The Olney Rangers' (U14 boys) were crowned Champions in the highly competitive, FC Delco Players Cup over the 2008 Memorial Day weekend with four shut-outs, fourteen goals for and 1 goal against. The FC Delco Players Cup is one of the highest ranked youth soccer tournaments in the US. The Rangers, who had not played a game in several weeks, got off to a slow start tying the Albertson Academy (NYE) in the first round 0-0. In the second round, the Rangers posted a solid 6-0 victory over the LDC United (PAE). In round three, the Rangers beat Toms River Galaxy (NJ) 4-0 to win their bracket and secure their spot in the semi-final round. In the semi-final round, the Rangers outplayed the Marlboro blue Lightening and won the match by a score of 2-0 -- the Rangers' fourth shut-out of the tournament -- to advance to the final round. In the final round, the Rangers had another chance to play the Albertson Academy, who had advanced to the semi-final round as the tournament wildcard. The Albertson Academy upset the Region I Champions, the New Jersey Gunners to advance to the finals. In the final round, the Rangers had a momentary lapse and the Albertson team managed to get the first and only goal against the Rangers. The Rangers responded magnificently and equalized the score within minutes. The Rangers scored again giving them a 2-1 lead. With the Rangers' solid defense, they were able to hold onto the lead and claim tournament victory. In a moving award ceremony, the Rangers were presented with the FC Delco U14 Boys Andrew McDonough Trophy. This perpetual trophy was named to honor the memory of Andrew McDonough, a 14 year old FC Delco player who lost his battle with leukemia on July 14, 2007. Andrews parents, Joe and Chris, and sister, Ali, were in attendance, and Joe's simple message was touching and affecting. He reminded parents and players to relish the opportunities that they have to play (or watch their sons play) and to cherish every moment. More information about Andrew's remarkable story can be found at www.bepositive.org.
