BOYS 11's WIN WEST NYACK TOURNAMENT

The PRLL 11 year-old Boys' team had a successful 2006 all-star season. They had a good run in the District 18 tournament, finally bowing in the semi-final heartbreaker to Suffern, 3-2. Then, in the West Nyack Tournament, the team got a rematch with Suffern, again in the semi-final, and won, 5-2, and then went on to win the tournament.  Details below.

     The 11 year-old Boys
began their District 18 tournament on Saturday, July 15 with a 6-2 victory at Haverstraw.
7/15/06:   Pearl River 6  Haverstraw 2  (11's)
Pearl River pitcher Brendan Ryan allowed 4 hits over 5 innings and Kevin Duffy closed out the 6th inning in a come from behind victory at Haverstraw.   The 11's trailed 1-0 going into the top of the fourth when they exploded for 4 runs.  Matt McMorrow doubled to start the inning (2 for 4), Peter Digiovanni laid down a perfect bunt for a hit and Ryan knotted the score, helping his own cause with a single to left.  Connor Madigan (2 for 4) then drove a long triple to the gap to give the team a 3-1 lead.  Mike Henry followed with a double to drive in the fourth run.  Solid defense up the middle led by Richie Masley (CF), Madigan (SS), Henry (2B) and Shane Ocasal (C - threw out key runner stealing and a runner bunting) kept Haverstraw from developing any big innings.  In the sixth inning Pearl River added two insurance runs on back-to-back hits by Mike Mckee and Duffy.
7/18/06, Anderson Field:  Pearl River, 4 - West Nyack, 3:
Connor Madigan (2 for 4) smoked a base hit into rightfield to breakup a 3-3 tie with 2 outs and the bases loaded as Patrick Burke crossed the plate to carry Pearl River over West Nyack.  Kevin Duffy started the inning with a hard line drive up the middle to get the boys rolling.  Tyler Diercks pitched 6 terrific innings versus a tough West Nyack team scattering 7 hits in the winning effort.  The defense once again played flawlessly to support their pitcher.  Several great plays by the West Nyack defense had held Pearl River at bay before Madigan's heroics. A great game.  The team plays at Stony Point on Friday, July 21.
7/21/06:   Stony Point 5 - Pearl River 3
Pearl River fought hard to the very end in this seesaw battle between two very good teams; as the Stony Point 3rd baseman made a great stab over the 3rd base bag to rob Jake Tedesco of an extra base hit with the tying runs on base with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th.  Brendan Ryan went the distance on the mound holding Stony Point to 6 hits.  Michael McKee  (2 for 3) delivered an RBI double in the 2nd to give PR a 1-0 lead.  Brendan Duffy answered a Stony Point 2 run double in the top of the third with a line drive 2 run single to centerfield to give PR a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 3rd.  Stony Point added 3 runs in the 5th to cap the scoring and then made several outstanding defensive plays in the 5th and 6th to preserve the victory.

7/23/06:  Suffern 3 - Pearl River 2
In a battle of hard throwing righthanders between Pearl River's Kevin Duffy and Suffern's AJ Fishberg; Suffern held on to win 3-2 and eliminate the Pearl River 11's in the semi-final of the NYS District 18 tournament.  AJ Fishberg launched a 3 run homer in the 1st inning and then struck out 15 batters on 145 pitches in the game.  Pearl River had the tying and winning runs on 2nd and 3rd in the 6th inning when Suffern recorded the final out.  Jake Tedesco belted PR's only hit; a double in the 4th inning with one on, however the boys could not capitalize.  Pearl River once again played outstanding defense, the trademark of this squad, which included fantastic contributions from Matt McMorrow, Mike Henry and Shane Ocasal.  Kevin Duffy battled hard after the tough first inning and got stronger as the game continued allowing the boys to have a shot at a come from behind win.  The 11's next game is in the West Nyack Tournament which begins later this week.  More exciting games to come.  This is a very good team and can play with any other team in NY State.

CHAMPIONSHIP - AUG. 8, 2006:   The Pearl River 11 year old Allstars captured the West Nyack Tournament with a 5-3 victory over a tough and very good South Orangetown team.  Jake Tedesco stepped up to the challenge and led the boys both on the mound and at the plate.  Jake pitched 4 2/3 innings striking out 6 batters while also reaching base safely three times (2 for 2, walk) and included a long triple over the head of the SO rightfielder.  Brendan Ryan relieved Tedesco in the 5th with men on 2nd and 3rd with one out and promptly forced the first hitter he faced  to pop up to Shortstop Connor Madigan for the second out who then alertly fired to third to force out the runner for the final out of the inning.  After Pearl River picked up some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth the boys took the field in the top of the sixth with a 5-2 lead.  South Orangetown quickly loaded the bases with no out and Pearl River countered with a call to the bullpen.  Kevin Duffy stepped onto the mound and retired the last three hitters including a strikeout to end the championship game. Once again the boys played brilliant defense as they have all summer.  The up the middle play of Catcher Shane Ocasal (key pickoff of SO runner) , Shortstop Madigan (several terrific plays including charging hard on a do or die play in the 4th), Second Baseman Michael Henry (outstanding grab of a hard line drive in the 6th) and Centerfielder Richie Masely (tracked down a long fly in the 5th) was terrific; Duffy and Tedesco also made outstanding plays at third and on the mound, respectively.  Masely had a key hit in the PR three run second inning and Tyler Diercks, Matt McMorrow and Michael McKee aggressively ran the bases and scored runs in tight situations.
These boys worked extremely hard and accomplished a lot this summer.  Not only did they win the very competitive WN Tournament, they finished 3rd in the NYS District 18 Tournament.  They played very well in every game, in fact in both their only two losses of the summer against the two District 18 finalists they had the winning runs on base in the 6th inning.  Most importantly every player had their moment in the sun where they contributed to a victory.....a true team.  The players on the Pearl River 11's are Patrick Burke, Tyler Diercks, Peter DiGiovanni, Kevin Duffy, Michael Henry, Connor Madigan, Richie Masley, Michael McKee, Connor McIntyre, Matt McMorrow, Shane Ocasal, Brendan Ryan and Jake Tedesco.

8/7
Pearl River 5  Suffern 2
