2007 SPRING SEASON UPDATE- BEFL

THE STARS PROUDLY CLINCHED A BEFL PLAYOFF SPOT TODAY. THE STARS ENDED THE REGULAR SEASON WITH A LAST MINUTE LOSS TO THE PIRATES. THE FINAL SCORE WAS 35-28. THE STARS PLAYED A TOUGH GAME AGAINST THE DEFENDING CHAMPS AND CAME CLOSE TO THE WIN, BUT AS THEY SAY, NOT CLOSE ENOUGH.
THE STARS HAD THE BALL WITH THE GAME TIED WITH A MINUTE LEFT WHEN THE SNAP WENT OVER MONACO'S HEAD ON 4TH AND LONG. HULL THEN GOT THE BALL AND SCORED TO SNEAK OUT A WIN.

THE STARS CLINCED A PLAYOFF SPOT EVEN WITH THE LOSS AND ARE LOOKING TO MAKE SOME NOISE IN THE BEFL PLAYOFFS.

"IF YOU'RE GONNA LOSE, IT MIGHT AS WELL BE TODAY. THE STARS MADE IT TO THE PLAYOFFS AND WE'LL BE READY NEXT WEEK!"
"WE TOOK THE DEFENDING CHAMPS TO THE WIRE, NOT BAD." TEAM REP JOE M SAID

TO JOIN THE CLUB FOR NEXT SEASON - CALL 781-504-3644. THE NE STARS RAISED THE BAR IN 1997 AND ARE STILL DOING IT TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOW

THIS JUST IN - THE STARS HAD A THRILLER FOR THE AGES AGAINST THE TOUGH ALLSTON ARMY ON SUNDAY. MONACO PICKED OFF A PASS AT THE GOAL LINE AND TOOK IT TOTHE HOUSE ON ALLSTON'S FIRST DRIVE TO MAKE IT 6-0. WITH A SHORTHANDED STARS SQUAD, THE GAME WAS STARTING TO GO ALLSTON'S WAY. THESE 2 TEAMS ALWAYS PLAY NAILBITERS, BUT ALLSTON HAD THE BIG DRIVE AND SCORD TO TAKE A 1 PIONT LEAD WITH 49 SECONDS LEFT. THE EXTRA POINT MADE IT A 2 POINT GAME. MONACO TOLD HIS TEAM 49 SECONDS WAS ENOUGH TIME AND ON THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME HE HIT WR MCCARTHY WITH A PLAY THAT THE FANS ON THE SIDELINES WERE CALLING "THE CATCH".

"BOBBY FROM ALLSTON SAID AFTER THE GAME THAT MONACO CALLED IT. WHEN WE SPOKE ON FRIDAY HE TOLD ME THE GAME WOULD BE DECIDED ON THE LAST PLAY OF THE GAME AND IT WAS - HOW FREAKY IS THAT"

THE STARS ARE NOW IN SECOND PLACE(3-1) AND ARE TRYING TO ESTABLISH A CHAMPIONSHIP RUN. THIS SUNDAY'S GAME IS AGAINST A YOUNG AND FORMITABLE WEYMOUTH DOLPHIN TEAM THAT IS HANGIN JUST FINE IN THE BEFL. FOR A FIRST YEAR TEAM, WEYMOUTH IS SCARY.

2003 CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER
The New England Stars are Champions!

The New England Stars (10-1 overall) capped one of the most breath-taking runs in the history of semi-pro football, by once again coming from behind to topple the seemingly invincible Connecticut Thunder for the AA Championship of the New England Football League. In a season that began with these Stars breaking a scoreless tie with a dramatic overtime TD bomb to christen their new home in Winthrop, this incredibly resourceful team has reeled off 9 consecutive wins, including 5 late in the game, come-from-behind victories. Their trademark resilience has made them one of the elite AA squads in the nation, having won 15 of their last 16 regular season games, and 18 of their last 20 overall – they simply refuse to lose.

