Defensively, Tommy Larson made two excellent outfield plays, and Matty Lynch threw out a runner at first base with a heads up play from the catcher’s spot. Brandywine was lead by a great pitching performance from Billy Phillips and great hitting throughout their lineup. SCHEDULE: RESULTS: New Castle 9 Naamans 8 (9 inn) Naamans 18 Midway 5 Naamans got into the win column tonight vs Midway. The team came out swinging early and often. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. The boys were led by Chris Deely (2-4), JP Sawyer (3-3 with a double); Davis Jones (2-2 with a double). Davis Jones pitched very well over 3 innnings holding Midway to 5 runs on 2 hits. Brett Leichtman helped open it up with a double smashed down the line scoring 2 and Michael Bechtold knocked in 3 runs with a base clearing double. Austin Coughenour (2-4)Matthew Olsen, Nick Robino, Luke Bianchino, Ben Crain also contributed hits. J.P. Sawyer entered in the 4th and preserved the win. Naamans 10 Capitol 0 Ethan Ivins pitched a two hitter. Naamans 18 New Castle 8 The 9s kept rolling last night as they avenged their opening round loss to New Castle. Although the first game was a 9-8 extra inning nail biter, Naamans would have none of that tonight. After falling behind 1-0 after 1, Naamans started to chip away, getting 2 in the second, and 4 runs in the 3rd. New Castle battled back in the fourth to tie the score @ 6. Not wanting to deal with a long drawn out game in that heat, Naamans unleashed in the top of the 5th for 9 runs putting this one out of reach. A team effort all the way around but key contributions came from the following: Michael Bechtold was the star at the plate belting a triple (where he scored on an overthrow); a ground rule double and a single. Dominic Gallo was 2-2; Davis Jones was 3-5; Austin Coughenour was 2-5; Brett Leichtman was 2-2. Hits were added by Nick Robino; Chris Deely; JP Sawyer; Ben Crain and a hustling double by Will Connolly. Davis Jones went 3 2/3 innings for Naamans on the mound and was very strong. JP Sawyer relieved Davis with 2 out in the fourth and got out of a bases loaded jam with a one pitch ground out. Sawyer finished the game on the mound holding New Castle to 2 runs. Naamans continued to throw the leather recording yet another double play, our fourth of the tourney! Brandywine 16 Naamans 15 (7 inn) The 9's from Naamans fell just slightly short last night in an extra inning heartbreaker vs Brandywine, 15-14. Naamans looked early like they were going to run away with it by breaking out 7-0 after 2. Brandywine battled all the way back to take the lead 8-7. Naamans quickly answered restoring the lead @ 12-8. We were on the see saw then as we ended regulation tied @ 14. Somehow, Naamans got out of a no out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 6th. But it was not to be as Brandywine staked two base runners in the bottom of the 7th and singled in the winning run. Naamans certainly brought their bats, pounding out 18 hits. Davis Jones led the way with a monster night. Davis was 4-4 and remained only a triple short of the cycle! Michael Bechtold continue to shine at the plate also going 4-4, including the triple that Davis missed! Austin Coughenour proved that he is clutch both at the plate and in the field. Austin raked a double and a triple and entered to pitch in a very difficult situation and showed maturity beyond his years. Given the heart of this team, it's important to walk down key contributions: Chris Deely - stellar defense and strong at the plate throughout.; J.P. Sawyer, a strong tournament at the plate, some clutch pitching and defense. Brandywine found out early that they weren't running on Naamans as J.P. tossed out the first attempted steal.; Will Connolly - the epitome of leadership - some key hits early in the tourney and a rock behind the plate.; Davis Jones - simply a monster performance.; Michael Bechtold- another huge performance. Michael provided plenty of thrills as several balls hit looked to be leaving the yard!; Matt Olsen- stellar D in left field and some solid hitting versus some tough pitching. Always fun to watch the other team move in and Matty rocket the ball by them!; Austin Coughenour- Simply a primetime