Coaching Education

The South Texas Yout Soccer Association is requiring that all coaches attend a coaching course.  There is a 1 year grace period to take the coarse.  The coarse should reflect the age group you are coaching and be a sactioned  and approved STYSA coarse.  I know this seams like alot, but it is really a very good thing.  It is an effort to ensure that you have the knowledge and techniques to coach children on your team.  The coaching clinics are alot of fun and usually only last one day.   It is a method to make sure our children are being coached appropriately.  This actually a very good thing.  See the link below for more information or email the OCYS board and we will help you with this.

Coaching modules on the SYSA website.

The links are as follows:

U8 Module - http://spindletopsoccer.com/main/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=1&Itemid=

U12 Module - http://spindletopsoccer.com/main/index.php?option=com_docman&task=doc_view&gid=2&Itemid=

Game Play and Attitude

U8 and younger age groups are considered to be non-competitive.  OCYS takes this very seriously.  This age is for teaching skills and team work.  Positive re-enforcement should only be used.  No negative or degrading behavior will be tolerated.  The children dictate the level of competition not the coach or parents.  As the children get older (U9 and up) competition play does increase.  As coaches you should allow this to occur naturally.  OCYS and soccer is about positive behavior, good sportsmanship and setting good examples for out children.

All coaches should have there players from there team tell the referee thank you after each game.

Uniforms

Uniforms are provided by OCYS and will be handed out at the next coaching meeting August 25 starting a 6pm.  Meeting will be held at the First Baptist Church in Orange.  The director of uniforms is Misty Denman.

Fundraiser

Fundraisers will be handed out at the first coaches meeting on August 3.  Fundraisers must be turned in on August 31.  All players are required to participate in the fundraiser and sell at least 3 items.  There is an optional buy out for $25.00.  All buy outs and fundraisers must be turned in on August 31 at the coaches meeting.  Please keep the fundraiser and buy outs organized.

Roster Shirts

Roster shirts will be avaliable for everyone.  This is a great way to support your team.  They will be color specific and have team roster on the back.  Roster shirt oders (order form) must be turned in at the August 31 coaches meeting.

Games

Games will be on Saturday.  U8 teams and younger will play all games at OCYS.  U9 and older will play games at OCYS and travel to other clubs and play.  U7 ages and up will have a referee.  Game schedules will be posted on the OCYS web site.

  • Make Up GamesAll make up games must be approved by the OCYS Board and a referee must be present.

Practice

Practice is optional and not required, but strongly recommended.  All teams and age groups can practice twice a week.  Practice can be held at the OCYS soccer fields or any location that is suitable for such activity.  Make sure there is plenty of water for hydration available.  We suggest requiring each child to bring water bottle (not coke).  There are many sources for soccer coaching, check the web site for help.  If you practice at the OCYS fields follow these rules:

  1. Be courteous to other teams and share practice areas.
  2. Pick up all trash.
  3. We encourage collaboration and practice with other teams.
  4. No alcohol, pets, drugs or guns at the fields (Kids Safe).
  5. Do not drive a vehicle on the fields.

Please check with board to make sure your practice site has an insurance practice site approval form.   Email the board the location you will be practicing and we will fill out and turn in the form for you.

As coaches, we are always faced with countless challenges with youth soccer.  Besides the challenges of dealing with young players, here are some other issues for which we will try to provide you with some assistance.

  • Coaching knowledge

  • Team/player records

  • Injuries

  • Player/Parent Issues

We would like to help you with your endeavors to become the best coach possible for your players.

Training

There will be coaching module courses held within this area from time to time.  As this information becomes available, we will provide that information.  Other modules are currently scheduled around STYSA.   (Currently scheduled modules).  Also, visit the STYSA Coaching Education Program web page.

