FAQs and Myths about travel soccer
FAQs and Myths about travel soccer
PMSC travel teams typically play in the LANCO league. Some older teams might choose to play elsewhere. Other teams in the LANCO league include Hempfield, Manheim Twp, Ephrata, Cocalico, Solanco, and Octorara. A few teams are entered from York and Lebanon. Travel teams will attend tournaments, typically in Dillsburg or Hershey. Older teams might travel outside central PA. Philadelphia, DC and New Jersey ARE NOT areas that PMSC teams travel to regularly to play games or tournaments. Home games are held at either a school field or township field within Penn Manor School District.
Each team practices twice per week. The practices are usually 1 ½ hours in length, and are held at either a school field or township field within Penn Manor School District.
All PMSC coaches are volunteers. Typically, the coach has a son/daughter on the team. The travel committee selects the coaches annually. Anyone can apply to coach as per the bylaws and guidelines of the PMSC. Additional info is available at www.PennManorSoccerClub.com.
PMSC travel committee attempts to keep the same uniform for at least 2 years. Uniform cost is approximately $65.00. Addition costs include soccer shoes and shin guards, as both are required equipment. Team camp is mandatory for ages U10, U11 and U12. All other age groups are encouraged to attend the camp.
The estimated fees per player per year on a PMSC travel team are:
Tryout Fees: $20
Subtotal $20 due at tryouts
Team Camp $100 (team fundraising is available-see team rep or committee member)
Fall registration $50
Subtotal $170 due upon accepting position on team
Fall tournament $50
Spring Registration $50
Subtotal $100 due before the end of the fall season
Spring Tournament $50
Subtotal $50 due before the end of spring season
*Estimated yearly total $320
*Financial assistance and fundraising is available. Please contact a member of the travel committee for additional information.
The Travel Team camp will be for one week in the evening in August.
The PMSC offers the opportunity to play soccer to all residents of the Penn Manor School District. Whether it is intramural or travel soccer, if the costs of playing on a team are a hardship for your family or a family that you know, please contact the club director. PMSC has made provisions for anyone in this situation. All inquiries are CONFIDENTIAL!!!

2008-2009 Travel Team Guidelines
IV. Travel Program Guidelines
TRAVEL GUIDELINES:
I. Club Philosophy
It is the philosophy of the travel program to teach and build upon fundamental skills and to further develop technical and tactical skills. Games are played with an emphasis on the effort to win and good sportsmanship.
II. Risk Management
In the interest of protecting the rights and safety of all players, parents, coaches, or other volunteers it is mandated that there be at least two adults per team present at each practice. This can be two coaches or one coach and one parent who agrees to attend the entire practice. Any player suffering an injury that results in an open bleeding wound will not be aloud to continue play until the blood is controlled (LANCO rule).
III. The Season
There are two seasons, fall and spring. The fall season may begin prior to Labor Day. The season consists of approximately eight games. Games are usually played on Saturdays and Sundays, although a make-up game can be scheduled any time suitable for both coaches. Games are played either at a home venue or an away venue. The spring season usually begins on the first Sunday in April except when Easter falls on the first Sunday, in which case the season would begin the following Sunday. The spring season also consists of approximately eight games.
IV. Teams
Each team will strive for a roster size of a minimum of 15 to a maximum of 17 players. The top 11 evaluated make the team and the head coach much choose the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th player. The coach will have the option for the 16th and 17th player. U10 teams will strive for a roster of 11 to 13. The top 8 evaluated make the team and the coach must chose the 9th, 10th, and 11th player. The coach will have the option for the 12th and 13th player. Final approval of all rosters is dependent on travel committee approval.
In special situations the roster size can be changed i.e. only eight girls try out for U/17 team and only ten girls try out for the U/19 team. Rather than having no U/17 and no U/19 team, form one team with a roster of eighteen (maximum roster size per LANCO rules) to allow the eighteenth girl to play and call it a U/19 team. In these special situations the decision will be made by the Board. .
V. Practices
Travel teams can practice a maximum of two times per week for a maximum of two hours per practice. Practice will begin no earlier than the beginning dates specified on the field contracts and end no later than the dates specified on the field contracts. Travel is not permitted to start before August 1st.
II The Game
Per LANCO league rules, no changes in playing dates, field locations, or game times will be permitted. If a conflict arises, the requesting team must present a recommendation in writing to LANCO at least three weeks before the game in question and the opposing team must agree. LANCO will then review and notify the reps.
VII. Equipment
Each player must purchase her own uniform The uniform consists of a jersey, shorts, socks, shin guards and cleats. The approximate cost of uniforms has ranged from $50 to $70. All PMSC Travel Teams wear the same uniform. The player can use the same uniform from year to year and replace only components as wear and tear or growth dictates. Every even numbered year, the committee will solicit the opinion of parents and possibly choose a different uniform if the majority rule so.
Shin guards are mandatory but not provided. Bracelets, earrings, or necklaces of any kind may not be worn during a game or practice. No metal or hard objects may be worn in the hair.
