Competitive Soccer Overview

Competitive Overview: Competitive soccer is intended to help develop recreation players to advance their soccer skills. It requires more time and financial commitment than Recreation soccer, but less than premier soccer. Fall & Spring competitive soccer is available to both boys and girls U8 through U14. Since it is competitive, players must try out to make the team.

Team Formation:  Teams consist of 12 - 18 players depending on age and are coached by licensed, experienced coaches. This is a competitive soccer division and players are selected biased on tryouts. Players are expected to attend fall tryouts.

Player Criteria: If you are unsure if your child should play at this level, here are some guidelines. All players should be reasonably skillful and possess an age appropriate understanding of field positions. They should have the basic understanding of the "Laws of the Game", display fair sportsmanship, and have a desire to improve.

Tryouts - Registration for fall and spring tryouts will be held on Monday June 23 and Tuesday June 24. All tryouts will be held at Martin Middle School beginning at 6 pm. There is on-site registration for anybody that did not register online; however, online registration is preferred.

Selection Process - Three or four evaluators usually conduct the selection process with one of them assigned as head coach for that age. Players are evaluated on skill, attitude, and coachability. If there are two competitive teams in the same age group the head coaches will determine player placement for each player. Oceaneers makes every effort to keep the process as unbiased as possible and will notify the parents in a timely manner as to whether their player made the team or not. Players that are selected for teams need to indicate their acceptance of the offered position and are expected to follow the player commitment policy. Upon acceptance a minimum payment of 25% fall fees is required before final team placement. Players that are not placed on a competitive team or do not accept the offered position will have an option to play in the Recreational program.

The Season

Practices - Practices generally start in August. Practice is usually held twice a week for around 1-1/2 hours per session.

Tournaments - Select teams normally participate in 2 tournaments during the year, selected by the coach. It is always an option for teams to decide to play in additional tournaments which will add additional costs, travel etc.

Fall Games - Fall competitive games normally begin the first weekend after Labor Day. The season runs about the same length of time as Recreational. Normally, there are 12 league games in the season and are typically played on Sunday. Competitive Soccer also requires travel.

Player Time - There is no guarantee of playing time on a competitive team, however the club's philosophy is to try to provide players with the opportunity to play at least half the game. However, this may vary due to missed practice, attitude problems, injury, etc.

Spring Season - Spring training often starts in late February or early March. Depending on the League, games will start in March and can run through May.

Leagues - The teams may play in different leagues depending on the amount of teams available within each league and the quality and skill level of the team.

Equipment

Soccer kit - Oceaneers teams use both a home and away soccer kits. A soccer kit is defined in LAW 4: "Players Equipment" as five separate items: Shirt, Shorts, Socks, footwear, and shin pads. All players are responsible for purchasing their own soccer kits. Competitive players will be responsible for purchasing all parts of their soccer kits. The competitive Uniform includes 2 jerseys, 1 short and 1 pair of socks available for purchase through Gob Shop in Warren after tryouts. In addition to the required Kit, the competitive team may be purchasing additional uniform items which could include backpacks, warm-ups, and training jersey. Coaches and team managers will coordinate these requirements with the players and parents.
