Sharks Repeat as Dizzy Dean District 2 Champions!
The Tuesday evening affair at Oregon Park was a real thriller with the Sharks edging out the Powder Springs Indians 10-7 in the championship game. The Sharks were the visiting team and grabbed their bats eager to come out swinging. The Indian defense was sharp and quickly sat down the Sharks, with Cameron Anglin providing the only hit of the inning. The shut out fired up the Indian faithful. The players managed several hits and scored 4 runs before 1st baseman Zach Elmy and 2nd baseman Braedon Bensley were able to set them down. However, the Sharks would answer with 3 runs in their half of the 2nd inning, with hits by Jarrett Guest and RBI’s by Blake Evans, Brett Wood and Aaron Bensley. Great defense by right fielder Cameron Anglin and a double play by 2nd baseman Braedon Bensley held the Indians scoreless in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Although leading 3-4, the Indian defense was sloppy in the top of the 3rd and the Sharks took full advantage. Jeff Dismukes, Cameron Anglin (RBI), Kyle Reichert (2 RBI’s), Jarrett Guest (RBI), Brett Wood, Zach Elmy (RBI), a bunt by Aaron Bensley to move the runners, and a hit by Mikey Leanos (RBI) all contributed to a maximum allowed 7 runs and the Sharks now had a commanding 10-4 lead. Shortstop Kyle Reichert recorded 2 outs and catcher Cameron Anglin caught a tipped foul ball to quickly sit down the Indians and maintain their lead going into the 4th inning. The Sharks were retired without scoring. The Indians managed 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th before Sharks 2nd baseman Braedon Bensley recorded the first out; pitcher Matthew Shaw alertly gloved a grounder and threw home with the bases loaded to get the lead runner; and left centerfielder Blake Evans threw to Jarrett Guest at 3rd base to get the final out of the inning. The Sharks lead was cut to 10-6. Needing some insurance, the Sharks came to the plate in the top of the 5th, however, the lone hit by Jarrett Guest was not enough to cushion the lead. The Indians came to bat in the bottom of the 5th inning. They would score 1 run before pitcher Shaw, 2nd baseman Braedon Bensley and 3rd baseman Jarrett Guest set them down. Again the lead dwindled and the score was now 10-7 with 1 more inning of play. The Indians continued to fight and it was 3-up, 3-down for the Sharks. But the Sharks were now 3 outs away from taking home the championship trophy. 1st baseman Zach Elmy reached to his left to catch a fly ball for the first out; 3rd baseman Jarrett Guest charged a weak grounder and fired to Elmy for the 2nd out and 2nd baseman Braedon Bensley threw to Elmy for the 3rd and final out. Sharks won by a final score of 10-7 and successfully defend their district championship!
GO SHARKS!
