Questions and Answers

Q & A
 Q.  Where can I get a copy of the rules for my age group, practice or game schedules, sponsorship agreement, member conduct agreement, volunteer application, or the practice schedule?
A. Under the "Documents" tab of this site's homepage.
Q.   What are the differences in the ball sizes for the different divisions?
A.   The 6&Under and 8&Unders use a 10" R.I.F. softball. (Reduced Injury Factor).
The 10&Unders use an 11" ASA Softball.
The 12&Under divisions and above, use a regulation 12"ASA softball.

Q. Should I register my daughter in the "B" or "C" Classification of her Division, what is the difference?

A.  They will be evaluated and selected by the coaches for "b" or "c" based on their performace at the player evalations.

Q. My Daughter is 10 years old, when does she have to move up to the next age Division?

A. The cut-off date for Spring & Fall 2009 is determined by her age on December 31, 2008.  Hence,  if your daughter turns 11 yrs old on January 1st 2009, she can still play in the 10U Divisions. If your daughter turns 11 years old on December 31, 2007, (a day earlier) she must move up to the 12U Division.

Q. What fields do we practice and play games on and where are they?
A.
Majestic Park (Alexander and Hualapai)
Mountain Ridge (I-95 & Durango)
Childrens
Memorial Park (Gowan & Rainbow)
Doc Romeo Park (Cheyenne & Tenaya, Behind the Libary)
Katz Elem. School (I-95 & Lake Mead, By the "In & Out Burger)
Johnson Middle School (Alta & Buffalo)
Lied Middle School (215 Beltway & Bradley)

Q. When does the season start? How long does it last?

A. The Spring 2009 Season runs from February thru May.  Practices begin in February, games begin in March.
All games are played on well maintained fields, and are scheduled prior to the beginning of the season (so there are no surprises).

Q. What does the league provide?

A.
We provide the girls with uniforms, insurance, and ASA registration. We provide the coaches with practice fields, umpire fees, and enough bats, balls, catchers gear, & helmets to conduct their practices & games.  At the end of the season we have trophies and/or awards for all participants at no extra cost.
Q. My daughter has a helmet, but it doesn't have a face mask/guard.  Can she use it?

A.  Not until it is properly fitted with a guard.  Guards are mandatory in the 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U & 18U Divisions. We do allow our 6U & 8UC to use non-masked helmets.  The 8UB division is strongly encouraged to use the masked helmets.

