Poca Boys Baseball
Dots shut out state Champions 5 - 0

    Playing on a sunny afternoon at Poca April 7,2004 . The Dots came up with 4 runs in the 4th inning , breaking open a scoreless game , the Dots added an insurence run in the 5th inning ,and went on to upset the defending class A state Champion Matewan Tigers 5 - 0 .
    In the big 3rd inning Gabe Cyrus knowed in 2 runs with a triple , after Adam Knight walked and Justin Rueckert singled knowing in a run and Gabe Cyrus stole home for the 4th run .In the 5th inning the last run was scored when Justin Rueckert got on off an Error and Gabe Cyrus got on off a single , then Jarrett Smith sacrificed them to 2nd and 3rd , then the tigers pitcher balked Justin in for the 5th run and Gabe went to 2nd.
    The Dots was also led by the piching and the defensive play of Josh Tinney won got the win pitching all 7 innings and fanned 11 tiger batters only gave up 2 hits ,and 2 walks, he was great on the mound . In top of third inning after a pop up to 3rd baseman Jarrett Smith , Their was a double play when 3rd baseman Jarrett Smth was pulled way off 3rd base to caught a popup , Josh Tinney covered 3rd and got the 3rd out when the Tiger runner was caught off base, when the play started the Matewan Tigers had the bases loaded.In the 5th inning .Josh Tinney got all 3 outs striking out 2 tiger batters and on the 3rd out was covering 1st when 1st baseman Michael Priddy was pulled off the base to make a play and Josh won the sprint to the base for the 3rd out. The last 3 outs of the game was a throw from 2nd baseman Justin Rueckert to 1st baseman Michael Priddy . The 2nd out was a line out to 1st baseman Michael Priddy . The game ending out, was the 11th strike out by Josh Tinney .(also Michael Priddy hit his 1st home run in a Poca high uniform against one of St. Albans best pitchers Josh tidlow in a later game, and Gabe Cyrus had a double and stole home off him also ) Pat Ball caught both games.
    Hitting for the Dots was - Gabe Cyrus who was 2 of 3 hitting the ball with a trple and 2 RBIs and stole home. Justin Rueckert had a hit and got on off an Error and had 2 RBIs Jarrett Smith was 1 of 2 and had a sacrifice bunt. Mark Cook had a hit and a walk and stole 2 bases off wild piches. Josh Tinney had a hit and a walk . Chris Burdette got on on a fielders choice and stole a base. Adam Knight walked twice and stole a base .Michael Priddy walked.The outfield of Chris Burdette Adam Knight and Kevin Dixon all made great catches , the infield led by All State Shortstop Gabe Cyrus all played just great. the Dots always get great suport from their bench - Josh Odell , Rocky Persinger, James Thornhill , David Scott , Cody Boggs , Shane Cart , Cory Ruerkert , David Yates , Alex Duran.
    Also would like to say the coaches at Poca are a class act and very good Coaches, Ast--- Andy Rawlings , Travis Justice, and Dave Antis, when i told them my Nephew Seth King had never seen any ballgames off any kind they and the players took him right in , treated him great Head Coach P.E. McClanaham gave him one of the game ball and had all his players sigh it , Seth wont let that ball out of his sight, thanks players and coaches and also a special thanks to mrs Ruby Tinney for watching Seth while i anouced the game for are anoucer Richie Eads who had to work . and Eddie Smith in the 2nd game , Jill Smith also is the one who gets and plays the fine music for the boys and thanks toTim Yates for fixing the mike .

POCA 5, MATEWAN 0: Josh Tinney pitched a two-hitter and struck out 11 as Poca blanked visiting Matewan. Gabe Cyrus had two hits and two RBIs for the Dots (2-2).

What a crew!
In between the games last year against Winfield , I snap a shot of the girls going over to watch the Poca Boys boys baseball playing a game. The girls on the front are returning players for the 2001 season. Good luck girls!
