| Special Supplement: Manager's Notes on State Tournament Game 1: PR 13-East Meadow 3 PR’s first opponent was East Meadow whose last year team had won the 2004 11-year-old State Championship. The PRLL All Stars opened the game with 6 runs in the first inning with the first 5 batters in the line up all scoring. East Meadow started to rally in the second to make it a 6-2 game but PR responded by adding 2 more runs in their half of the second to extend the lead to 8-2. It was 9-3 going into the bottom of the 5th when PR put the game away on an Emily Harmon base hit to make it a 10 run game 13-3. The offense was led by Victoria Pucci’s 2 hits and 4 runs scored, Colleen Clarke’s double and single, Kerry Sullivan’s RBI triple and 3 runs scored while winning pitcher Katie O’Flynn threw a 1-hitter while striking out 10 batters. The defense was led by Nicole Leote, Taylor McGee, Shannon McKiernan and Liz Prigge while the base running of Gemma Mahoney, Kristyn Neroda and Christ Scognamiglio set the offense in motion! Game 2: PR 19-Harrison 4 Harrison was coming off a 5-0 win over Geddes and came into the game with momentum. As visitors in the contest, PR scored 7 runs in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the game. The girls came out hitting and at one point had 6 consecutive hits and 8 in total for the 1st inning. Harrison scored a run in the first off of winning pitcher Kristyn Neroda but it was not enough to get them back into the game as PR added 5 more runs in the second, 3 in the 3rd and 4 in the 4th to roll to a 19-4 victory. The offense was led by 4 hits from Katie O’Flynn and Victoria Pucci, 2 hits from Emily Harmon and Christa Scognamiglio, 4 RBIs from Gemma Mahoney, 3 RBIs from Colleen Clarke and Kristyn Neroda. Nicole Leote scored 3 runs while a Key rally was started by Liz Prigge, Shannon McKiernan and Taylor McGee to put the game away. The Victory provides an opportunity to face East Meadow in the Championship series as they defeated Harrison in a 3-1 game. Title Game: PR 9- East Meadow 0 Katie O’Flynn threw a no hitter and struck out 7 in the Championship game. Kristyn Neroda and Gemma Mahoney opened up the first inning with base hits and were driven in by Katie O’Flynn who later scored on a Victoria Pucci single to make it a 3-0 lead after one inning. PR added a run in the second on a RBI triple by Kerry Sullivan for a 4-0 game after 3 innings. The team provided outstanding fielding support from Shannon McKiernan (center field), Emily Harmon (right field) and Kristyn Neroda (second base) who all caught line drives for outs and Gemma Mahoney (shortstop) and Kerry Sullivan (first base). The defensive play of the game came from Colleen Clarke (third base) who fielded a ricochet hit off of Katie O’Flynn leg on the mound and fired to first base to get the batter by a step and preserved the no hitter. The key rally to put the game away was created byLiz Prigge and Christa Scognamiglio. After the last out, a strikeout, the team began their celebration that included a team huddle, a team dance which the home plate umpire joined in, presentation of individual and team first place trophies as well as the New York State Championship banner! While the team took the customary victory lap around the outfield, the PR Junior Girls were in the middle of their Eastern Regional game against New Jersey in a field adjacent to where the 11 year olds were playing. The left field fence of the 11 year olds field lined up to their right field fence of the field where the Juinor Girls were playing. As the 11 year olds paraded from right to left field, the PR Junior Girls stopped their game (they were in the field on defense) and the PR Junior Girls, as well as their fans, applauded the 11 year old girls and their accomplishment as they made their way to left field and then back to home plate. A show of solidarity by the Junior Girls and a moment that will be remembered. A thanks goes to all of the parents as your support was greatly appreciated! Congratulations all of the girls as all of your hard work enable you to win a State Championship that you will always remember! NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONS! GREAT JOB! |
