One team that will challenge Rancho Bernardo this season is Poway High, which has begun the year 4-1-2, as of the end of last week.
“We’re off to a good start,” said Titan head coach Gene Morris.
It’s early in the high school boys soccer season, but the team at Poway already has had a major win and losses that is helping to define the squad early on.
Last week, the team defeated Westview 2-1 on the road.
“It was good to beat them at their house,” said Morris. “I think that win is going to get us going.”
On the flip side, the Titans lost to Mt. Carmel 1-0 in the Coronado Islander Tournament semifinal.
“Of course you want to win every game, (but) it’s kind of a good game to lose,” said Morris, who described the loss to the Sundevils as a “gutcheck.” “You never want to lose, but (if you do), lose early.”
Morris is looking to senior forward Warren Ashcroft and captain senior midfielder Alex Henry to set the tone this year.
“Those two, their leadership is big,” said Morris. “We’ve got senior leadership that’s been there.
“If we stay healthy, we’ll do some good things,” the coach added. “Having a deep bench is huge.”
Morris has no hesitation about who will be battling his Titans for Palomar supremacy this season.
“I see us and RB fighting it out for the league title,” the coach said.
And then after that?
“Our expectations are always pretty high,” Morris said. “Our outlook is pretty good.”
Poway and Rancho Bernardo face each other Jan. 28 at RBHS, and then Feb. 18 at Poway.