player. We call him Hoover as he sucks up everything at third and he brought his bat and his heart to this tourney.; Dominic Gallo - the star of the New Castle revenge game - Dominic made some tremendous plays in the outfield and was Mr. Clutch at the plate.; Brett Leichtman- Brett legged out several hits in this tourney, including launching a base clearing bomb versus Midway to break it wide open. Brett threw solid leather in the outfield as well.; Ben "lightning" Crain - Ben was a huge contributor in his first District Tourney. Simply flying around the bases, covering acres in the outfield and giving us all a thrill versus New Castle as he almost put one out.; Nick Robino- Nick was Mr. Consistency at the plate, putting a charge into the ball every time up! - Another first timer - Nick brought his ferocious bat and great attitude every day; Luke Bianchino - Luke was also Mr. Smooth in center field, making the hard play look easy. Luke also placed the fear of God in every team as squared around to bunt an unleashed his blazing speed. Ethan Ivins - our Ace!, Ethan was again phenomanal, throwing a stellar performance against both New Castle and Capitol. Ethan looked great against Brandywine as well. Overall, an incredible group of kids. Talented, tons of heart. FOR MORE INFORMATION GO TO THE HOST LEAGUE'S WEBSITE Midway Little League 8 YO
SCHEDULE: RESULTS: Naamans 5 Newark Natl Blue 1 Assured by his coaching staff that "tails never fails", Coach Gise won the coin flip and the well-oiled machine that is the Naamans 8s took it from there, stitching together an impressive 5-1 win against a very tough Newark National Blue team playing in their own backyard. Pacing the Big Red Naamans Machine was Henry Gise, who fanned nine over six innings, yielding but a ground ball single in a complete game effort, a baseball rarity for an 8-year old thought probability-wise to be somewhere between a triple play (1:275) and hitting for the cycle (1:800). Naamans’ D was suffocating, and had Gise’s back from pitch one when 3B Tommy Steiner coolly converted a grounder with teeth into the contest’s out #1, and continued in the nailbiting 4th when, with NNLL thinking "big inning" having loaded the bases with one out, 3B Matthew Schell picked a ground ball clean & connected with catcher Quinn Cassidy for the force at home, preserving what was then a 1-0 lead for the good guys. From there, Gise retired 7 of the 8 remaining NNLL hitters, six by strike-out, and Naamans’ offense plain got busy, dropping a 3-spot on Blue in the bottom of the inning when Johnny Holahan’s sac fly scored Noah Haines (1-2, run) who had singled, Ryan Driscoll’s fielder’s choice scored Christian Diamanty (2-2, run) who had singled, and Cassidy’s (1-2) laser to right plated Driscoll. The 3-run effort added to a 1-0 advantage , gained in the second when Austin Hernandez battled NNLL’s tough lefty for 10 pitches before scoring Henry Gise from third (2-2, triple) on a fielder’s choice. DeVonte Church (1-2, run) later singled, swiped two bases, and raced home on the catcher’s throw to second to complete Naamans’ scoring. The solid win sets Naamans up to play Midway this Friday, 6:00. Naamans 9 Midway 3 In a contest that was much closer than the 9-3 score would indicate, Naamans plucky 8s outlasted a game Midway squad with strong pitching, a balanced offensive attack (11 hits from 9 players), and at times absurdly aggressive baserunning. Henry Gise notched another strong start, allowing three runs over 3 1/3 and striking out five, and with Naamans nursing a paltry 5-3 lead and baserunners in scoring position, turned the ball over to Ryan Driscoll who was unconscious, retiring all eight hitters he faced, seven by strike-out (indeed, the K's came in such rapid succession Naamans faithful could not make and hang the K cards fast enough). What defense there was, with all those strike-outs, was spearheaded by 1B Johnny Holahan, who channeled Spiderman in snaring a sure line drive triple in the second, two plays after recovering from another liner that took the first-sacker's glove completely off and scrambling to the bag for the out. Naamans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first the old-fashioned way, as singles