Don't I just get a "tax exempt number"?
Actually there is no such thing as a "tax exempt number". I know people say that term but it is a big misunderstanding!

Your group is assigned an identification number by your state and/or the IRS. Think of it as nothing more than a social security number for an individual. That number in and of itself doesn't mean you have qualified for any type of tax status.

How did this mis-labeling of a number come about? There is a Certificate for Resale that can be issued to a merchant so that no sales tax is due on a purchase. This Certificate has a space for your state ID number which is in reality the sales tax account number with the state. Merchants are asking for this number for their files when they ask for your "tax exempt number". This question only has to do with SALES TAXES and has nothing to do with being a Non Profit exempt from INCOME TAXES with the IRS.
