The Orange County Baseball Umpires Association is affiliated with the New York State Baseball Umpires Association and provides certified umpires for high school baseball in Section 9, Orange County, New York.

The association also provides umpires during the summer and fall for numerous non-school teams and leagues, including American Legion and "travel" youth teams and leagues and adult baseball leagues.

PASSING OF OSCAR DIAZ, PAST PRESIDENT

November 8, 1944 - April 18, 2012Town of Plattekill, NYOscar Diaz of the Town of Plattekill, retired employee of Osram Sylvania and currently employed as a bus driver for Godeffroy Car Co./First Student entered into rest suddenly Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at St. Lukes/Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh Campus. He was 67.The son of the late Jose and Candida Echezabal Faja Diaz, he was born November 8, 1944 in Cuba.He was a member of Leptondale Bible Church, former member and past president of Orange County Umpire Association.Oscar is survived by his loving wife, Julia Marie Maduro Diaz; his sons, Peter Diaz and his wife, Agnes of Newburgh, James Diaz and his wife, Patty of New Windsor; his brothers, Fernando Diaz of Plattekill and Jose Diaz of Pearl River; grandchildren: Jaxyn Diaz, Jett Diaz, Madisen Diaz and Rilee Diaz; nieces and nephews as well as cousins.Visitation for family and friends will take place Monday April 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 7:30 p.m. at Leptondale Bible Church, 1771 Rt. 300, Newburgh. Funeral service will commence at 7:30 p.m. with Pastor Steve Betcher officiating. Burial will be private at the Wallkill Valley Cemetery in Walden.In Lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to the Leptondale Christian Academy, 1771 Rt 300, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Umpiring Timeline

1876 - William McLean, from Philadelphia, became the first professional umpire when he umpired the first game in National League history between Boston and Philadelphia on April 22.

1878 - The National League instructed home teams to pay umpires $5 per game.

A little known fact... The first testicular guard (cup) was used in baseball in 1874 and the first helmet was used in 1934. To some this proves it took 60 years for men to realize that the brain is also important.
