This section aims to answer the most frequently asked questions about playing with North Redondo Little League.  If your question is not answered here, please get in touch with us using the contact information at the end of this page.  Thank you for your interest in NRLL!

What is NRLL?

North Redondo Little League (NRLL) is based in Redondo Beach, California, and is a non-profit youth sports organization that is run entirely by volunteers.  NRLL has provided kids the opportunity to participate in our National Little League Baseball and Softball programs since 1953.  We are affiliated with Little League International of Williamsport, Pennsylvania.  Our home field is Anderson Park on Vail Ave, Redondo Beach.

Who can join?

NRLL is open to boys and girls whose “league age” is 5 through 14.  The baseball divisions are aimed at both boys and girls, who may play on same-sex or co-ed teams depending on the numbers of players available, and the softball divisions are aimed at girls.  Please check the Divisions page to see which divisions are currently open to players.

To calculate your child’s “league age”, please use Little League International's League Age Calculator.

Where are the NRLL boundaries?

Baseball Players should reside in the area of North Redondo Beach (zip code: 90278) bounded by:

  • Manhattan Beach Blvd to the north
  • Inglewood Ave to the east
  • Artesia Blvd to the south
  • Aviation Blvd to the west

(Please see the accompanying boundary map).  If you do not reside in this area, please check the Links page for links to other nearby Little Leagues. Exception for Softball players - see below.

Is the Softball Program only for girls within the NRLL boundaries ?

No.  Softball is available to all girls living in Redondo Beach since Central Redondo and South Redondo Little Leagues do not have Softball programs.

When are the playing seasons?

The main playing season is in Spring, usually running from early March to late May.  The opening ceremony for the Spring season usually takes place on the first Saturday in March at Anderson Park and includes a mini-carnival and team photographs.  The closing ceremony for the Spring season usually takes place on the first Saturday in June, also at Anderson Park.   Players are presented with a trophy and yearbook and afterwards, teams hold a potluck picnic.

Offseason play is also available in the Summer and Fall.  It is offered to players who registered and played in NRLL the previous Spring season.  Summer Ball games take place between mid-July and August, with 2 games per week.  Fall Ball games take place between September and November with one game each weekend.  Offseason is usually in the form of co-play with teams from other local Little Leagues and is highly recommended to help a child continue to develop and improve his/her play.

How do I register my child?

Registration usually takes place in November-January for the Spring season, June-July for Summer Ball, and August-September for the Fall Ball.  You may register in person or online.  Please watch the NRLL News page for details about registration procedures, fees, dates and locations.  Or, watch out for flyers sent home from your child’s school (Lincoln or Madison Elementary Schools only) and banners placed around Anderson Park.  Registration forms will be available for download from our Handouts section.  If you have questions about registration, please contact us at northredondolittleleague@yahoo.com.

Please note that new players will be asked to provide a copy of their birth certificate and proof of residence within the NRLL boundaries (e.g. utility bills) before being allowed to play.  These may be brought to any of our public registration sessions.

What is the Snack Bar deposit required at Registration?

The Snack Bar deposit is typical in the local little leagues in this area, requiring a parent to commit and work Snack Bar shifts before having your check returned (it is not cashed unless you do not work your shifts).  In the case of an Online registrant, your credit card will be charged the deposit along with the registration fee at the time you sign-up, so the league will write you a check after you complete your Snack Bar shifts.  You will need to provide 1 deposit check per child registering.  The Snack Bar shifts are scheduled by Team and the shifts will be coordinated by the Team Parent.

Which division should I sign up my child for?

Players are selected for teams based on their age and/or experience.  Please check the Divisions page for details of the age bands.  If, after the first few practices, it becomes apparent that your child is not playing at the same level as his/her teammates, you may wish to discuss this with your team manager, Division Commissioner and the Player Agent to see if another division may be more appropriate.

Can my child play on the same team as their friend?

You may submit “buddy requests” at registration time.  We will try to honor requests in the younger non-Draft divisions (i.e., T-Ball, Farm/A-level, Softball 6U), but cannot make any guarantees.  For older divisions (i.e., Baseball AA and above, Softball 8U and above), requests are difficult to honor simply because our goal in team forming is to have balance among the teams in these competitive divisions.

Does my child need to “try out”?

Players who are league age 8 or older need to try out so that we can evaluate their current performance and balance the teams.  Younger players wishing to "play-up" (i.e. play in a division with older players) should also attend for assessment.  Tryouts are usually held in January for the Spring season and August for the Fall season.  Please watch the NRLL News page for details of dates and locations.

What if my child doesn’t like playing after all?

If, after the first few practices, your child no longer wishes to play, you may request a partial refund from the NRLL Treasurer.  We regret that we are not able to offer refunds once the season has started.

How often do teams practice?

Practices are held at Anderson Park and vary from team to team and division to division.  Practices usually begin about 3-4 weeks before the season opens.  They are usually held once per week for about an hour in the T-ball and Farm divisions and once or twice per week for 1-1½ hours for the older divisions.  This may include practices held prior to games.  The practice schedule may alter once the season starts.

How often do teams play?

Expect to play 1-2 games per week overall – usually one midweek in the evening and one on the weekend during the day (schedule permitting).  During the Spring season, more games will be scheduled after Spring Break to take advantage of longer daylight hours.  A game schedule will be issued before the season starts.  (See Schedules page.)

Where do teams play?

Games are usually held at Anderson Park, especially in the case of the younger divisions.  Older divisions may co-play with teams from other leagues at local fields in the South Bay area.

What uniform/equipment does my child need?

We provide your child with a team jersey (which must be returned at the end of the season - except for T-Ball which gets to keep their Team jerseys) and a hat and socks (which they may keep).  You need to provide an undershirt and pants in your team’s colors (your team manager or coach will notify you about these), a glove and a pair of baseball (or soccer) cleats.  A protective cup is also recommended for boys (this is REQUIRED for the Minor/Major divisions).

You may also wish to consider purchasing a matching belt (in your team’s color), batting gloves and warm undergarments for your child.  Bats and helmets are provided.

Failure to return the team jersey by the end of the season in the condition in which it was received (subject to normal wear and tear) will result in a $30 fine.  Teams whose uniforms are not returned before the start of the closing day ceremonies without prior consent of the equipment manager will not receive their trophies at the ceremony.   The money saved by returning uniforms goes toward supporting the league and keeping registration fees down.  Your support is essential.

How can I volunteer to help out NRLL?

We’re so glad you asked because this league is run entirely by volunteers and all help is greatly appreciated!!  Please contact any NRLL board member or email northredondolittleleague@yahoo.com to offer your services.  There are many roles available – you can be a manager, coach, assistant coach or team parent for your child’s team or you can take a position on or in support of the NRLL Board.  For full details about board and officer responsibilities, please check out the Handouts section.

How can I sponsor NRLL?

Again, we’re so glad you asked – all donations are very gratefully received!  There are many costs associated with this type of program - such as insurance, charter fees, uniforms, equipment, field maintenance and lights – so we need support from parents and local businesses to keep our expenses at a minimum and to keep our league going strong.  You can make a donation online by clicking on the Donate Now link or you can download the Sponsorship form from our Handouts section.  All contributions are tax-deductible.  If you have any questions about sponsorship and benefits, please contact us at northredondolittleleague@yahoo.com.

How can I get in touch with NRLL?

Our league email address is northredondolittleleague@yahoo.com.  There is also a voicemail box at 310-214-6954 where you can leave messages – this box is checked regularly.  Alternatively, please check the NRLL Board page for email addresses of individual board members, where available.
