Orange Lutheran Track and Field Season Preview
The 2009 season has begun! This season begins with excitement as the Lancers look to a combination of youth and experience for success this season. The coaching staff is very excited about the potential that exists in this year’s team. Here is a look at some of the top returners and prospects for the 2009 Lancer Track and Field Team: Girls The Lady Lancers return this spring as the defending 2007 and 2008 Trinity League champions. Despite graduating some stellar seniors last June, a group of young sophomores will look to step in and fill in any gaps. Additionally, a group of talented seniors will lead the team this spring into competition. Senior Staci Foster returns for her senior campaign in the distances. After breaking the school record in the 1600m as a sophomore, her junior season was cut short by injury. Despite the injury, Staci still managed a CIF Finals appearance in the 1600m with a seasonal best of 5:03. Staci returns this spring coming off a very successful fall cross country season that earned her all-league, all-CIF, all-county, and all-state honors. She will lead a very talented core of distance runners that will threaten school and county records in the relays. Staci also returns as the #5 performer in school history in the 800m, and #3 in the 3200m. Senior Skye Atchley also returns as one of the most decorated track athletes in school history. Skye, who is also a basketball player for OLU, culminated her 2008 season with an All-CIF effort in the 300IH (45.2), narrowly missing the school record in that event. Skye is #3 all-time in that event. Additionally, Skye returns as the #2 all-time performer in the 400m (59.2) and has been integral to three consecutive CIF Finals appearances in the 1600m relay. Skye also excels in the horizontal jumps; her personal best of 36’1.75” in the triple jump is #3 all-time. Senior Suzanne Munganga enters her senior year #2 on the all-time high jump list. Her jump of 5’5” in 2008 was the school record until it was broken by one of her teammates later in the season. Suzanne is also a talented short hurdler, winning the 2008 JV league title in that event with a personal best of 16.28 (#8 all-time). Junior Ashley Garcia will add great depth to the sprints and relays. Ashley is #9 all-time in the 100m, #4 in the 200m, and #7 in the 400m. In addition, Ashley was a member of the 400m relay team that broke the school record last spring. A group of “super-sophomores” will greatly impact the Lady Lancer track and field team this spring. Annie Giebelhaus leads this group as the returning Orange County and Trinity League Champion in the high jump. Annie’s jump of 5’6” as a frosh is the highest in school history. Annie was identified as “pre-season” All-State by dyestatcal.com. At the Arcadia Invitational in 2008, Annie won 2 out of three high jump competitions! Multi-event talent Chelsea Larson (10) brings more experience to 2009. Chelsea excelled in just about every event she tried in 2008, making the all-time list in 5 events!! Chelsea is a talented hurdler, thrower and jumper. Her mark of 15.48 in the 100H is #3 all-time. Chelsea has jumped 15’5” in the long jump (#15), 32’3” in the triple jump (#10), and 5’2” in the high jump (t-#4). Chelsea will be integral to dual meet success and will look to push farther into CIF competition as well. Taylor Williams (10) returns as the Trinity League Champion in the 3200m as a frosh. Taylor also boasts a 5:02.84 personal best for 1600m, good for #4 all-time. Her 2:18.14 mark in the 800m is also #4 all time. Taylor was a CIF qualifier in both the 800m and 3200m last spring. Taylor is also coming off a fantastic cross-country season in which she earned all-league, all-county, and all-Cif recognition. Kaelynn Greene (10) was the most dominant sprinter in the Trinity League in 2008 and with more consistent training this winter has hopes of repeating as the League Champion. Kaelynn, who is the reigning 200m League Champion, looks to compete at the CIF Level in 2009. Kaelynn is #3 all-time in the 100m (12.55) and #2 in the 200m (25.77). Like Ashley, Kaelynn was also a part of the 2008 school record relay team. Sophomore Ava Kent will also add depth to the strong distance group for the Lady Lancers. Ava was the frosh/soph OC Champion over 1600m in 2008 (5:11), and a CIF qualifier in the 3200m. Ava, along with Staci and Taylor, was a part of the 4xmile relay team that ran the #2 time in county history. Ava also earned All-Trinity League honors in cross-country this past fall. Jessica Marquardt has risen quickly as one of the team’s elite runners. As a frosh, Jessica ran a 5:33 1600m, but has quickly improved throughout her sophomore year. Jessica’s emergence was clearly seen this past fall in cross-country as she earned All-Trinity League honors. Jessica was also one of the top 10 sophomores in the county in 2008. Other athletes to watch: Krysten Boggs (10) – 27.69 200m, 62.19 400m Miranda Valdez (9) – All-Trinity League in cross-country Nicole Kent (11) – JV Trinity League Champion in Cross Country Boys The 2008 boys team will be remembered for their outstanding character and humility. After narrowly dropping the League Title to Servite, the boys team went on to CIF and had the greatest post-season day in Lancer history. In fact, the team left the stadium with the CIF title. However, after discovering an error in officiating the next day, the team had to relinquish the trophy to the rightful winners, Crespi High School. The reward was in the fact that the right team had won. The lancers graduated some of the best in school history in 2008. It will be hard to replace Chris Woods, Blake Ayles, Sam Delgado, and Cameron Everhart, all school record holders. The team will look to new leaders this spring. Paramount to the success of the Lancers will be the emergence of our frosh/soph athletes. Let’s take a look at some of the returning athletes for 2009: Senior Kyle Dravis has been a mainstay in Lancer track since the day he stepped on campus in 2005. He was a four time Empire League Champion in 2006, and has been instrumental in bringing OLU track success back to the CIF level. Kyle returns as part of a 1600m relay team that has been the two-time defending OC Champions, Trinity League Champions, and CIF Champions during his tenure. Last Spring, Kyle was a member of the 1600m relay team that finished #3 in the state and ran the #5 time in the nation (3:13.98). Kyle was also a part of the all-state 400m relay team that ran 42.24 to break the school record. Kyle is #3 all-time in the 100m, #2 in the 200m, and #3 in the 400m. Joining Kyle will be the school record holder in the 400m, Terrance Brown (12). Terrance has run 49.24 for 400m. He has also shown remarkable versatility in scoring in the horizontal jumps as well. Terrance is a returning member of the 400m and 1600m relay teams as well. Both teams have hopes of qualifying on to the state championship in 2009. Isiah Huss (12) became an elite jumper in 2008. His late-season surge in the long jump landed him at the CIF Championship meet. Isiah jumped 22’0.25”, making him the #2 long jumper in OLU History! Isiah has set his goals high in 2009, a trip to the state meet. Damani Wilson (11) has emerged as a sprinter to be reckoned with. The 2008 Trinity League Champion for 100m returns as the third member of that special relay group from 2008. Damani narrowly missed the school record for 100m in 2008 (11.06), but came up big in the 200m. Damani’s 2008 mark of 22.23 in the 200m is the school record! Damani brings great talent and depth to the short sprints and relays. Ryan Chilcott (11) is a returning CIF qualifier for 1600m. His mark of 4:25.16 was one of the county’s best for a soph in 2008. Ryan is #6 all-time in that event. Ryan was also the OC Frosh/Soph Champion for 1600m in 2008. Ryan has also covered 800m in 2:02.04, good for #7 all-time. Other Athletes to watch: Sam Weber (12) – Senior leader who exemplifies character. Personal best of 52.26 for 400m. Michael Nelson (10) – Great frosh campaign in 400m and 300IH.
