The Oscoda Lady Owls soccer team hosted the Ogemaw Heights Falcons on Saturday afternoon and after a hard fought, injury delayed match, the Owls were victorious, 2-1.
The two teams battled it out through the first half with the Owls taking 12 shots and the Falcons, 10. As the whistle blew, the score remained tied at zero. Oscoda had their chances with several clear breakaways but the finishing shots were lacking. Ogemaw missed a Penalty Kick in the 37th minute that Oscoda Keeper, Nicole Jackson, made a diving stop on. The game was delayed for 25 minutes after a Falcon suffered a knee injury and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. (Her condition is not known at this time) Oscoda finally tallied seven minutes into the second half when Tricia McDonald and Rushelle Sidebottom teamed up and McDonald scored her 11th of the year. Sidebottom picked up the assist on a nice pass. Ogemaw answered back just seven minutes later when their big gun, Kristi Killackey, shook the Owl defense and found the net. Oscoda took the lead for good in the 68th minute when McDonald pulled the defense to her and then found Dani Griffin with a pass that Dani nailed for the game winner. Both squads had several more chances, including another missed Penalty Kick, this time by Oscoda. The Falcons had a last second shot that banged into the outside of the net to end the match.
Jackson came up big in goal with 13 saves. Leading the defense was Margaret Negro with 8 intercepts, Jodie Astrom with 6 steals, Erika Nolff with 8 steals and 5 intercepts and Katia Kotula with 12 intercepts and 6 steals.
"The girls played with great passion today and hopefully that can continue through the end of the season. All the remaining matches mean so much to the success of our year", was how Assistant Coach Tim Colborn summed up the match.
The Owls are now 6-7 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
