Davis then scored on Kevin Laplante's base hit. Richie Windon hit a solo home run in the 4th to stake Naamans to a 3-0 lead. Kevin Laplante was crusing along with a one hitter going into the 5th inning when Canal's bats came alive. Pierce Lamberton hit a three run homer and Tommy Freeland followed with a two run homer as Canal took a 5-3 lead and that's how the scoring ended. Brannan McHugh (double), Thomas Diamanty and Tommy Larson also had hits for Naamans.
Newark National 8 Naamans 5 (8 inn) - Naamans opened the scoring in the 4th inning as Zach Plasmier singled and scored on Doub Ryan's two out double. Naamans added three more in the 5th on Jimmy Pierce's 3 run homer to stake Naamans to a 4-0 lead but Newark National countered with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning, then manufactured a run in the bottom of the 6th to send the game into extra innings. Naamans took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 8th on Richie Windon's base hit and Graham Haines' single, but Newark National quickly tied the score in the bottom of the 8th and won it on Andres deLaveaga's three run walk off homer. Jimmy Pierce (home run), Zach Plasmier and Thomas Diamanty (double) each had two hits for Naamans and Kevin Laplante and Doug Ryan added doubles, Graham Haines and Richie Windon base hits.

Game 1: Brandywine 3, Naamans 2
Naamans Bats Slumber Through Opener
Looking more like early-70s Cindy Brady than mid-90s Brady Anderson, the Naamans 10s stage-frighted their way to a 3-2 loss to rival Brandywine in a failed bid to avenge last year’s first round loss. The jittery troops struck out an appalling 15 times, with Johnny Andreoli’s fourth inning single representing Naamans’ lone hit and with walks and pass balls accounting for what little scoring there was. Notwithstanding the punchless “O”, the good guys were within two routine plays of winning the game, thanks in part to solid pitching from Henry Gise (four hits, two walks and a hit batsman over four frames) and Andrew Conces, who struck out the side in the fifth. With the loss, the 10s face Suburban in what we hope will be a long trip through the loser’s bracket.
Game 2: Naamans 13, Suburban 0
Suburban Falls Victim to Naamans’ Wrath
Naamans took their frustration out on unsuspecting Suburban, plating 13 in three innings on 8 hits, 4 of which were the extra-bases variety. In the first, Ryan Driscoll’s laser to right-center chased Johnny Andreoli who had reached on an error and Andrew Conces who had drawn a walk, and the Naamans dugout seemed to collectively exhale with relief. The game was put away in the following inning in which Naamans sent 11 hitters to the plate, eight of whom scored, with the spark coming from the bat of Matthew Schell whose booming triple to right center evoked comparisons to the Kentucky Derby (the most exciting three minutes in sports). Virtually all of the Naamans 10s joined the hit parade with the notable exception of snake-bit Tommy Steiner, whose three hard-hit balls found the gloves of the third baseman, pitcher, and centerfielder, respectively. Naamans benefitted from excellent pitching by Andrew Conces who struck out the side in the first, and then by Owen Linkhorst, who faced the minimum nine batters over the next three innings to complete the combined no-no. Naamans next takes on Midway.
Game 3: Naamans 4, Midway 1
Naamans Holds On, Tops Midway
1B Ryan Driscoll took Coach Gise’s entreaties to the team to “make a play, son” to heart, when in the first inning he robbed Midway’s 3-hitter of certain extra bases by channeling Plastic Man to snare a liner and step on the bag for the inning-ending double-play. Thus inspired, the Naamans 10s dropped three on Midway in the bottom half of the first, when after singles by Johnny Andreoli and Quinn Cassidy, Henry Gise legged out a moon-shot triple to right and scored on a subsequent pass ball. Austin Hernandez completed the scoring for Naamans in the second by crushing a one-strike fastball into the right-centerfield bleachers for a solo shot. While 4-zip did not feel comfortable to the coaching staff, it was plenty for the 10s’ stingy defense, as P Gise scattered three hits over five innings and struck out five, surrendering only a single run in the fifth, after which the potential Midway rally was snuffed out when with the bases juiced 2B Christian Diamanty gathered in a tough grounder with teeth and flipped to first to end the threat. Reliable closer Andrew Conces made short work of Midway in the sixth to preserve the win and send Naamans on to face Canal.
