Rangers Win FC Delco Players Cup

The Olney Rangers' (U14 boys) were crowned Champions in the highly competitive, FC Delco Players Cup over the 2008 Memorial Day weekend with four shut-outs, fourteen goals for and 1 goal against. The FC Delco Players Cup is one of the highest ranked youth soccer tournaments in the US. The Rangers, who had not played a game in several weeks, got off to a slow start tying the Albertson Academy (NYE) in the first round 0-0. In the second round, the Rangers posted a solid 6-0 victory over the LDC United (PAE). In round three, the Rangers beat Toms River Galaxy (NJ) 4-0 to win their bracket and secure their spot in the semi-final round. In the semi-final round, the Rangers outplayed the Marlboro blue Lightening and won the match by a score of 2-0 -- the Rangers' fourth shut-out of the tournament -- to advance to the final round. In the final round, the Rangers had another chance to play the Albertson Academy, who had advanced to the semi-final round as the tournament wildcard. The Albertson Academy upset the Region I Champions, the New Jersey Gunners to advance to the finals. In the final round, the Rangers had a momentary lapse and the Albertson team managed to get the first and only goal against the Rangers. The Rangers responded magnificently and equalized the score within minutes. The Rangers scored again giving them a 2-1 lead. With the Rangers' solid defense, they were able to hold onto the lead and claim tournament victory. In a moving award ceremony, the Rangers were presented with the FC Delco U14 Boys Andrew McDonough Trophy. This perpetual trophy was named to honor the memory of Andrew McDonough, a 14 year old FC Delco player who lost his battle with leukemia on July 14, 2007. Andrews parents, Joe and Chris, and sister, Ali, were in attendance, and Joe's simple message was touching and affecting. He reminded parents and players to relish the opportunities that they have to play (or watch their sons play) and to cherish every moment. More information about Andrew's remarkable story can be found at www.bepositive.org.

A little over a week before the prestigious USYS Region I Soccer Tournament was set to begin in Virginia Beach, the Olney Rangers received a phone call from the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA), inviting them to participate in the Region I tournament as a wildcard team representing the state of Maryland.  The Rangers accepted the invitation and traveled to Virginia Beach for the esteemed event.

In addition to the Rangers, the following teams participated in the competition: Connecticut #1 West Hartford Wolves; Connecticut #2 FSA Soccer Plus; Delaware Kirkwood Ajax; Eastern New York Bayside Flames; Maine Blackbear United FC; Maryland #1 Calverton Flames; New York West Rochester FC; PA West Beadling; Vermont Synergy FC; Virginia VA Rush Swoosh; and West Virginia WVSC Titans.

In the first preliminary round match, the Rangers were up against the WNY State Champions, Rochester FC.  Unfortunately, the boys were without their coach, they made some costly mistakes, and ultimately lost 3-1.  Tim scored the single goal for the Rangers in this match.  With Coach Pete leading the team in the second round against Vermont’s Synercy FC, the Rangers came out strong and dominated the entire game winning 4-0.  Brad scored 2 for the Rangers, also scoring for the Rangers were Christopher and Jocko.  In the third preliminary round, the Rangers posted a solid 2-0 victory over the Calverton Flames, also from Maryland.  Brad and Spencer scored for the Rangers.  With this victory, the Rangers secured a spot in the semi-final round.

In the semi-final round, the Rangers went up against Eastern New York’s Aston Villa Flames.  The Rangers played well and won the match 2-1, securing a spot in the final round.  Brad scored both goals for the Rangers.

In the final round, with an opportunity to avenge their first round loss, the Rangers once again went up against the WNY State Champions, Rochester FC.  In this final round, with Coach Pete leading the team, the Rangers dominated the match and won 2-0.  Jocko and Brad scored the goals for the Rangers.  This victory gives OBGC Soccer its first ever regional championship -- CONGRATULATIONS RANGERS -- keep up the great work!
