Greg Mathews Scores Winning Touchdown vs Notre Dame
greg3

Played for the Niners in 1998-1999

The senior wide receiver led Michigan with five catches for 68 yards and the winning touchdown against Notre Dame, and his role was clear: U-M went to him mostly in desperation, knowing he has fabulous hands.

That's what happened on third-and-12 in the first quarter when he made his stunning, 40-yard, one-handed grab. He was targeted on fourth-and-11 on the drive just before halftime, again when U-M needed a safety catch to open the final drive. He was targeted on the winning TD after LaTerryal Savoy had dropped an end-zone pass the play before.

Even on Tate Forcier's interception, a play Mathews conceded was his fault because he misread the coverage and ran the wrong route, it was a third-and-11 and he was expected to keep the drive alive.

"After that happened I felt bad, and I knew I had to definitely make up for it," Mathews said. "I didn't want to think about sitting in the locker room and having to go through what I've been through. ... I definitely wanted to atone for that mistake."

With Junior Hemingway out, Darryl Stonum hurt and Savoy missing his chance, U-M went to its safety valve to win the game and Mathews was there for another bailout.

Former 49er Head Coach

Porter named football head coach at Channel Islands

As someone from the inside of the Channel Islands High football program for the past seven years, Gary Porter has keen insight for its future.

With a goal in mind of turning Channel Islands into a championship team, the 45-year-old Porter was hired as the program’s head coach, announced athletic director Manny Lara on Monday.

“I would like to see it return to some of its past successes,” said Porter, a 1981 Channel Islands graduate.

Porter, who is working on his teaching credential, will be a walk-on coach. To handle the football program’s administrative duties, former Rio Mesa assistant Tom Voshell has been hired for the staff, Lara said.

Channel Islands won six league championships from 1976 to 1988 and was a section runner-up in 1987. The program has not reached the playoffs since 2004, but was one win away from qualifying last fall.

“The kids learned to work last year,” said Porter. “They know it will take more work to get to that next level. We need to find a way to be competitive in our own league.”

Channel Islands was 3-7 last fall and placed fourth in the Pacific View League.

No wholesale changes are planned in an offense that averaged 189.8 yards passing per game, although the number of attempts could reduce by upgrading the running game.

“We will continue to run a pro-style offense,” said Porter. “We won’t go away from the spread.”

Porter will continue to serve as the program’s defensive coordinator, a position he held for the past four years under Kernon Machado.

Strong ties to the school and the Channel Islands community were key reasons why Porter was promoted to the position over a field of more than 10 candidates, said Lara.

“Gary and Tom are from the community and can relate to our kids,” said Lara.

“When I talked to the kids after we hired Gary, they were all enthused. Gary is a good communicator with them.”

Porter and his wife, Beverly, are the parents of Gary, Brittany and Nicolas. Gary and Nicolas were all-Pacific View League athletes at Channel Islands.

Yoshell, a 1993 St. Bonaventure graduate, was a varsity assistant for a Santa Fe Christian team that went 45-5 and won three CIF championships. He has taught at a Nike football camp in San Diego since 2004.

Niners Shine in Channel Islands win
A beaming Gary Porter could barely contain his excitement following his first win as head coach of the Channel Islands High football team. The Raiders made a key goal-line stop in the fourth quarter and sealed it with a 6-yard touchdown run by Albert Leon in a 26-15 win Friday night against visiting Fillmore. “Words can’t describe it,” Porter said. Channel Islands (1-0) more than proved its “grit and determination” as Porter described it in the fourth quarter. Ahead 20-15, and possessing the football, Raiders quarterback Bobby Diaz was picked off by a diving Nick Paz at the Channel Islands 44-yard line. Fillmore (0-1), relying on the legs of Paz and Zach Golson, marched to the Channel Islands 3-yard line, but the Raiders made consecutive stops on third and fourth down. “You dream of winning a game on a goal-line stand,” Porter said. “That was just an outstanding play right there. That’s just the kids bearing down and making the play.” Channel Islands took over, and three plays later Diaz found a streaking Alfredo Raya for a 71-yard catch-and-run up the left sideline. Four plays later, Leon burst up the middle into the end zone. The Raiders benefited from a strong performance by senior quarterback Diaz, who threw for 271 yards, including two strikes of 71 yards. Fullback Richard Palmer, playing beyond his sophomore status, ran for 51 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run in the third quarter after starter Ty Camarillo came out with a cramp. Channel Islands offense overcame a slow start that featured a few dropped passes on its opening drive. “At halftime, we just said ‘relax’ and we just started catching everything,” Diaz said. Fillmore put up points first with a quick opening drive. Golson made a 30-yard run and Paz made a 19-yard run to the 9-yard line. Quarterback Corey Cole then found Johnny Golson in the end zone for a 7-0 lead. Fillmore was hampered by an inability to hold onto the football, fumbling six times.

PYFL board approves 2008 divisional change.

February 8, 2008

The Pacific Youth Football League has voted through the most progressive weight classification in youth football for the 2008 season. Chapters have put through a fifth level of competition, the Midget division, to go with its current divisions to provide the safest and most competitive playing environment to-date.

The new Midget division essentially splits the largest current division, Juniors, into an 11 year old skewing level and a 12 year old skewing level. The PYFL did extensive research, examining player safety, the current level of competition and input from coaches on every level and put forth these new player weight guidelines to provide divisions that maximize safety, competition and player development. The proposal was nearly unanimously passed. “These divisions really provide the safest and most competitive playing environment around. We are extremely excited about the continuing evolution of the playing levels that has resulted in something that as a league, we couldn’t feel better about” said PYFL President Rett Hicks. PYFL Athletic Director Verne Merrill says these new divisions do the best job of finding an appropriate playing environment for every player – “We are able to keep kids of similar age and size together while still finding places for the smaller players to compete in a fair environment. We have been able to make the divisions more competitive without putting players in divisions based on perceived skill levels.”

For more information, please visit www.pyfl.com.

The following weight and age classes are set for the 2008 Season.

Pee Wee Division:                              Weight Max

Ages 7 and 8 Years Old                           105 Lbs.

Bantam Division:

Oxnard 49ers rely on ground game to control tempo of game to win 14-12

over the North Oxnard Warrior Black team.

North Oxnard returns a 49ers fumble 80 yards for a touchdown with 3 minutes to go gives

North Oxnard a chance to Tie

but two point conversion fails with Matthew Velasquez making the stop at the 2 yard line.

Niners hold on to the ball to run out to run out clock and seal the game.

Ofensively Angel Sapien,Paul Vasquez, Oscar Garcia, and Alfred de la Cerda ran the ball well.

Leading the offensive line were Tyrone Faanono, Javier Vazquez, Victor Nuno, and Jessie Ayala.

Rick Estrada and Trey Howard anchored the receiving core.

This was the second time in the last 3 weeks these teams have played each other

with the niners coming out ahead both times.

The Oxnard 49er Family would like to thank the Armstrong family for joining our team this year. We are grateful to have been given the opportunity to get to know their son Conner Armstrong and value the time he has spent with us. He is a young man of honor and exemplifies determination, sportsmanship and good will.

It is unfortunate that he has not been allowed to remain on our team during the playoffs. Others think that they have gained an advantage by denying a talented athlete the opportunity to finish with his team. We may have lost that battle Conner, but we have won the war. We have gained much more from the experience, many friendships have been made, and we stand tall as a family knowing that our intentions were honorable and just.

As always keep the faith and may God bless you and your family.

Why I Like Being an Oxnard 49er?

To me being a 49er means many things. But the main things are the spirit of the team. How much our coaches push us to do good, and how much I have learned this year. All of these things mean much to me and to the rest of the team. Of all the years I have played football my 49er experience has been the best. The 49ers are awesome.

The spirit of the team is great. All of the coaches encourage the players to help pump up the team. The Team Captains are really great at pumping up the team spirit up. The team spirit is very important to our team. Let's say if we are losing a game we need our spirit up and when our spirit goes up our game goes up also.

The coaches are great. Coach Duckett is great at trying new people at different positions. Coach Tutogi is and awesome pusher but in the end it is worth it. Coach Tony is good at helping us (the players) when we get hurt to get up. Coach Mia is really good at observing the players at practice and seeing our problems, the coaches are awesome.

This year I have learned the most ever. For the first time because of the good coaching I have learned to run the ball. I also play a whole lot of other positions, Also I have seen
Improvement every day of new and returning players. This year has been awesome.

This year has been great. This year has been great because this year of the 49ers has been my best ever. Since the coaches have been great everyone has been able to try something new. That is why I am proud to be a 49er.

Another good thing about being a 49er is how much our coaches talk about the importance of doing good in school. They also expect us to show respect to our parents and families. I believe that being a 49er has helped me gain more knowledge of football and become a better person. This is why I like being an Oxnard 49er.

Callum Steff, Juniors

The thing I Like about being an Oxnard 49er is being part of a loyal team. I like how our metaphor is "Pride comes from the Heart" Other teams have stuff like "Kill and Destroy" or "Destroy to Survive". My dad makes me come out here but I don't know how life would be if I didn’t play football. Coach Al has taken away my sensitivity by yelling and swearing at us. I don't like it but it's made a better player and me tougher.

Coach Mark know some really great plays, Most of the time he know which play to run. I thing he got the plays from other places and changed them to his own plays. But out of all the coaches, besides my dad, Coach Jorge is my favorite; He always helps me when I am in trouble at practice or in the game. He also is strict, but he doesn't swear, during practice. One reason I like playing football is because you can hit people when you’re angry without getting in trouble.

Football also prepares you for stuff that you are going to face in life. You are going to work hard, you are going to get yelled at, and you are going to get hurt and take pain once and awhile.

My Dad makes me come out here; there are times I want to not play. But my dad somehow encourages me to play hard, keep trying, and don't quit. But 9 out of 10 times he tells one of his stories when he was playing football in high school a how he was the best football player. My mom always talks to me when I don't want to play or when I get discouraged. The people who have been helping me the most playing football are my parents. They always keep me staying strong when I'm in doubt that is why I play for the Oxnard 49ers.

Matthew Velasquez, Bantams

This is my first year of playing football. I feel honored to be part of the Oxnard 49ers football team. I have learned a lot from my coaches and teammates. Being a part of this team has taught me how to be a team player, to take pride in my team and myself, and to stay focused.

It takes a lot to be able to play with so many other boys on and off the field. We learn a lot from each other, but most importantly, we learned to play together. By playing as a team, it has taught us to look out for one another and be one with each other especially on the field.

Being a 49er has also taught me to take pride in my team. Win or lose, we still stand strong. It also taught me to take pride in myself and in everything I do. I am proud to wear my 49er jersey and represent my team.

The Coaching staff helps to keep me focused on and off the field. They make sure that we are doing well in school and that we put our education above everything else. They check our grades to make sure we stay focused. Although they do a lot of yelling, our coaches teach us discipline to keep show and us focused us never give up.

So, My answer to your question "What I Like About being an Oxnard 49er?"
Focus, Discipline and Pride! But the most important reason "My TEAM MATES!"

Daryl Peterson, seniors

My name is Jorden Chambers and I play football for the Oxnard 49ers. What I like about being an Oxnard 49er is that I’m a tight end and I get to block, catch, run and sometimes pass which I don’t do. Being a tight end is fun and great because I love to catch the ball and rub, Ya, there’s a time to play around and goof off, but there is always a time to be serious. Being a tight is a big responsibility because I am the one like a receiver who catches the ball and gets touchdowns and that is why being the tight end is a big responsibility.

I love playing for the 9ers because of the great coaches. Coach Lou is great; He motivates the team with his loud yelling, foul language, and his way of coaching the football team. Coach Derek is wonderful the whole team really loves the way he motivates us AAHHMM. He shouts “Run Faster”. And as we run he is eating Jack in the Box. Now, now not saying it’s a bad thing but it is a little rude. Now here comes the third coach, Coach Mike. Coach Mike was about to become a pro football player until he got sacked and busted his knee. Therefore his career was trashed and now he’s stuck teaching the 49ers football team. Coach Mike is a great help towards the our defensive line, Next is Coach Miller, He used to show up to practice for the receivers, but still he was a great help also for the receivers. Finally there is the great, maestros, and strong Coach Ruben. Coach Ruben is the one who started it all, he is the one I look up to, he is THE MAN.

Anyways to get away from that I enjoy being a tight end because of my simple routes. One play there are three guys on the opposite side of me and I’m doing an isole(I think that’s how you spell it) There’s way more plays but I’m going over the plays I like. And the other play I like most is I Right 32 Slant Pass and that’s when I do a five and out.

What I ultimately like about being an Oxnard 49er is that when we lose or win we are always together. Like our first game we lost because we weren’t working together as a team. The second game we won because we worked together and when we work together we win. After that we understood the way of working together.

In conclusion I love being on the Oxnard 49ers Football team because it is great, we have great coaches, and we have a great team, and that is why I love being on the Oxnard 49ers football Team

                                THE END

Jorden Chambers, Seniors

I just wanted to know what ever happen to the gold coast
49ers? My son played for coach Ruben Velasquez back in
1998 and 1999, before we retired navy and move back to
orlando florida. We would love to give him an update Greg
II progress as student/athlete and high school football
recruit. He stands 6'4" 195;WR;4.5; great hands, superb
with down field blocking and knows how to use his
size, athleticism and leaping ability to his advantage.
He's caught national attention from major programs such
as: Michigan;Iowa;Perdue;Iowa St; Pittsburgh; Auburn;
Florida;Florida St;Georgia Tech;North Carolina;N.C. St;

Thanks