Game 4: Naamans 6, Canal 5
Naamans Edges Canal in Comeback Thriller
In one for the ages, Naamans 10s frantically rewrote Canal’s sixth-inning comeback script, fashioning an amazing ending of their own, this one a 6-5 win for the good guys. Naamans cruised through four innings behind solid pitching by Andrew Conces (6 Ks, 2 hits) and timely hitting that included Ryan Driscoll’s RBI single, Conces’ RBI double, and a ground ball RBI by Quinn Cassidy that plated Henry Gise, who had tripled. Things got interesting in the fifth, when Canal scratched two runs across on some timely hitting of their own, but with Canal baserunners on 2nd & 3rd, reliever Owen Linkhorst coaxed a groundball to short that went 6-3 in the book. Failing to get the offense going in the bottom of the fifth, Naamans looked to make the slim 3-2 score stand up and were within one strike of doing so when clutch hitting by Canal put Naamans down 5-3 to set up the bottom-of-the-last heroics. Line-drive base hits by Tommy Steiner and Matthew Schell were followed by a four-pitch walk to Austin Hernandez to load the bases. Two outs later, with the drama ratcheted up to “max”, Johnny Andreoli calmly placed a single into left that plated two and tied the game; Ryan Driscoll then continued his raking ways by lacing the game winner down the right field line, as Naamans served notice to the remaining District II field (including Capitol, who they play next) of what stern stuff they are made.
Game 5: Naamans 13, Capitol 3
Too Much Is Enough Against Capitol
Naamans brought their bats to Heeney against Capitol, pounding out thirteen hits en route to a 13-3, four-inning affair. After spotting the guests an unearned run in the first, the good guys went right to work the Earl Weaver way, when singles by Andrew Conces and Johnny Andreoli were followed by Ryan Driscoll’s 3-run blast to right-center. Tommy Steiner later doubled and scored in the inning, and while Naamans had what they needed at that point, they were by no means through. Up 9-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Naamans looked to end this one early, and did so with a 4-run rally sparked by a lead-off single by Steiner, who advanced to third on Quinn Cassidy’s double. Kirk Gibsonian Matthew Schell then cracked a single to right plating both, paving the way for speedy pinchrunner Noah Haines to race home on Christian Diamanty’s line single. Special bunting bat in hand, crestfallen Conces grudgingly went to first on the intentional pass, positioning Andreoli for more heroics. Speed kills too, however, as was the case when Austin Hernandez, who had walked, ended the game by scoring on a wild pitch. Nearly lost in all this offense was a fine outing by P Henry Gise, who went the distance, striking out five and allowing no hits (zoinks!). The win sets up a rematch with Brandywine for whom Naamans has a little something.
Game 6: Naamans 3, Brandywine 1
Naamans Machine Rolls On Vs. Brandywine
The natural order of the universe was set aright last night, as Naamans topped Brandywine 3-1 to advance to the finals against the Gashouse Gorilla-esque Newark National. The win came despite more abysmal 3B coaching from Coach Gise, who is approaching the District II 10 YO Tournament record for getting kids thrown out at 3rd & home (three more last night), proving that talent can sometimes outweigh a dearth of coaching ability. Starter Andrew Conces had modest control issues (6 walks in three innings and one batter in the 4th) but made it work, keeping Brandywine hitters off-balance and allowing nary a hit. Ryan Driscoll came on to pitch the final three innings, looking sharp while keeping Brandywine off the scoreboard, getting fine defensive help including CF Austin Hernandez’s grab of a sinking liner in the 5th. All of Naamans’ offense came in the first when Henry Gise clubbed an 0-2 Austin Horstmyer fastball over the centerfielder’s head, plating Johnny Andreoli and the ridiculously hot Driscoll who had singled & doubled, respectively, then scored on Tommy Steiner scorching single to left. The last time this group faced Newark National? Round One of the 8 YO Tournament in 2007, won by the good guys, 5-3.