Q.Does my daughter need to attend the Playday/Tryout?
A.  All girls that are not frozen to a team are REQUIRED to attend the Playday/Tryout.
Q.  What does my daughter need to bring to the Playday/Tryout?
A.  Girls should wear layered comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. They should have a water bottle.  They need to be wearing cleats; slider pants and shin guards are recommended but not mandatory. You must have your own glove.
Q.  My daughter wants to be on the same team as her friend, can we do that?
A.   If your child is in the 6&Under or 8&Under division you can request to be placed on the same team and it will be honored as long as your request is made at the time of registering.  If your daughter is on an older team, she will be drafted to a team.  You may request to "buddy "on your registration form and sometimes the coaches are able to accommodate your request. Sometimes it is not possible.
Q.   My daughter is in an older division and did not get on the team that she was hoping for.  Can she be moved to the other team.
A.   Once the draft is over and the teams are legally formed, no players will be moved to other teams within that division for any reason.
Q.  It is Sunday and we have not been contacted by a coach and practices are starting Monday. Why hasn't a coach called yet?
A.   The Draft will be held Saturday afternoon. Your coach  will pick up his/her final paperwork and equipment Sunday. Coaches usually call their players within the next couple of days. Some coaches do not start practicing until the following Saturday. If you do not receive a call by Wednesday,  you should call Sherry Foley, the Player Advocate for your coaches information. 806-3150.
Q.   Are Team sponsors required, how much is it and where does the money go?
A.   All Teams must be sponsored. (Most of the coaches already have the team's sponsor.) The sponsorship fee is $350.00 per team. This money is used to pay-off the uniforms & equipment expenses. It is also applied towards spring advertising & registration expenses.
Q.  If our team has a team sponsor do we still need to participate in the Bat-A-Thon.
A.   Yes. This is a mandatory fundraiser. It is the only fundraiser the league has and it is only done in the spring. The Bat-A-Thon is applied towards umpire fees; city field fees; field maintenance fees; Hawaiian Jamboree; trophies; administrative expenses; Allstar expenses such as tournaments/uniforms/equipment/umpires/etc; and other misc. expenses. These funds pay-off our season debts, then what's left is used to get fallball advertised.
Q.  Can you give me an idea of the game schedule?
A.   Not until after all teams are formed. The City leases fields based upon the number of registered teams. Until everyone is registered, we are not positive of how much field time we will get at each location. Thereafter, it is based upon the number of teams in each division. The division with the most teams will have games on the fields where we have the most time. The divisions with the least amount of teams will have games on the fields with the least amount of time.
Q.   Can you give me an idea of the practice schedule?
A. Not until all teams are formed.  Once the teams are formed and we receive the fields, we are required to evaluate the coaches field day/time request and compare that information with the information from the other coaches, as well as other coaches staffing multiple teams, and teams with siblings on other teams in other divisions.
Q.  How can I run for a position on the Executive Board?
A.  At the end of each spring we hold elections for various positions on the Executive Board. Candidates need to be nominated by a member in good standing one week prior to the election. Nominations are emailed to the website email address: mosiemoe@aol.comCandidates are encouraged to show that they are serious by volunteering on committees and helping with various task prior to their candidacy.  Candidates should be positive and must refrain from engaging in negative campaigning at all times.
Q. I want to be a coach. What do I need to do?
A.   In order to coach, you must be in good standing with the league. You will also need to contact Sherry Foley, our Player Advocate. Her number is 806-3150. Her email address is mosiemoe@aol.com  Let her know what division you are interested in coaching.  Also go to the handouts section of our website and complete a Volunteer Application and mail it to: NWGS  P.O. Box 34721  Las Vegas NV 89133.  Thereafter, your application will be processed thru our hired investigative services and/or Metro.  If you're "clean", you will be placed on the list.  Once the spring registrations begin and we are informed as to which coaches are returning, we will let you know if there is an opening.
Q.   If I Coach,  is my daughter automatically placed on my team and, who else can I take?
A.   If you coach a team, your daughter will count as your 1st frozen player. Beyond that, you need to review the Draft Rules located in the handout section of our website and also call Sherry Foley @ 806-3150 to have your freezes approved and verified.
Q.   Our team does not have a team sponsor but I have a sponsor for a tournament and we collected some money to purchase some cool visors. Is this allowed?
A.   Absolutely not! Each team is a part of this league and responsible to help alleviate it's debt. Any team without a sponsor that receives money for a tournament or accessories is required to turn the funds over (up to $350.00) to help cover their share of expenses. Failure to do so, or misappropriation of funds will result in suspension of the coaching staff.
Q.   My daughter did not participate in the Bat-A-Thon, but she wants to tryout for Allstars. Can I just give you $40.00 if she makes the Allstar team?
A.   In order to be eligible to try-out for Allstars, a player must have participated in the Bat-A-Thon prior to the cut-off date.
Q.   My daughter does not plan on trying out for Allstars, do we have to do the Bat-A-Thon.
A.   Yes. When you registered your daughter for the spring season, you sign an agreement wherein you agreed to participate in our mandatory fundraiser. This league relies solely on volunteers and donations to meet its expenses. None of our volunteers receive a fee for their services. 100% of the donations received are used for the expenses associated with running this league.
Q.   I cannot find the information I'm looking for on your website. Who should I contact?
A. You can email us at mosiemoe@aol.com and we will respond within 48 hours. Also, you can call any of our Board Members. Their telephone numbers are located on our website under "Board".
Q.  What is the league's history?
The "Original" Northwest Girls Softball League

The Northwest Girls Softball League orginated in 1995 and was originally sanctioned "Bobby Soxs". Its founders were Steve & Pam Sphar as well as Richard & Julie Luna.

In 1996, The Founders joined forces with its two sister leagues, Sunrise Girls Softball and Spring Valley Bobby Sox to form a Nevada sanctioning body called Southern Nevada Fastpitch Association. This new sanctioning body was governed by the three local Las Vegas leagues and played ball governed by the rules of the Amatuer Softball Association. Since the three leagues were relatively small in size, and Las Vegas Valley was also relatively small, it made sense for these Leagues to bann together under this "homegrown" association to play and interleague its teams. Together, the three Leagues pioneered the recreational softball program for the Las Vegas Valley. It wasn't long before the larger sanctioning softball organizations began to take notice.

As the Las Vegas Valley grew, (with major explosive growth in the northwest area) the Northwest Girls softball League grew to become what is know today as "The Largest Girls Softball League in Las Vegas" with its growth and success, the League was invited to join the National Softball Association where all Games are officiated by certified National Softball Association Umpires (except 8 & Under). The league uses the same rules and regulations used by most Tournament class Softball Associations. Offering 2 Classifications of play, C Ball and B Ball as well as All Stars in both classifications.   Over the years, this league has served as a catalyst for many young female athletes to play High School ball, Travel Ball and continue on to receive scholarships and play College Ball.

The "Original" Northwest Girls Softball league along with the National Softball Association continues to serve the Northwest Las Vegas community and continue to provide a rewarding softball experience to both recreational and tournament softball players in Las Vegas, Nevada. It provides an environment for softball skill and character development for the benefit of young girls in the community. This League is sponsored by many organizations in and around the Las Vegas Valley. We would like to thank those organizations and individuals.