As always the Thunder came in well-prepared, but this time they had the motivation of trying to avenge the only loss in the team’s history (to the Stars on Sept. 6). The Conn. Defense laid siege to the Stars backfield for much of the first half, forcing tough QB Mike Erardi to fight off defenders, battling to move the chains while keeping the ball out of enemy hands. The powerful Connecticut offense also came out smoking, and after a breakaway run with a penalty tacked on the end, Steve Callendar scampered 12 yards for a Thunder TD. The Stars blocked the conversion but trailed 6-0. As the first half drew to a close, the tide turned when Stars CB Ronnie Spears picked off a pass, weaving through traffic for what appeared to be a dazzling 50 yard touchdown. However, a flag brought the ball all the way back to mid-field. A fired up Stars O-line and backfield led a punishing drive down to the 5 yd line, where Nick Priest put them on the board with a field goal in the closing seconds of the half, behind 6-3.

In the second half, though the renowned Stars defense contained them most of the day, the explosive Thunder offense created another breakaway run, using the world class speed of RB Chris Richardson. Once down close, Richardson lined up on the wing and took a deceptive reverse 11 yards for a TD before anyone realized where the ball was. The Stars regrouped to thwart the 2 point conversion attempt, but now trailed 12-3 late in the third quarter. With the situation becoming increasingly urgent, New England opened up their passing attack led by the late-arriving QB Ernie Breen. Breen, a master of the late-game rally, showed up with a hot hand, repeatedly firing strikes downfield to the acrobatic Tony Rovinelli, while his O-line battled tooth and nail to hold off the Connecticut rush. Finally down to the Connecticut 30, Breen retreated from the fierce pass rush, only to slip a perfectly executed screen pass to RB Kevin Corner in the open field. As the only nearby defender closed in, WR Rovinelli swooped in from out of nowhere to clean his clock, and Corner was off to the races for a touchdown. The conversion failed and the Stars still trailed 12-9 in the fourth quarter – however, anyone who has followed this team knows that the fourth quarter belongs to the Stars.

The Thunder tried to close it out with 5:30 remaining on a fourth down reverse play in the red zone, but Stars veteran Derek Cooke made a dramatic solo stop in the open field to get the ball back for New England. Breen went back to work, dissecting the Connecticut defense, finally completing a daring fourth down 30 yard strike to Rovinelli, only to see him stripped of the ball inside the Connecticut 15 yard line with 3:30 remaining to play. Needing only to make one first down to secure the win, the league-leading Thunder offense matched strength, speed, and determination with the league-leading Stars defense, and when the dust settled they were held inches short. With Connecticut forced to punt, the Stars put on an all-out rush for the block, sending kick blocking specialist Masio Dotson at full speed. The rest unfolded as if in slow-motion: a high snap escaped the grasp of the Connecticut punter and bounded into the endzone – the punter desperately raced Dotson for the ball in the muddy endzone with the championship hanging in the balance – the nimble Dotson launched himself, horizontally, snatching the ball cleanly for a Stars touchdown, as the New England bench exploded in a frenzy of celebration - Final score: Stars 16 - Thunder 12. True to their nature, the Stars used all phases of the game, uncanny resourcefulness, and an amazing ability to perform in the clutch to beat a powerhouse opponent with a championship on the line. This storybook ending to a storybook season is what semi-pro football is all about. It is also what being a champion is all about.

We have been contacted by another Arena football team (LAS VEGAS GLADIATORS) asking us for new talent for 2004. Anybody who wishes to tryout for them and many AF2 teams should let me know.
As you might know, The N.E. Stars held an Arena combine for The Mohegan Wolves at the conclusion of the 2001 season. This combine was the first of it's kind from a Minor League football team. It was very successful and led to an NEFL PLAYER BEING SIGNED TO A CONTRACT.
The Stars have led the way for these and many other events including 2 NEFL ALL - STAR GAMES, 2 NEFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, HOSTING A FASCO NATIONAL ALL-STAR GAME, AND AN 8 TEAM NEFL JAMBOREE IN 2001. WE ALSO ORIGINATED THE NEFL KICKOFF CLASSIC AND HOSTED 2 OF THEM( WO NELLY)

