Monday, August 10 New Head Coach Announced I would like to announce that we have a new head coach! He is Don Mitchell. We also have 2 new assistant coaches, Ricky Kaetzel and Wick Terrell. We still have 2 more assistant coaching positions to fill. We will fill them in consultation with the new coaching staff. Here's some info about the new coaching staff: Brief Bio. for Head Coach Don Mitchell: I played at East Meadow HS on Long Island. When I was there, we won the "State" championship four times over a six year time frame. We were the first team from Long Island to travel and play any Maryland high schools. We defeated the top two teams in Baltimore, St Paul’s (12-8) and Boys Latin (8-7), giving us one of the top national rankings in high schools. Our coach was Jack Kaley, who is now the head coach at National Champion Div II NYIT. Many lacrosse people came from those teams but most notable is Duke coach, John Denowski. He was a sophomore when I was a senior, we were on the same attack. I played college football and lacrosse. First, at Nassau Community College; we won two national championships, went 19-1 and 20-0. Some of the best players in the game played on those teams, including some of the top high school coaches. I then played at SUNY Cortland, where we won the national championship. Those teams are renowned for the coaches that came from them, including Bill Tierney who just moved from Princeton to Denver. I coached or officiated lacrosse ever since. I coached Hauppauge HS to the Long Island Championships, and raised their overall ranking to the top 7% in the country. For almost 9 years I assisted in coaching the Long Island team to the NYS Empire Games. This was a team that was narrowed down from the best 600 players from 90 high schools to the top 22 players. These guys were literally the best of the best, and are some of the nation’s best college players. In cooperation with three other guys, I started the Suffolk Youth Lacrosse Program. I was the first president, a role I held for 15 years. During that time, we grew from 120 boys to over 7,000 boys. My eldest son is a head coach in Virginia.