Do you know the rules for soccer?  In general, we play under the general Laws of the Game set by FIFA.  However, as we are dealing with youth, these laws have been modified to fit the level of play for the younger players.  These modified laws grow with the younger players as they get older and have a better understanding of the game of soccer.  Please note that in all cases, the general idea of fair play is the goal of these laws.  The following is an excerpt from the 2007-2008 STYSA Handbook.   All games under the sanction of STYSA shall be played using the current FIFA Laws of the Game and the modifications as indicated in these general rules of play.  For a basic understanding of the laws, see our Simplified Rules for Parents.

Drills

This link is to a Coaching Manual that was prepared by a group of people for the use of youth coaching volunteers.  Please follow the copyright information provided within the manual.

Pill's Drills is a great source of soccer training drills for all ages.  Check back with Jeff Pill from time to time for more drills.

Equipment

All players must were shin guards during practice and the game.  Soccer cleats are recommended.  If base ball shoes are used the toe cleat must be removed.  During the game no watches or jewelry should be worn.  We encourage every child to have there own ball.  Shin guards can be purchased at Wal-Mart, academy, F and F sporting goods and other sport stores.

Field Work Days

Aug 15, 22, 29. Primarily we mark the fields and set up goals and fill in pits on the fields on this day.  Teams that have the most work hours on field work days will be able to reserve the fields for practice.  These practice schedule will be posted at the field site.

Referee Representation

All recreational U-7 teams and up must provide one referee representative for the Fall Season. A referee representative is a certified and registered referee that actively referee's games during the season. All competitive teams (Division II and S2) must provide three referee representatives, one of which must be an adult (18 and over) for the Fall season. Teams failing to provide their referee representatives will not be allowed to advance to playoffs if otherwise eligible.  The referee representative must referee 7 games during the year.  The representative can be a parent, coach, assistant coach or an existing referee.  Email OCYS if you need help with this.

 Recommended / Suggested Records

You are probably "What kind of records do I need to keep for soccer?"  Well, there are some obvious and some not so obvious records you should keep on you team.  For example, a roster is important.  You are probably thinking that you get a copy of your roster from the Club's Registrar.  However, this roster does not include information such as parent's names and emergency phone numbers.  We have put together a list of records we recommend or suggest you keep for your team.

  • Roster - Keep several copies of your official roster for official use such as for tournaments.  Also add to your roster the player's parents' names, work numbers, and emergency numbers.  Add the players' jersey numbers to the roster as most tournaments will require that information.
  • Player Cards - Every player that plays interclub games (i.e., games with teams from other clubs) must have a player card.  These cards must be signed by the Registrar and the player.  A current picture of the player/coach must be attached to the signed card and the laminated.  It is recommended that the laminated cards be kept on a ring or other binder.  Cards should be brought to all games as they may be checked for player eligibility before the game. Card will be given out at the August 25 meeting.
  • Player Applications - It is recommended that you keep the players application in a binder that you carry to practice and the games.  Important information is included on the application that may be needed.
  • Medical Releases - Medical releases must be maintained on all players to play in tournaments.  We recommend keeping these releases with you in your coaching binder.
  • Cautions and Ejections - You must keep track of the number of cautions (yellow cards) and ejections (red cards) each player receives.  A player or coach receiving a red card (ejection) must sit out the next sanctioned game.  A player or coach receiving three (3) yellow cards (cautions) must sit out the next sanctioned game.  Also, if a player or coach has excessive cautions or ejections, disciplinary action may be taken by the Club and they may be ineligible for post-season play.
  • Maps - Don't forget to keep a copy of maps of the fields where your team will be playing.
  Sports Medicine

Orange County Youth Soccer Club does not have staff doctors or medical trainers.  However, we have located some published materials from qualified medical doctors that may help you in better understanding and addressing injuries.  Please remember, you should always seek treatment from a qualified medical doctor for treatment of injuries.

The Stone Clinic Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation has a web page entitled "Common Sports Injuries in Soccer: Acute and Chronic" that has some excellent information on soccer related injuries.  http://www.stoneclinic.com/soccer/soccer_injuries.htm

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) also has some excellent information regarding soccer related injuries and ways to prevent them.
