Nease Stung by Hornets

The Nease Panthers were eliminated from post season play by the Bishop Moore Hornets in a tight 1-0 match.

The Hornets got their only goal barely 40 seconds into the match when they were awarded a questionable free kick from about 22 yards out that they were able to convert.

The intensity that Bishop Moore came out with faded after about the first 10 minutes. After that Nease took control of the play but despite many good looks at the goal just were not able to convert. The score remained 1-0 at halftime. Nease picked up the intensity in the second half especially in the last 20 minutes and several times it looked like they were going to break through only to be turned away. Despite the effort, the clock ran out on the game and on the season. Bishop Moore 1, Nease 0.

Despite the loss and the sadness we feel now about not moving on there were many many happy moments throughout this season. Nease ended the season with an amazing record of 22 wins, only 2 losses and 4 ties. In 27 games they scored an even 100 goals gave up only 20 for a winning percentage of .786. 13 of the wins were by shutout.

They finished second in the Michelle Akers Tournament and they dominated area foes as they always have defeating St. Johns Country Day, Episcopal, Flagler, Bartram Trail, St. Augustine 3 times and Fleming Island winning the St. Johns River Conference Championship for the 3rd year in a row.

Thanks for a GREAT season!

Nease Defeats Lecanto to Advance

The Panthers took on the visiting Lecanto Panthers in a Regional Quarterfinal match last night. Nease came out on top 3-0 and will advance to play Bishop Moore Tuesday 1/30 at Bishop Moore at 7:00 p.m.

Kristen Hoover got things going for Nease at the 34:17 mark of the second half after a scoreless first half. Hoover received a cross in from the left side from Lisa Heise and netted it putting Nease up 1-0. At the 11:09 mark, Meagan Thomas hit a direct kick from about 30 yards out that went over the Lecanto keepers head and into the net putting Nease up 2-0. Ashley Nicol iced the game for Nease picking up an insurance goal just a minute later assisted by Heise.

Nease Defeats Jackets 3-1, Are Champions of District 4A-5

This was a game that has been anticipated all season long.
For these many reasons....
>Nease is the 2 time defending 4A State Champions.
>St. Augustine's team has consistently improved over the last few years and has some young talent beyond all-county Laura Ray.
>The Yellow Jackets went deeper into the post season last year then any Jacket team in recent memory.
>Most consider St. Augustine to be Nease's only real challenger for the district crown.
>The season games have both been closely contested 2-1 affairs.

The stage was set for a classic battle of the hungry, long-frustrated challenger and game-hardened champion.

The Panther's came out of the gate in this game more fired up than perhaps any game thus far this season. They were making runs, their passes were crisp and they were on the attack. Kasey Eckstein connected for Nease's first goal barely 4 minutes into the game and from the looks of things on the field there would be more of the same coming very soon.

Over the next 15 minutes, despite Nease having 4 or 5 great looks at goal, the Panther's still hadn't broken through. Twenty minutes in, there was the water break and St. Aug was still only trailing 1-0 after being clearly dominated in the game. Nease was frustrated and as often happens, this gave the Yellow Jackets an opening. At the 10:50 mark of the first half they capitalized as the Jackets got a through ball to freshman forward Lauren Hopfensberger who took it straight down the middle of the field all the way to goal to even the score. The halftime score was 1-1.

It was the Jackets that came out quickly in the second half, at least for the first few minutes. They had a couple of very good chances that the Nease defense and goalie Katherine O'Donnell turned aside. Then the tide began to turn in favor of the Panthers. It was Lisa Heise that finally broke through at the 29:10 mark for Nease, beating the Jacket defenders off of a opportunity created by Kristen Hoover. It stayed 2-1 until about the 5 minute mark when Heise again found the back of the net from outside after a pass from Sam Snyder. Nease held the Yellow Jackets the rest of the way winning the game and the district by a score of 3-1.

Nease moves on to Regional play and will take on the runner-up in District 6, Lecanto (19-5), next Thursday at home. The Jackets travel and play the District 6 winner, Belleview (24-1).

Nease Grounds Falcons

The Panthers kicked off the 2006-2007 post-season in high gear with an easy 8-0 district semi-final win over the Pedro Menendez Falcons.

It took about 10 minutes before Nease got on the board but they poured in 4 goals in quick succession to ice the game early.

Stacey Hanburry lead the Nease assault with 4 individual goals including the first and second Panther goals of the night. She scored her first as Kristen Hoover dribbled past a couple of Falcon defenders in from the left side then along the end line and dished it off to Hanburry who flicked it into the goal. Minutes later Hanburry got her second assisted by Lisa Heise making it 2-0 Nease. Hoover made it 3-0 Nease as she again dribbled past the Falcon defense this time taking it into goal herself. Sam Snyder put Nease on top 4-0 when Macie Soler-Sala sent a pass into the top of the 6 yard box from the right side and Snyder buried it in the goal. Lisa Heise picked up goal number 5 for the Panthers with Hanburry assisting with a timely pass. The halftime score was Nease 5, Menendez 0.

Barely 5 minutes into half number 2, Hanburry and Heise combined again with Hanburry getting her 3rd goal making it 6-0 Nease. Heise combined with Hanburry again as Hanburry's picked up her 4th goal and Nease's 7th just 5 minutes later. Kasey Eckstein finished off the Falcons as she picked up Nease's 8th off a direct kick just outside the 18 ending the game with the mercy rule.

Final score Nease 8, Menendez 0.

The Panthers take on the winner of the St. Augustine, Clay game this Friday at 7:00 p.m. in St. Augustine. The winner of that game is the district champion.

With tonight's win, Nease is guaranteed a spot in the post season bracket as the district winner and runner up both advance to the Regional pool of teams. Nease has advanced out of the district for 9 consecutive years.

Nease Captures Third Consecutive Conference Crown

The Nease Panthers were 3-2 winners tonight over the Golden Eagles of Fleming Island capturing their third consecutive St. John's River Conference Championship.

Kristen Hoover was on fire early scoring her first barely a minute and a half into the match as she dribbled around the left defender and ripped a shot past the keeper into the back of the net. Hoover picked up number 2 for the Panthers at the 18:42 mark when Lisa Heise fed her a pass into the box from the left and again she juked her way around the Fleming defenders and went to goal for the score. The score was 2-0 going into halftime.

Kasey Eckstein added to Nease's lead when she dribbled the ball down the right wing, then cut in angling towards the 18 yard box. Just outside the 18 she launched a long perfectly placed shot into the upper 90 over the keepers head. The Panthers were up 3-0.

Fleming Island made the final 15 minutes most exciting indeed. They scored their first goal at the 14:14 mark off a penalty kick. They added another at the 8:37 mark off a corner kick. Emily Whidby made a diving stop to save a sure goal on a Fleming breakaway and another Fleming chance glanced off the back post with about a minute to go.

Final score Nease 3, Fleming Island 2.

Districts begin next week. The Panthers will play the winner of next Tuesday's Pedro Menendez, Palatka game next Wednesday in St. Augustine.
