Ocean Volleyball Club: 2008-2009 Season
Ocean Volleyball Club This year will be the fourth year for OVC. OVC has been the largest boys’ club in the area for the last two years, consisting of three teams. The goal of OVC has been to make volleyball available and affordable to as many players as possible. We want each player at OVC to learn and understand the game, to be able to play, and to leave with more knowledge and ability then when they joined. OVC has been able to do this while winning: OVC 17s finished 1st at Regionals, OVC 18s finished 2 at Regionals, and OVC 16s finished 12th at East Coast Championship (2nd highest finish from teams in this region). Furthermore, OVC produced ten 1st or 2nd Team All District high school performers this year including one player of the year. Questions about the 2006-2007 Season? Answers here.
Q: What is Ocean Volleyball Club (OVC)?
A: Ocean Volleyball Club is a Junior Olympics' volleyball club.
Q: Who's running the club?
A: The club was founded and is run by Bill and Toney Reeves.
Q: Who are the coaches this year?
A: The 18s&U will be coached by Bill Reeves, 17s&U by Paris Winfield, and the 15s&U by Vince.
Q: Who can participate in the club?
A: Any boys [18 or younger] interested in playing competitive volleyball can come out. For the 2006-2007 season, there will be no girls' team(s).
Q: Is this club ball based purely on skill?
A: No, the teams are based on age groups (ie. 18s & under, 17s & under, etc).
Q: Do the teams travel?
A: Yes, all the teams travel to nearby tournaments, such as ones at the Richmond Convention Center in Richmond, VA. (Check back soon for a complete list of tournament schedules.) In addition, the upper teams (18s & 17s) this year will travel a little further to the national tournament (stay tuned for official schedules).
Q: How much does it cost?
A: For the 2006-2007 season, there will be two different costs relating to the upper teams and the lower teams:
Upper team(s) cost per player: [will be added soon]
Lower team(s) cost per player: [will be added soon]
Q: Wow, that's expensive!
A: Though it seems that this club is very costly, compare our fees to other clubs and there's a very apparent difference. Most teams' fees are in the thousands.
Coastal Volleyball Club (Chesapeake, VA)- $2,000-$4,000
Richmond Volleyball Club (Richmond, VA)- $1,500-$2,500
Q: What if I can't afford to play?
A: Don't be afraid you can't play because of financial concerns. We are a club with the mindset as one where we do not run the club in order to make money. This club is a way for players to practice and gain experience. We have sponsorship programs to aid with the financial aspect.
Q: Sponsorship programs?
A: To aid players with the financial concerns, we sell advertisement spaces in a team booklet (similar to yearbook spaces or other commemorative sport books). Any business(es) interested in sponsoring OVC can "purchase" an ad space in the OVC booklet.
Q: What else does OVC offer besides purely sports?
A: OVC is a club beyond purely a sports club. Besides learning how to cooperate with others on a team, players learn the principles of respect and sportsmanship. This respect will become present in many situations including respect for the other teams, coaches, adults, parents, teachers, employers, etc.
This season, players will also not only play but learn about several other aspects of life. Players will volunteer their time and effort to giving back to the community and help others. Players will become educated, or reiterated, about the effects of alcohol on driving.
