Grapevine Sportsmanship & Expectations 2012

All,

I want to make sure everyone understands and conveys to their parents what it is we expect of our wrestlers, parents and coaches.   Each year I'm a little dismayed and disheartened by the number of kids, parents, coaches and teams that end up being disciplined by the league for poor behavior and poor sportsmanship and last year was....bad.   It is my sincerest wish that this year will be injury, trouble and incident free!

Good sportsmanship and good behavior is expected and required by all that participate in, or spectate a match.  Individuals who don't will be either suspended or expelled from the league.  We have a zero tolerance policy and this is the only warning anyone will receive...make sure you pass it on.  Over the past few years we've put multiple teams on probation, suspended wrestlers for a few matches and the year, suspended several coaches for the year and even barred more than a couple parents from ever again attending a Grapevine event.

Parents and Coaches should lead by example.  That means we encourage our kids to do their best, give their all, stand proud if they lose, shake their opponents hand, and have a "you'll get'm next time" attitude.  No kid wakes up in the morning and says "gee, I'd like to lose today!"  I understand why kids sometimes cry or get upset after they lose a match....I don't understand why parents and coaches do.   Outbursts by coaches and parents, arguing with Ref's, cursing or in general being an obnoxious "jerk" around the kids will not be tolerated and any instance reported to the league can expect to be aggressively investigated and one of three things will happen:  suspension for a match(s) or suspension for the year.

There's a phrase I like to use..."Lead by example or you will be the example; either way the wrestler will learn what's acceptable and unacceptable".

Coaches....you are the example.  You set the tone for your wrestlers and parents on how they conduct themselves on and off the mat.  I know some matches are really tuff, really competitive, super disappointing sometimes and even raise our blood pressure with a bad or missed call here and there.   There is no reason and no excuse for a coach to lose their "cool" - none.   Referee's are human and make mistakes or miss things, this is a youth sport and not a NCAA or State Championship and you should use a tough loss to show the kid how to react to adversity that they will surely have in their lifetime.  Don't start going off on another coach, the ref, a parents or even worse the other kid! (and yes, that has happened).

Parents....your kid wants to make you proud of them.   It's a tough, tough sport.  Every ounce of your child's strength and weight is being used against another wrestler...and they are doing the same thing to your kid!   It's really hard on them when they lose because unlike other sports, when they lose...it's just them.   Your child is learning a difficult sport where a year's worth of experience is worth a lot and they know when they've been beat and when they screwed up.  The last thing they need to hear if they lose is "why did we even bother to get up and come"....and yes, I heard a parent actually say that to their kid!   Chances are a hug and "you fought hard" is what they really need when they lose.  Like I said earlier...your child didn't wake up and say to themselves "I want to lose today".

There are really only a few reasons why a match starts late and the #1 reason is getting attendance done.   Hosts/Leaders....I know it's hard but I challenge you to be aggressive with your start times.   If attendance is at 8am and wrestling starts at 8:30am then at 7:55 you tell the team that hasn't yet turned in their attendance you're going to start without them and they can explain to their parents and the other team why you're starting late...or tell them to go home....or hand them the microphone if you have one so they can explain it to everyone.   I know...it's a bit extreme and we all tell our parents to be on time.   It's funny (in a sad way) how parents complain about how long the match is and yet aren't on time to check their kid in to wrestle.    Another tough job for the hosting team is to keep the mat's clear!  Stop the wrestlings...all of it...clear the mats of spectators and when they're clear...start wrestling again.  I know...another extreme it seems but take my advice, being a stickler on keeping the mats clear will have several pay-offs; less potential for injury, less potential for people being bad sports, bout sheets will run faster, traffic jams around mats will decrease and more.  Hosts/Leaders should also be vigilant against individuals who exhibit poor sportsmanship or poor behavior.  Don't be afraid to expel someone from the grounds if they aren't behaving or are being aggressive/abusive towards others.

Here is how a theoretical match should theoretically run.....

Attendance for all teams is turned in 45 minutes prior to the start time (if allowed by your facility).
The host runs the Grapemasher software, tweaks the settings if they have to...runs it again.
15 minutes before start time the hosting team has a little meeting with all the coaches and Ref's...talk about how the day will run, lay out 'the plan' if your splitting a mat and how the mat's are numbered, sportsmanship, little reminders about 2 coaches per corner and wear a badge...etc..
Bout sheets are being printed 5-10 minutes before the wrestling starts.
Referee's are doing a quick little inspection of the teams lined up....5-10 minutes before starting.
As the bout sheets are being printed team Representatives are starting to work through hand bouts.
The host makes announcements 1 minute before start time...the usual....stay in the bleachers, keep mats clear, don't roam the school, stay out from under the bleachers...some may play the anthem or say the pledge...and "LETS HAVE FUN!"...
Exactly at start time.....the first match starts.
3-4 hours later...done at a reasonable time, every kid wrestles at least once..hopefully twice, no injury's and no incidents with a coach, parent or wrestler.

