Honoring Jack Daly on Opening Day - Saturday April 12th at 10AM

For over 60 years, the Newtown Edgmont Little League has played on the same fields on Bishop Hollow Road in Newtown Square. Currently, hundreds of kids and over 20 teams play on the complex’s six fields and in their fairly new indoor facility.

On April 12, this cornerstone of childhood athletics in Newtown and Edgmont townships will be officially renamed in honor of a man who has made a lasting impression on thousands of kids over the decades: Jack Daly.

The Jack Daly Baseball Complex- Home of Newtown-Edgmont Little League will commemorate the man who gave 50 years of service to the ever blossoming little league program before his passing last April. Among his many endeavors with the league, Daly managed the 1967 11- and 12-year-old team to the Little League World Series.

“He’s being honored not for going to the WS but for his involvement with (the league),” said Joe Catania, a former player of Daly’s and league board of director.

According to Catania, the idea to rename the complex was presented to the NELL board of directors last year, which is also funding a memorial for Daly that is being constructed by the snack bar.

In addition to leading the 1967 team to the Eastern Regional title and a trip to the Little League World Series, Daly has been involved in various capacities with the league over the decades. When he wasn’t coaching he was umpiring games, maintaining the grounds, and even serving on the board well into his ‘80s.

Daly was also one of the initial inductees to the league’s hall of honor in 1986.

Catania was one of the team members who won the 1967 Eastern Regional title in Connecticut that qualified the team for the Little League World Series under Daly’s management, noting the NELL legend was “very disciplined” but had a good sense of humor.

“I didn’t experience his sense of humor until I got older,” said Catania, who was 12 years old during the famous 1967 season. “We never need to not laugh about something. He could criticize any player by making it a joke and hilarious.”

There was no joking around by Catania on Daly’s longstanding efforts to make the league what it is today, culminating to the complex renaming and memorial which would seem like an embarrassment of riches for the “humble” icon.

“Jack would not have wanted this to happen while he was alive… he was so humble.” said Catania.

The Jack Daly Baseball Complex- Home of Newtown-Edgmont Little League name dedication ceremony starts at 10 a.m.
