Wednesday, May 30 Basketball Spotlight MDC 12U Top Performers Basketball Spotlight MDC 12U Top Performers Part 2 (By "Squirrel The World")
Zegary Scott (Playtime Panthers)
The Basketball Spotlight 12U Division was loaded with top ball players and squad. Here’s our first report of the top performers provided by our new evaluator “Squirrel The World”.
MDC 12U Top Performers Part 2
Zegary Scott Guard (Playtime)- Very polished floor general creates for teammates and makes the game easy for his coach. Always vocal on the floor he exhibits a maturity that a coach will find refreshing. Has a “team first” mentality that will foster a winning environment for whatever program he plays for.
Jack Rooney Guard (Playtime)- The Jack OF Spades is no
joker. Leave him open and the joke will be on you. This kid reminds me of a
young Rex Chapman with his quick release and ball handling to complement.
Excellent floor spacer with the understanding of how to move without the
ball.
Jalen Lecque Guard (Playtime)- With a hesitation
dribble that resembles Deronn Williams, Jalen freezes his opponents and blows by
them b4 they get into their defensive stance. Don’t think for one minute that
this kid is all ball handle because he exhibits a nice jump shot that will
consistently force the defense to play him honest.

Playtime Will Be Ready To Rock!
The Basketball Spotlight MDC 11U Division has been a pleasant surprise this year. #1 ECE-NJABC will not be in the building so we are looking to see who will be ready to step up. Here’s a look at the squads that will be in Lakewood.
Basketball Spotlight MDC 11U
Preview
Playtime: PP has a few state crowns under their belt now they will be looking to win their second Spotlight banner. They have a thick field but they are definitely battle tested. Team Nelson: TN is hungry for a crown after pushing #1 ECE-NJABC to double overtime during the Mid Atlantic finals. They have enough weapons to make it to Hoop Group Headquarters on Sunday. Potomac Valley Select: I hear this is a super squad coming up from the Potomac Valley. Now they will be trying to represent to the fullest. It will be interesting to see how they mesh in this atmosphere. CJ Hawks: The Hawks have been hovering around the championship round all season. Now might be the time for them to make the break through. Beyond The Lines: This Lakewood based crew will have the home court advantage and will need it as they make their Spotlight debut. Welcome to the big stage I hope you are ready to rumble. Other Teams To Watch: NY Panthers, Pleasantville PAL, M Plex Mustangs, KSK and others. The Record
A few years ago, a group of fathers in Teaneck and Hackensack decided they needed to do something to help students prepare for high school — and the rest of their lives. "The kids needed us," said Mike Richardson. They formed a basketball team, but there was a catch: To play, a boy had to have a C-plus or better average. Those who didn't had to come to practice 30 minutes early for tutoring. The boys didn't seem to mind the extra work as long as they got to play ball. In fact, the kids from all over Bergen and Passaic joined. Today, they are doing well in school. They are also doing great on the court. The Playtime Panthers are state champions — again. The 9U team won their state AAU championships in late April, earning a spot in the nationals this summer. On Sunday, the 11U team won its own state title. "It was a great game," said one of the players, Shai Williams, an 11-year-old Teaneck resident. The team will also compete against the nation's top teams this summer. "It was a well-fought game," Richardson said of the 53-38 win over the Central Jersey Hawks on Sunday. He coaches both the 9U and 11U teams. Now comes the hard work. "We have to prepare ourselves for the games ahead," said Richardson, a Teaneck resident who has a son on the 9U team. "We have to represent." * DESTRESS: Stress causes the brain intake systems to send information into the Reactive brain (automatic-fight, flight, freeze) and prevents information flow through to the Reflective higher thinking, conscious brain (prefrontal cortex) where long-term memory is constructed. Establish enjoyable rituals (favorite songs, card games, ball toss) or surprises (a fun picture downloaded and printed from the internet) before study time to destress the study experience and open up the brain networks that lead to memory storage.
* GRAB ATTENTION: Memorable events make long-term memories. Find out what your child will study next in school and hang posters "advertising" or giving hints about that topic and encourage him to guess what it might be. Curiosity open's up the brain's sensory intake filter so when the topic comes up in class or in reading it will grab her attention.
* COLOR: The brain only lets in a small part of the billions of bits of sensory information available every second. A filter in the low (unconscious, automatic, animal-like) brain decides what gets in. Color is something that gets through this filter especially well. Have your children use colored pens color code notes or words to emphasize high importance. You can have a picture of a traffic light on the wall and he can use green, orange, and red in order of importance - like the traffic light.
* NOVELTY: If you add novelty to a study experience it will be more memorable. Use video clips from the internet, put on a funny hat, put a scarf on the dog, light a candle) right before your child begins to study. His alerting system will be more open to processing and remember information that comes in after a novel experience.
* PERSONAL MEANING: Children must care enough about information or consider it personally important, for it to go through the brain filters and be stored as memory. Use your child's interests to connect her to the material. Make stories together using the information. Stories are great ways to remember new things because you child's brain grew up hearing stories and the pattern for remembering stories is strong in her brain.
* RELATIONAL MEMORIES: The brain keeps information in short-term memory for less than a minute unless it connects with prior knowledge. Activate your child's prior knowledge by reminding him of things you've done as a family or that he's learned in other subjects that relates to the new information.
* PATTERNING: The brain is a pattern-seeking organ. When your children recognize relationships between new and prior knowledge their brains can link the new information with a category of existing knowledge for long-term storage. Charts, mnemonics, listing similarities/differences, and making analogies build long-term memory patterns.
* MENTAL MANIPULATION FOR LONG-TERM MEMORY: Once the information gets to the higher thinking brain your child must do something with it to build permanent memories. Your children can write summaries of new information in their own words. To make these even more personally meaningful the summaries can be in forms that suit their learning style preferences including sketches, skits, songs, dances, comic strips, or drawings.
* PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT: Information from each of the senses is stored in a part of the brain specific to that sense. Review material using multiple sensory activities so different neural networks store the knowledge in multiple brain regions. Your children's brains will build multiple pathways leading to the stored memory, which makes retrieval more efficient. When a memory has been recalled often, this repeated neural circuit activation makes the memory stronger - like exercising a muscle.
* SYN-NAPS: Neurotransmitters, brain transport proteins, needed for memory construction and attention are depleted after as little as ten minutes of doing the same activity. Syn-naps are brain-breaks where you help your child change the learning activity to let her brain chemicals replenish. The Syn-naps can be stretching, singing, or acting out vocabulary words. After just a few minutes, her refreshed brain will be ready for new memory storage.

