 innings, Mike Iacobellis
and Nick Mart scored in the bottom of the sixth for the Yankees to
take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh with 1 out and a runner on 3rd, Mike
Weiner caught a pop out in right field for the second out and threw
home to catcher Josh Mendelson as a runner was tagging from 3rd base
for the final out at the plate to seal the championship win. Eddie
Vecchio again pitched a complete game for the Pearl River Yankees
striking out 6 for the win.
