North Babylon Athletic Club: Lacrosse: NBAC Information: A Little North Babylon Lacrosse History

A Little North Babylon Lacrosse History

A little history lesson on NBAC Lacrosse...

North Babylon Athletic Club Lacrosse was started in 1995, by Jim Ritchie with the support of North Babylon Athletic Club and, of course, his wife, Angela. At that time, Lacrosse did not exist in North Babylon. Lacrosse was in all of the towns surrounding North Babylon but not here.

Jim loves Lacrosse, and he wanted it available to his children and yours! Boys and Girls not one or the other but BOTH!

The Ritchie’s were advised by the school district, that Lacrosse would be a possibility in the schools only if a sufficient need and a “feeder” league could support the sport in our town. Then the school district would bring both girls and boys lacrosse into their Athletic Program as a sport not a club. Jim approached the board of the North Babylon Athletic Club (NBAC) and Lacrosse started in NB at the youth league level in 1996 with 17 players.

Finally, after much hard work on Angela's & Jim's part the reality of school lacrosse was here. In the year 2000, with the help and support of Jeff Cordell(NBSD Athletic Director) and the NBSD Board – and the NBAC players parents and coaches, the Ritchie's hard work paid off! NBSD brought Lacrosse in as a “sport” in our schools, see the links page for Section XI Suffolk County – there’s the proof. They started with the Middle School teams the first year, then JV teams in 2001. 2002 started the first Varsity Teams in North Babylon.

Jim and his family worked many years to build the NBAC Lacrosse Program. In 1995, Lacrosse began with 17 players in North Babylon second through sixth grade. Now, Lacrosse boasts in excess of 600 players in North Babylon from Kindergarten to 12th grade! Many players started with Jim and NBAC Lacrosse.

Mike Fifield took over the reins of the NBAC Lacrosse program in 2001. Mike worked with Jim since 1995 and throughout the years to help build the program and continues in the traditions started by Jim. Mike brings with him over 30 years of experience in Lacrosse, he played lacrosse at Massapequa High School and SUNY Cortland, as well as Adult Club Lacrosse. One of the highlights of his lacrosse career was winning the NCAA Division II Championship in 1975. Mike looks forward to teaching new generations this great sport!

Mike Fifield turned over the reins of NBAC Lacrosse to Steve Walsh in June 2007.  Steve started his larosse career in High School under the reknowned Jack Kailey and hasn't stopped playing since then.  Steve played in many of the Long Island Leagues as well appearing at Vail, the World Cup in Canada and Lake Placid.  His knowledge of the game comes from experience as an attacker, midfielder, defender and currently a D-middie.  Steve has been a coach for NBAC Lacrosse since 2001, he became the Boys Director in 2005/2006 and looks forward to tching the youth of North Babylon about the great game of Lacrosse.

Thanks Jim & Angela!