Game 7: Naamans 9, Newark National 2
Huge 4th Inning Downs Newark National
Naamans’ 10s got crushy against a tough Newark National team, exploding for 9 runs in the fourth inning to win 9-2 and set up the championship game between the two teams at Naamans on Wednesday. After consecutive singles by Tommy Steiner, Noah Haines and Austin Hernandez, Christian Diamanty drew a walk to force in a run & start the scoring, and Quinn Cassidy kept his hands back on a nasty 0-2 curve ball to double home two more. Ryan Driscoll was off the hook again, going 3-4 with an RBI, and the remaining air left the sails on the HMS Newark National when Matthew Schell & Hernandez smacked singles to chase the 7th, 8th & 9th runs of the inning. Tasked with shutting down the vaunted NNLL offense, P Henry Gise responded in spades, holding the foe to two hits (albeit one landed on top of shopping center in left-center). The keibash was put on any thoughts of a comeback by Naamans’ reliable “D”, as exemplified by 2B Christian Diamanty, who converted four tough chances in the final three innings. Crafty lefty Owen Linkhorst came on to retire the final hitter by strike-out.
Game 8: Naamans 9, Newark National 2
It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll)
When in 1975 AC/DC front man Bon Scott first spat out these lyrics, Coach Haines had an afro, Coach Gise was prizing his new Cliff Richard 45, and Coach Steiner was cementing his status as nursery school enforcer. Notwithstanding their age, the lyrics rang hauntingly true for Naamans 10s’ successful & improbable 7-win march through the loser’s bracket of this year’s 10 YO District II tourney to emerge its champion, capped off by their thrilling beat-down of erstwhile Williamsport-bound Newark National, by the familiar score of 9-2. Scattering four hits in a gutsy complete game effort, P Ryan Driscoll came up huge, as did (again) District II’s stingiest defense, the tone for which was a scab-producing, diving grab by SS Henry Gise of an absolute rocket off the bat of NNLL’s leadoff hitter. Later, with Naamans nursing a 5-1 lead and Newark National trying to rally, LF Noah Haines turned what appeared might be an extra base hit into a routine L-7, and 1B Johnny Andreoli ranged to his right to make a rolling stop of a squibber, flipping to 2B Jakob Flanagan who alertly covered first. Flanagan’s two singles also keyed Naamans’ offense, toward which contributions were made (again) up & down the line-up, notably Austin Hernandez (2-3, two doubles), Gise (3-4, two doubles) and Matthew Schell, whose clutch triple in the top of the 3rd plated two. It was another quietly efficient game behind the dish for the tournament’s most solid catcher, Tommy Steiner, for whom pass balls were a complete non-factor.

Canal 9 Naamans 4 - Joey Lungen went 4-4 with 2 doubles to lead Canal's 15-hit attack. Winning pitcher Kevin Buglio struck out 7 in 4.3 innings, allowing only 2 hits.
Naamans 6 Newark National 3 - Matt Arrabal had 4 hits and scored 2 runs; Bryce Wallace had 3 hits; and the winning pitcher, Reade Aiello had 2 hits. Nick Zegna had an RBI triple for Newark National.
Naamans 19 Wilmington 0 - Naamans scored early and often, eliminating Wilmington in 4 innings. Their pitcher Edelman allowed just 2 hits and struck out 9. He also had a great day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a triple, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Teammate Matt Arrabal went 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored, maintaining his #2 tourney batting average of .833. Dillan Coughenour was 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored, and Donahue added 2 triples.
