New Jersey 8, Delaware 5

New Jersey clinched the top-seed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional with an 8-5 victory over Delaware Thursday. Colin Gardner tossed a complete game as he surrendered nine hits, struck out five and walked one.
New Jersey quickly took the lead when German Valdez hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the game. Jon Pena then reached on an error with one out and John Sorentino and tripled him home giving Jersey a 2-0 lead. Zach Gray then followed with an RBI single, plating Sorentino. Gray reached second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on an errant throw to make it 4-0.
Jersey made it 5-0 in the second when Jacob Emert singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a ground out by Brandon Levy.
Delaware got on the board in the third when Kyle Menchaca blooped a two-out single to right. Dalton Mayberry singled Menchaca to third, and he would come around to score on a wild pitch.
New Jersey got the run back in the third, however, as Andrew Enger reached on an error and Valdez was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with one out. Levy followed by slapping a ball to third that spun around the bases and rolled down the line, plating pinch runner Clint Callahan and giving New Jersey a 6-1 lead.
Delaware mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning with two runs, including Tom Dewey’s sacrifice fly. But Jersey came right back again with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
Emert had an RBI single in the inning for New Jersey.
Delaware brought in Menchaca to pitch and he responded by striking out three of the next four batters he faced. In the bottom of the sixth inning - after a 45-minute rain delay - Delaware made its last charge for victory.
Jesse Ellis singled to center and Connor McHugh smoked a two-run home run to center to cut their deficit to 8-5. Gardner settled down and struck out the next two batters and forced to Annone to chop a ball back to the mound, ending the game and clinching the No. 1 seed for New Jersey.
New Jersey will play fourth-seeded Delaware at 5 p.m. today. New York will play Maryland in the other Mid-Atlantic semi today at 11 a.m.

The game ended on a pop up to catcher Matty Lynch. Jim Connolly, Zack Plasmier and Tommy Larson all made nice plays on grounders in the infield. Morgan Johnson made 2 nice catches in center field. RESULTS:
Naamans 14 Wilmington 3
Naamans came out swinging early and kept it up in their 1st tournament game. The kids combined for 15 hits in a 4 inning win against Wilmington - 14-3. A true team effort, but a few notable performances. Nick Rossi hit an absolute moonshot to left center for a double and Will Connolly added two doubles. Not much to say defensively as Ethan Ivins pitched an absolute gem, going 3 innings with 8 strikeouts for the Win. Chris Deely nailed it down in the 4th. A nice defensive play got the second to the last out of the game. As Luke Bianchino fired to second on a steal, the runner on 3rd broke for home: J.P. Sawyer fired a seed back to Luke to put the tag on him for out number 2. Chris Deely struck out the next batter to end the game.

Naamans 15 Midway 2
Brett LeichtmanDavis JonesNaamans 8's continued to swing the bats well in a 15-2 win over Midway Thursday night. Although the final score will be listed as 9-2 due to a reversion back to the 4th inning because of darkness, all the kids shined tonight. Davis Jones and Michael Bechtold combined for 12 strikeouts and gave up only one hit. At the plate contributions came from everywhere. Matt 'little giant' Olsen had two hits and showed how tough he is after getting hit in the back and shaking it off immediately. Chris Dewey provided a key two strike single that scored a run and then he worked hard on the bases to score the second run while being caught in a run down long enough to let the runner ross home. Brett Leichtman continued to stay hot and had a big 2 out single in the 4th to score a run. The highlight at the plate tonight was a 2-run In the park Home Run by Davis Jones. Davis crushed a line drive down the first base line and showed blazing speed around the bases.   Again, we are playing as a team and it shows!

Naamans 11 Canal 3
EthanNaamans came out hot this morning as Chris Deely led off the game against Canal with an inside the park HR. The bats were swinging all day as Naamans pounded out 13 hits in an 11-3 victory over Canal. Michael Bechtold had a 3-3 effort including a double and a triple. Austin Cougenour chose to stay consistent whacking 3 doubles. Luke Bianchino also joined in on the fun with a double of his own. Ethan Ivins recorded his second win of the tournament going 3 innings and booking 7 strikeouts! J.P. Sawyer threw a pretty 7 pitch 4th inning but struggled in the 5th. Davis Jones entered to pick it up for Naamans and close out the 5th and the 6th. The boys had to use the leather a little bit today and they were ready for the challenge as many nice plays in the field were made. Naamans now sits and waits for the Loser's Bracket Winner on Thursday night, 6:00 @ Stanton-Newport.

Naamans 12 Newark National 2 (7/20/06)
Naamans 8's clinched the District 2 title with an impressive 12-2 victory over Newark National. Ethan Ivins continued to shine as he threw 4 great innings, made the defensive play of the game by snagging a rocket line drive up the middle and helping his own cause with a grand slam. Other highlights of the night included Chris Deely's heads up double play while playing second, Davis Jones' smashed triple that stunned Newark National in the first inning and Michael Bechtold's bases clearing double. Despite the individual contributions, Naamans won this as a true team. Everyone contributed including Dominic Gallo's rip to left field; Chris Carlson dislodging a few teeth on a hard shot to the shortstop; Matt Olsen's diving effort in left field; Nick Rossi's heads up defense and baserunnning; J.P. Sawyer's catching and contributions at the plate throughout the tourney; Austin Coughenour's relentless glove at third and strong bat; Luke Bianchino's strong stic k and stellar defense in center and behind the plate; Will Connolly's bat and strong catching; Chris Dewey's tireless base running and Brett Leichtman's clutch hitting. Naamans outscored its 4 opponents 50-10 enroute to a 4 game sweep of District 2. The team truly was and is something special. My heartfelt thanks to all the parents and to John Deely and Jamie Olsen for all that you did to help make this possible.
