Monday, June 22 History of Field Hockey at Newport Harbor The History of Field Hockey at Newport Harbor High School There wasn't much in the way of Girls sports at Newport Harbor High School until the 1960's and early 1970's. Any girls sports that existed were governed by GAA (Girls Athletic Association) through and including the 1985/1986 school year. Fall 1973 was the first season for Field Hockey at Newport Harbor. There was only one team. They were only able to play one game against Estancia as all the rest were rained out. Newport was part of the Beach Cities League. 1974 also had only one team. They were league champs and undefeated. They played 2 games in CIF playoffs winning the first and losing the second. 1975 was the first year to have two teams with the varsity having a rceord of 4 - 1 - 1 in league and 2 - 1 in CIF playoffs. Shorts and turtlenecks were the uniform of the day. 1976 saw the new uniform that has stayed the same up until and including the 2008 season: blue plaid pleated skirts and sleeveless or short-sleeved white shirts. The goalie gear has also changed dramatically since the beginning. Up until at least the 1987 season, the goalie had small, thinly padded leg guards and a helmet. Not like today with chest protectors, neck protectors, helmets, big gloves, very thick and wide leg guards, booties, girdles, and mouth guards. From 1986 through 1994 there was only one field hockey team. F/S teams were around for the 1999 and 200 seasons and from the 2002 season until and including the 2008 season. Ellen Caricof (who was also the head of Girls PE) was the first coach for Newport. She had that position for 7 years. The next 26 years would see 8 or 9 more coaches at the helm for field hockey. Some years the coaches had assistants but other years they did not. There were also JV and F/S coaches as they were needed. The varsity teams and many of the JV teams have always done very well. The varsity team has gone to CIF palyoffs at least 12 times in the school's history. The 2000 varisty team were Sunset League champions and won the OC Invitational for the first time that year. Several of Newport's field hockey players went on to play in college: Piper Archibald '95, UC Davis; Jillianne Whitfield '04, U of Michigan; Ciara Lawrence '05, Becker College in MA; Sasha Grumman '06, Kenyon College in OH; and Jessica Pizarek '07, Cal State Berkeley. Several of Newport's former players have come back to be coaches for one or more of Newport's field hockey teams. They include: Sharon Wolfe '74, Piper Archibald '95, Jessica (Jacobi) Ludwig '95 or '96, Megan Jordan '99, Piper Phillips '01 (2000 varsity player and 2000 F/S coach), Kim Erickson '01, Amanda Wittman '04, Kerri Gates '04, Jennifer Taylor '05, Ashley Gleason '05, Ally Ramser '05, Annabelle Storch '06, and Clea O'Kieffe '06.
