The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua wrestling team ended its season with an awards presentation. Awards were given out in two age groups: kindergarten-thrird grade program and the fourth-sixth grade program. The following wrestlers won awards in the K through third grade group: Dante Young (rookie of the year, K), Alex White (most improved, 2nd) and Ryan Jigarjian (outstanding wrestler, 2nd). The following wrestlers won award in the fourth through sixth grade group: Jake Redmond (rookie of the year, 5th), Cam Bennet (most improved, 5th) and Ryan Rice (outstanding wrestler, 4th). Rice had a program-high 30 wins this season and won 10 tournament titles, including the Elementary School State Championship. Jigarjian was second with eight tournmanet titles. Bennett was first at the Nashua City Middle School Championship and he and Redmond will move on the the Elm St. Middle School team next year. Keenan Mills and Bennett received 20-win club awards, Kevin Melanson and Jigarjian received 25-win club awards and Rice got the 30-win club award.
BGCGN wrestlers honored Published: Thursday, Apr. 12, 2007 The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua wrestling team presented its annual awards on Saturday. Coach Kris Rowlette and BGCGN athletic director Patrick Gill were on hand to announce the recipients.
MOST IMPROVED
Fourth grader Chance Robinson received the Most Improved Wreslter award for the fourth-grade-and-under team. Robinson finished the season at 22-3 with a team-leading 16 pins, winning both the New Hampshire Elementary School state championship and the Big East Gold championship at 80 pounds. On the fifth-grade-and-over squad, fifth grader Dan Breese won most improved honors. Breese won the Concord Regional title at 105 pounds, but a snowboarding accident left him with a broken arm, unable to compete in the state middle school finals.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Hudson’s Brandon Levesque was the fourth-grade-and-under Rookie of the Year, posing an impressive 20-4 record (13 pins) on his way to winning the New Hampshire Elementary School state championship in the 90-pound class. The fifth-grade-and-over Rookie of the Year was fellow Hudson resident Adam Garside, a 90-pound sixth grader.
OUTSTANDING WRESTLER
Fifty-seven-pound fourth grader Kevin Melanson was the fourth-grade-and-under squad’s Outstanding Wrestler. Melanson’s team-leading 28 victories, with 16 pins and only three losses helped him win six tournaments over the season, including the New Hampshire Elementary School state championship at 57 pounds. On the fifth-grade-and-over team, fifth grader Marcel Laplante was named Outstanding Wrestler based on his 27-3 record (11 pins). Laplante won the New Hampshire Middle School state championship in the 75-pound weight class, and his first place finshes at seven tourneys led the team.
20-WIN CLUB
Awards for the 20 Win Club were presented to Robinson, third grader Ryan Rice, Levesque and Connor McBride, a Charlotte Avenue School fifth grader who won the City Middle School championship at 80 pounds by defeating the state champion at that weight class in the tournament finals.
25-WIN CLUB
25 Win Club awards were given to fifth grader Travis Rice, Melanson and Laplante.
COACHES AWARD
The Coaches Award, presented annually to the wrestler best demonstrating commitment, dedication and leadership by example, was awarded to fourth grader Jake Valeri, the New Hampshire Elementary School state champion at 55 pounds.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Each year, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua is dependent on volunteers to help support the staff with the success of many of our programs. As a result, we have more than 175 volunteers who are active in Club programs, each year. They are parents, community leaders, and professionals from organizations and companies throughout our community, and they help to make a tremendous impact on the lives of our Club members every day.