What a perfect match day!......so if it's that easy, why doesn't it happen all the time?

-Parents should arrive early so they can ensure they aren't the reason why attendance is late.
-Parents should keep their kid(s) in the bleachers and in designated areas of the facility/school they are at.
-Parents should keep their kids out from under the bleachers.
-Parents should make sure kids are racing and running the halls.
-Parents should stay off the mats and keep their kids off the mats.
-Parents should help their kid pay attention for when they wrestle and be at the mat on time.
-Parents should not use abusive, incitefull or vulgar language around the kids.
-Parents should be encouraging to their kids when they lose.
-Parents and their kids should stay away from the head table!  Ask your coach!

-Coaches should wear their badge at all times.
-2 Coaches per corner only...and that doesn't mean stand behind the two that are there at the edge of the match and start yelling/coaching.
-Coaches should help keep the mats clear, even if you're visiting...and don't be afraid to tell other kids/parents from other teams.
-Coaches should COMMUNICATE with their parents about delays, how the mats are laid out, etc...
-Coaches should COMMUNICATE with parents and other coaches about hand bouts and why it is they were paired. (This is the #1 problem when complaints are investigated.  Coaches quite simply don't tell parents and other coaches what's going on with a mismatched handbout and people and coaches get irate during and after the handbout).
-Coaches should remember we are here to teach kids how to wrestle, how to win and how to lose!  Be nice, be supportive, keep your cool, and watch the foul language.
-Coaches should help "police" the school/facility.  If you see a child doing something they shouldn't, say something...even if they aren't on your team!  Be nice, but be firm and tell them to stop.
-Coaches keep wrestlers and parents away from the head table.  There are no "State Secrets" that the hosting team is keeping from them and as things come out, they will inform you..and you will inform them :-)   When you know how many match's their kid has, you'll let them know....the only thing parents and wrestlers do when they go to the head table is slow things down!

Ratings.

I've never shared rating information with parents.  It can cause problems.   The goal of the league is for every wrestler to have a 50/50 win/loss record.   Ratings have nothing to do with skill.   You can debate me forever on this issue...but if a wrestler is winning their rating goes up and if they are losing their rating goes down.   That's true for any kid whether they've wrestled for 1 year or 8 years....we "steer" their record.   This challenges them and makes sure they don't lose every match.  No kid wants to be in a sport if they always lose and the 50/50 rule tries to keep that from happening.

Explain to your parents this concept....#2 complaint when investigated is they don't understand how their kid loses to another kid that seems to be so much better than them.  Explain to them the rating system and how the Grapemasher software pairs kids up.   + or -  1 year in age, 1 rating and 10% weight maximum.  Make sure they understand that a 10 year old, weighing 80 lbs, rated a 3....can wrestle an 11 year old, weighing 88lbs, rated a 4.    The software makes a 'first pass' which tries to find an "exact match" for their kid for at least one match....it does a second pass and if it can't pair up people it goes to the 1/1/10% to find a match.

I hope this email doesn't read...condescending or incredulous.  I'm plain spoken and try not to mix words and I know it can come across that way sometimes.   Pass it on....Zero tolerance for poor sportsmanship and poor behavior.   Incidents will be investigated and enforcement will be harsh.

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday and I truly wish each Team, Coach, parent and wrestler a safe, injury free and rewarding 2012 wrestling season.

These competitions are usually held on Saturday or Sundays beginning in January. Our youngest club wrestlers (ages 5-7) will mainly work on beginner skills and wrestle in house. The intention of the league is to create an atmosphere for the youth wrestler from Kindergarten through 8th grade, which will aid in the teaching of skills, development of sportsmanship, and the encouragement of continued participation in the sport of wrestling into High School and beyond. There also are Exhibition matches against other wrestling clubs in the area; these matches may be held at the Pennwood gym, PHS, or away. Select wrestlers may be required to wrestle off for a spot to compete in Dual Meets, Tournaments or against other select teams. For more information call Chris Clarke (215-949-0365) or Ed Dayton (215-385-1060)