by table setters Noah Haines (1-3, 2 runs) and Christian Diamanty (2-3, 3 runs) were followed by a Gise's booming triple (2-3, run, 3 RBIs); Gise then scored on Driscoll's grounder. The door for Midway was uncomfortably ajar after Naamans managed only two over the next two innings, leaving the bases juiced both innings, but pulses returned to something closer to normal in the fourth as Naamans went the "manufactured" route to put two more on the board: DeVonte Church (1-2, run) singled, stole two bases, and scored on the catcher's overthrow to third (sound somewhat familiar?), and Robbie Farnan (1-2, run) singled, stole second, and scored on Jakob Flanagan's perfectly placed bunt. Naamans put together a mini-rally in the fifth, plating two more on three hits that included Quinn Cassidy's (1-2, run) monster double to left and Holahan's (1-2, RBI) run-scoring single. Naamans 5 Brandywine 3 The depth & age of the enmity between Naamans & Brandywine, which makes the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry look like a recent neighborly dispute, has been well-documented and helped form the backdrop for Naamans improbable, come-from-behind 5-3 win last night to keep Big Red comfortably in the winners' bracket. With an uncharacteristic predilection to kick the ball around (3 errors) and issue walks (six), Naamans spotted Brandywine to three runs over the first four innings, which could have easily been more were it not for clutch defensive plays including that by SS Quinn Cassidy who speared an absolute laser for out #2 in the third with the bases full and the infield drawn in. The play followed what appeared to be a standard 1-3 putout, but "blue" pulled out the obscure catcher's interference ruling, awarding the runner first base and causing Naamans' coaching staff to finish off the Rolaids. Notwithstanding that the meat of Naamans' order went down on six pitches and about 45 seconds in the bottom of the fourth, pitching & defense positioned the good guys for the comeback; for the game, Henry Gise, Ryan Driscoll and Johnny Holahan combined on a workmanlike, 8 K one-hitter. Said comeback was undertaken in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the fifth. With Naamans down 3-1, Johnny Holahan coaxed a walk from Brandywine's starter, the only one he issued, followed by Tommy Steiner's infield single. Austin Hernandez, sitting dead red, drove the first pitch into left to plate two; the fleet DeVonte Church then beat out an infield single, and Hernandez raced home with what turned out to be the game-winner on the throw. Robbie Farnan's clutch single plated Church for a much-needed insurance run. Naamans made the plays when they absolutely had to, with 3B Steiner, 2B Christian Diamanty and SS Cassidy each converting chances in the top of the last to squelch Brandywine's comeback bid. Naamans 12 Brandwine 2 (District Champions) The indomitable Naamans 8s completed their run of the tourney table last night by clubbing their way to a convincing 12-2 win against Brandywine, apparently deciding that going to the pool today sounded way better than driving to Newark to face Brandywine yet again. In the contest, Big Red executed to an eerily close degree their coaching staff's game plan (a 1-2-3 defensive top of the first followed by eight runs in the bottom half) by plating six in first, cranking out six line drive singles as part of an 11-hit attack for the game that included a 400' triple to left by Quinn Cassidy (2-2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) who was evidently not crazy about taking one to the solar plexis in the previous at bat. Other members of the multi-hit club for Naamans included Ryan Driscoll (2-3, 2 runs, RBI), Henry Gise (2-2, 2 runs, 3 RBIs) and Tommy Steiner (2-2, 3 RBIs). Although the prospect of 8 year olds doing push-ups was perhaps horrifying to some Naamans moms, the effectiveness of thi s week's two-strike drill as manifested clearly in Naamans' minuscule strike out total of four against tough Brandywine hurlers Gavin Campbell and Austin Horstmyer was undeniable. Naamans pitching was its typically solid self, with Gise & Driscoll combining to hold Brandywine to two infield singles over five efficient frames.