Admissions are competitively based on the applicant's school record, recommendations, and—to a lesser—degree performance on standardized tests. PLAYTIME 11U participates in the F.A.C.E.S 3rd Annual "SHOW ME Invitational"
PLAYTIME 11U
Bobocaur Kamissoko Guard (Playtime)- After a quiet first half, Kamissoko showed why he's one of the best scorers in the region. He attacked from the baseline and exploded to the basket for points. The stage was set and he stepped up.
Terrell Bonner Guard (Playtime)- This kid is the heart and soul of the squad. He's a fierce competitor and is capable of making a few buckets. Sometimes he gets a little emotional but that's expected at this age level.
Mike Watkins Guard (Playtime)- The southpaw has good poise when handling the rock and will pull the trigger off the dribble. He made a couple of big shots during this tug a war battle. This kid doesn't lack confidence.
Drew Tyre Guard (Playtime)- Tyre sparked the Playtime comeback by pushing the rock down the throat of the F.A.C.E.S. defense. He dribbled through the double team and hit teammates with passes. His low dribbling style makes it difficult for anyone to steal the rock.
PLAYTIME 12U participates in the F.A.C.E.S 3rd Annual "SHOW ME Invitational"
PLAYTIME 12U
MJ Richardson Guard (Playtime)- Richardson found his stroke against NJ Got Game. He knocked down 4 treys which stretched the defense. He also loves to use the crossover to get into the lane.
Ty Johnson Guard (Playtime)- Johnson can shoot the rock from very deep. He sets up on the wing while launching shots as soon as he touches the rock. He hit some big shots in their win against the Brooklyn Kings.
Taj Benning Guard (Playtime)- Benning is another guard with a slick handle. His focus is getting into the lane and using the floater to score. Benning is also capable of draining the open shot

Best of the Best BasketBull hosted their 2nd annual Best of the Best tournament, which drew some of the best youth teams, age 10-14u, to the birthplace of basketball. Here is a brief recap, with more information coming shortly.
14u - Team Scan (NY) knocked off the Boston Spartans in the championship game, which was a rematch of their pool play meeting. The affair was close for a majority of the game, but Scan was too much and pulled away in the 2nd half. Scan ran through New England's best on the way, taking out BABC in the quarterfinals and CBC in the semi-finals. The NE Playaz were left as the other semi-final team as the Spartans ran through a short-handed Playaz squad.
13u - The four semi-final teams all could have made a case for 13u champion. Team MVP (NJ) lost to BABC in the semi-final, but not without putting up a furious rally. Meanwhile, CBC and Mass Jags Elite went toe to toe all game long, before CBC pulled away at the end by 6. CBC then went on to meet BABC in the final, but didn't have enough firepower, losing 53-41.
12u - The 12u division saw a dominating team run through the entire division - F.A.C.E.S. (NJ). The closest anyone would get was about 20 points, and that was crosstown rival, Playtime of NJ. The Bay St. Magic 12u put up a good fight in the semi-final as well, before losing by 22.
11u - The Connecticut Basketball was just as dominate in the 11u division beating out World Elite in the semi-final bracket and then DC Assault in the championship.
10u - Long Island Lightning - Dingle was a tough scrappy club, but they just didn't have enough for Playtime (NJ) who was led by Jalen Brooks with 26 points and finished off the Lightning 58-48.
Check back later in the day for more detailed reports of the Memorial Day action

PLAYTIME 'aka' "The GREEN Team" performs well at the Maryland Invitational this past weekend. There were well over 200 teams competing at different grade levels at the Maryland Invitational this year.
The 10U team played extremely well and advanced to the Semi Final round before being ousted by the heavily favored Atlanta Select, Georgia's 10U State Champs. The GREEN Team fought hard during regulation by getting a big 3-pointer from Tylynn Johnson down the stretch and a last second field goal by Kyle Lawrence to send the game into overtime. Atlanta Select started the overtime with a big 3 pointer and never looked back and extended the lead to 8 points.
The 9U team played well and came together as a team. The played against Norfolk Wildacts, 'Slam N Jam' and the heavily favored Delaware Panthers. The guards played extremely well and helped keep the fast tempo in all 3 games.

Sadat Kinley has taken the roll as the trainer for PLAYTIME Basketball. In his roll he will be working, primarily, with our low post players. Sadat brings much to the table. He is just 17 years of age and he has 6 years of AAU experience with NYC Gauchos. He started his basketball career with Teaneck Youth basketball and he has played on the traveling ALLSTAR team since the 4th grade. He has played 1 year Varsity and JV basketball at Paterson Catholic High School, one of New Jersey's power house teams, and as a freshman he played at Paramus Catholic High School. Since then, Sadat has taken a step away from playing basketball and is concentrating of his academics. He returned to Paramus Catholic HS and is now an honor roll student. He has been very instrumental in the growth of our low post players and he has truly helped our program by giving the younger players someone to look up to and identify with.