THE HISTORY OF THE N.E. STARS

THE NEW ENGLAND STARS HAVE ARRIVED! IN 2001, THE NEFL NAMED THE STARS AS THE LEAGUE'S COLONIAL CONFERENCE ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR - AND THE TEAM HAS CONTINUED TO BUILD ITS TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE.   SINCE THE TEAM'S BIRTH IN 1997, THE STARS HAVE EVOLVED FROM A STRUGGLING EXPANSION TEAM INTO ONE OF THE LEAGUE'S PREMIER FRANCHISES.   IN THEIR AMAZING 2002 SEASON, THE STARS MADE THEIR THIRD CONSECUTIVE APPEARANCE IN THE PLAYOFFS, AND FIRST EVER APPEARANCE IN THE NEFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.   ALONG THE WAY, THE TEAM RAN UP AN 8-GAME WINNING STREAK, INCLUDING AN INCREDIBLE 6 WINS BY SHUTOUT. IN 2003, THE STARS REACHED EVEN GREATER HEIGHTS, WINNING THE FINAL 9 GAMES IN A ROW, AND THE AA NEFL AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP CROWNS AS WELL. THE TEAM HAS WON 18 OF 20 REGULAR SEASON GAMES, AND HAS GAINED NATIONAL NOTORIETY.

IN SOME WAYS, THE RISE OF THE STARS HAS MIRRORED THE RISE TO PROMINENCE OF THE NEW ENGLAND FOOTBALL LEAGUE.   LIKE THE LEAGUE ITSELF, THE STARS WERE FOUNDED WITH A VISION OF "A BETTER GAME".   AS A PLAYER IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE NEFL, JOE MONACO SAW TEAMS PLAYING ON UNMARKED FIELDS, AND TAKING UP COLLECTIONS TO PAY THE REFEREES, AND BECAME DETERMINED TO CREATE A FIRST CLASS ORGANIZATION.   STARTING AS AN EXPANSION TEAM KNOWN AS THE SOUTH SHORE STARS, MONACO TACKLED THE ISSUES OF TEAM OWNERSHIP: RECRUITING, PRACTICE AND GAME FACILITIES, UNIFORMS, SPONSORSHIP, ETC. - ALL WHILE DOUBLING AS A PLAYER.   AT THE TIME, THE "ORGANIZATION" CONSISTED OF JOE AND FELLOW PLAYER ANTHONY MORGANTE, WHO IS NOW THE PRESIDENT AND HEAD COACH.   AS THE NEW TEAM ENDURED THROUGH THE DIFFICULT EARLY SEASONS, IT DEVELOPED ITS TRADEMARK TRAITS: DOG-LIKE TENACITY AND TOUGHNESS.

FINALLY, THE TEAM'S DETERMINATION TO CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE PAID OFF.   THE STARS RELOCATED TO AN EXCELLENT FACILITY IN EAST BOSTON STADIUM, AND BECAME KNOWN AS THE NEW ENGLAND STARS.   THE TEAM GRADUALLY ADDED TALENT TO BOTH ITS ROSTER AND COACHING STAFF.   ON THE FIELD, THE TEAM'S INCREASINGLY DEVELOPED ORGANIZATION STARTED PRODUCING WINS.   IN 2001, THE STARS WINNING WAYS BEGAN TO GENERATE NATIONAL RECOGNITION IN THE RANKINGS IN MINOR LEAGUE FOOTBALL NEWS.   IN 2002, THE STARS WERE ONE OF THE TOP 5 AA TEAMS IN THE EASTERN U.S., AND BROKE INTO THE TOP 50 TEAMS IN THE NATION IN ALL CLASSES.   TRUE TO FORM, THE STARS REACHED A NEW LEVEL IN 2003, WINNING THE AA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP AND BEING RANKED IN THE TOP 25 IN ALL CLASSES.

THE AWARD WINNING COACHING STAFF IS THE MOST SEASONED AND COMPLETE IN TEAM HISTORY.   NEWLY RECRUITED TALENT HAS BEEN ADDED TO A HARD-NOSED CORPS OF VETERAN PLAYERS WHO BATTLED THEIR WAY TO A CHAMPIONSHIP. REMARKABLY, IN EVERY STATISTICAL CATEGORY, EACH SEASON IN STARS HISTORY HAS BEEN STRONGER THAN THE ONE BEFORE - AND THIS ONE PROMISES TO BE THE MOST EXCITING YET.   GO STARS!
