EL CAJON – It's the fifth penalty kick after 95 minutes of scoreless soccer. A goal wins the game, the section Division I championship and the pride of the city.

Senior Peter Katakalidas, the Titans player staring down the net as if it were about to swallow him, had to feel some pressure, right?

“It was just me and the ball, that's all that matters,” Katakalidas said. “I just had to step up.”

Katakalidas nailed the clinching penalty kick in the bottom left corner. After Poway (20-2-4) secured the 1-0 victory, the crowd, players and coaches could exhale.

“I was pacing down the other end of the field. I couldn't watch the shootout,” Poway coach Eugene Morris said. “My brother won (a title) as a player, and I've never had one. Now I've got one as a coach and it's amazing.”

Katakalidas' opportunity was created when Poway senior goalkeeper Ian Weinberg blocked a shot for the first save during the PK period.