VIII. Rain Outs
All games are to played as scheduled. If inclement weather requires the league to cancel all games, each club rep will be called. If there is no message on LANCO phone lines or a call to rep is not made by 11:00 a.m. all games are on. If no call, the games will be played. The referee may call a field unplayable thereby necessitating a postponement.
IX. Penalties
The referee on the field will be responsible for the code of conduct using the Laws of the Game of the FIFA guidelines.
X. Time Keeping
A constant clock will be kept on the field by the referee. Time added for injuries or other lost time is at the discretion of the referee.
Parent Involvement
Sign and return code of conduct forms.
Participate in program i.e. coach, assistant coach, program member,
standing committee member, or board member
Players must arrive prior to the game time per coach's requirements.
Provide oranges for half time or snack and drink for end of game. (Coaches option)
Cooperate in team phone chains.
Notify coach promptly in the event a player cannot attend a game or practice.
Police the game area after each game to keep the area free from litter.
XII. Criteria for Choosing Coaches
Interested parents can request positions by checking the registration form. Head coaches are selected by the Travel Committee. All candidates must fill out an application. The Travel Committee will take input into the decision making process. Coaching candidates may be interviewed by committee member(s). This may be done in person or by phone. Coaching history and will be taken into consideration
Coaches are permitted to be head coach or assistant coach of only one team at a time in the PMSC program. Exceptions are subject to Board approval. An "E" coaching license is highly recommended.
All coaches serve on a volunteer basis. Each coach is appointed on a year to year basis. Coaches must be high school graduates or the equivalent thereof. All coaches must complete the Youth Soccer Association Disclosure form and a Coaches Code of Conduct form.
XIII. Tournament Play
All travel coaches must fulfill league obligations, i.e. play in all their regular scheduled league games. Once that is achieved the team may play in as many tournaments as the coach decides. The tournament decision(s) are ultimately up to the coach but the program encourages parental input and involvement in the process. If one or more players are not able to participate in a tournament the coach may add guest players to come up with a full roster (17). Guest players must be carded players within the program, unless approved by the Travel Board.
XIV. Try Outs
Tryouts for the Travel Teams will be held in May of each year. Age groups will be determined by EPYSA, age and grade, guidelines. Players may not tryout for a team in which they do not meet these guidelines. U-11 through U-19 players are trying out for 14 positions and 28 if there are two teams. U-10 players are trying out for 11 positions, 22 for two teams. Playing up will only be allowed at the U-10 developmental level, 3rd graders are welcome to tryout for the developmental teams, if they make the team they can can play up for that year only, the next year they will be required to play with their age per EPYSA guidelines or grade. No playing up is allowed on U-11 teams and up with the following exception: Players whose birthdate is after August 1st that would put them in the EPYSA age group with a grade below them may try out and play in either age group. Playing down with your grade is not an option per EPYSA guidelines. (example: a 7th grader with an 8/02/1991 birthday would be eligable to try out for BOTH U-13(Other 7th graders - EPYSA AGE GUIDELINE 8/1/1990-7/31/1991) and U-12(6th graders- EPYSA AGE GUIDELINE 8/1/1991-7/31/1992) in the correct EPYSA age bracket).
There will be an additional one time per year non-refundable tryout fee charged at the time of the tryouts. This fee will be applied by the club to pay qualified evaluators and to cover the cost of tryout shirts which will be given to the players at tryouts.
Goalkeeper
Players trying out for goalkeeper must understand that they are committing to playing the position as determined by the coach. This could mean that this is the only position that she will play. The prospective goalkeeper and one of her parents must sign a goalkeepers agreement showing their understanding and agreement to the above mentioned conditions.
XV. Finances
Players are asked to pay a start-up fee prior to the fall and spring seasons as determined by the travel budget. In addition to uniforms, expenses include such things as EPYSA travel affiliation, administration, and insurance fees and LANCO travel, league, and referee fees. All fees must be paid in full for the player to participate. In cases of financial hardship the Director can make special arrangements for payment.
XVI. Parent/Player Agreement
Every player and one of her parents must sign an agreement, which states that they will abide by the program guidelines.
XVII. Playing Time
All U-11 through U-19 players will be guaranteed a minimum of one quarter playing time in each game. For a twenty minute game this is five minutes, for an hour game this would be fifteen minutes. A coach can deviate from this guideline only in the case of disciplinary action and only after discussing this with the parent and getting either the Travel Chair or Travel Secretary approval. Playing time guidelines apply to tournament and league games.
All U-10 players will play a minimum of ½ of the game. They will play both offense and defense with the mid-field position as either offense or defense. For tournament and play off games U-10 may follow U-11 through U-19 playing guidelines. It will be at the coaches discretion to place players in one or more positions.
XVIII. Disciplinary Guidelines
Dismissal from a team or from coaching will follow the guidelines as set forth in the PMSC, Inc. By-Laws. The coach/parent /player (offender) committing a first offense will receive a warning from the Program Chair. For a second offense, a written warning will be issued to the offender by the Program Chair. Committing a third offense will result in the matter being turned over to the Board for appropriate action, which could include dismissal from the soccer club. For each offense, the matter will be discussed with the coach/parent/player before a warning is issued.
DISMISSAL: Reasons for dismissal include but are not limited to:
