: About Us
Thursday, February 22Oakland University Wrestling Club
As of the winter of 2007, we the students of Oakland University have established OU's first Club Wrestling program. The main goal behind starting the Oakland University Wrestling Team is to promote and develop an intercollegiate wrestling program for the students of Oakland University, and prospective local high school students.
Furthermore, our Wrestling Club Constitution states:
"The purpose of the Wrestling Team is to promote and develop an intercollegiate wrestling program for the students of Oakland University. The development of the wrestling team will provide a student/athlete recruiting opportunity for new students to the college, appropriate training for the members of the wrestling team, competitive intercollegiate opportunities for the team, and support for the Greater Oakland County Area."
Just for clarification purposes, this is an Oakland University club team, and being that we are non-profit club sport us wrestlers are responsible for all of our own expenditures. This coming year we expect to build a team to compete in the NCWA North Central conference along with Grand Valley and Mott Community College.
The NCWA was developed to compensate for the loss of varsity wrestling programs across the country. Since most schools don't offer varsity wrestling programs affiliated with the NCAA, many Universities are turning toward club programs. This way it doesn't disrupt Title IX balance and the limitations it has on the spending of money proportionally among genders and their varsity teams.
With all of that being said, I hope that this is great news for all wrestlers and coaches in the greater Oakland County. If you are as excited as we are, then this program will take off and be dominant for yearsto come. We have a lot of wrestling talent in South-Eastern Michigan, and this is a great opportunity for wrestlers who can’t afford to go away from home, in order to further their education and wrestling careers. So please give us your support and most importantly, let's give young men in South-Eastern Michigan an opportunity to shine.
