7/30/08: The PRLL 10 year-old softball team added the Section 2 championship to their District 18 title tonight, defeating a talented team from Ulster, 11-5. Ulster grabbed an early first-inning lead when Jessica Mertz drove in a run, but Pearl River struck for 3 runs in the second inning, with Jules Madigan's big RBI double the key hit. After Ulster had taken back the lead with a bases-loaded triple by Claudia Hammel, PR posted four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Katherine Gilbride's triple, and never looked back. Four more runs in the sixth inning sealed the win for Pearl River, with (winning pitcher) Erica Collura, Gilbride and Alexa Candelario stroking the key hits. After Ulster got a runner on base in their sixth inning, Mertz mashed a hit into right field, but Pearl River right-fielder Sarah Henry cancelled any thought of a late rally by charging the ball and throwing Mertz out at first base with a laser throw. Gilbride's two hits paced PR, and Candelario and Lindsey Stephen scored two runs each. Collura limited Ulster to four hits in the game. Pearl River will play in the 4-team NY State Tournament beginning on Saturday, August 2 in Brewster.
