Clutch Field Goal Salvages 24 24 Tie in Red Deer
The long snap, the hold and the kick have to be near perfect; especially with the added pressure of no time left on the clock. SB Sean Brown, WR Adam Cottrell and K Steve Wozimirsky saved the day for the Panthers with a clutch 38 yd field goal to salvage a 24 24 tie with the Bucs in Red Deer last night. Parkland was missing numerous starters, but QB Bernie Huedepohl did an admirable job of running the Panther offence, despite losing star RB Craig Carr early in the first quarter after being dragged down from behind on a scary play which was flagged against Red Deer for a UR. The Bucs opened the scoring on a big pass and run play to take the lead 7 0. The Panthers responded capping off a drive with a TD run by RB Jason Loosemore to make it 7-7 early in the second quarter. The Panthers defence gave up another big play to fall behind 14 7. K Steve Wozimirsky answered with a field goal and a rouge on the ensuing kick off to make it a 14 11 game at the half. The Panthers fell behind 21- 11 in the third quarter until RB Jason Loosemore rushed for his second major to close the gap to 21 18. Mid way through the 4th quarter, Big Woz connected for his second field goal to tie the game up at 21 21, but the Bucs were able to run the ball effectively and chew up the clock to kick what looked like the game winning field goal with just 1:11 left on the clock to go ahead 24 21. The Panthers had good fortune on their side when QB Bernie Huedepohl scrambled to get out of bounds, Red Deer was flagged for unnecessary roughness; the penalty moved the ball into scoring range setting up the last play heroics for Big Woz and his special team unit to come through.
Next up for the Panthers is the Edmonton Seahawks at West District Park in Spruce Grove Saturday, August 8th. Kick off is at 7:00pm.