Naamans 10 Brandywine 9 - Naamans overcame a 6-2 deficit by scoring 7 runs on 5 hits in the 3rd inning. Then they held on to win, with Matt Arrabal pitching out of jams in the 4th and 6th innings. He got two huge assists in the final 2 frames, when catcher Dillon Coughenour threw out base runners at 2nd base. Arrabal was 2-for-4 with a triple, RJ Edelman was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored, and starting pitcher Reade Aiello was 3-for-4. Brandywine's center fielder Wayne Pritchett blasted a 3-run homer over the center field fence, the only home run in the tournament. He also had an RBI double. Patrick Barker was 4-for-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Naamans 21 Newark American 4 - Naamans scored all the runs they would need in the first inning (5) and won handily in an unexpectedly one-sided game. RJ Edelman went the distance for Naamans, hurling a 5-hitter with 10 strikeouts. (He now shares the Tourney lead of 19 strikeouts with Newark American's Josh Maguire.) Naamans' hitting clinic featured 14 hits from up and down the lineup, and they ran the bases very well. Will Hoffman, batting in the #7 spot, was 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Matt Arrabal, RJ Edelman and Bryce Wallace each scored 4 times. Leadoff batter Arrabal smacked 2 doubles and Edelman added 1. Wallace tripled and Matt Steptoe added a double. Newark American's Ben Dewberry had his second triple of the tournament.
Naamans 15 Suburban 4 - Naamans is on a roll. Big time. They won for the 3rd straight night, and for the second night in a row, it only took 4 innings. Matt Arrobal set the tone early when he blasted a pitch 210 feet to dead center field. He then proceeded to pitch a 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts for the win. He had plenty of defense behind him, and plenty of offense too. He scored the next 3 times he came to the plate, and so did RJ Edelman. Edelman tripled and singled twice, with 3 RBIs. Naamans' #3 and #4 batters each went 2-for-4, with Reade Aiello scoring 3 times, and Dillon Coughenour scoring once. Jack Prosceno had an RBI double and scored twice from the #9 spot. Arrobal leads all hitters in the Tournament with a .789 batting average. For Suburban, Matt Carrol was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.
Canal 7 Naamans 4 - The tournament started the way it ended, with Canal beating Naamans, this time 7-4. It was another exciting & very well-played game, and lived up to the Championship billing. Canal's Cole Humes led off with a walk and scored on Matthew Kohan's single. Kohan then scored on Bryce Carey's RBI single. The inning would have been worse for Naamans if not for the hustle of catcher Jacob Miesel. He threw out 2 runners in the inning, at 2nd and 3rd base. Naamans' RJ Edelman reached on a one-out walk, and Reade Aiello followed with a single. With runners at the corners, Naamans attempted a double steal, with Edelman scoring to make the score 2-1. Aiello held Canal in check in the 2nd and 3rd innings, while Naamans tied the game 2-2 on an RBI single by Matt Arrabal. Canal got the breaks they needed in the pivotal 4th inning. With Naamans' subs on defense, Bryce Carey led off with a triple. Following a walk and a hit batsman, Canal had the bases juiced with no out. Aiello then struck out 2 batters and it appeared Naamans had dodged a bullet. But Joey Lungen got a bases-loaded walk to give Canal a 3-2 lead. Then the hot-hitting Kevin Buglio hit a hard single to score 2 runs. Naamans threw the ball around a bit, and another run scored. A hustling Edelman beat Buglio to the third base bag for the tag, to end the inning. But the damage was done, and it seemed to take some air out of Naamans. After Canal's starting pitcher Buglio reached his maximum pitch count in the 5th inning, Naamans rallied for two runs. But Canal brought in Cole Humes to put out the fire. He did what few other pitchers had been able to do during the entire tournament - He retired the hot-hitting leadoff batter Matt Arrabal to end the 5th, and then pitched a 1-2-3 6th inning to clinch the victory for Canal. Winning pitcher Kevin Buglio had 3 hits and 3 RBIs to lead Canal. He boosted his batting average up to .733, to win the batting title (eeking past Naamans' Matt Arrabal's .696). Buglio fired 4 more strikeouts, to put him in a Tourney-high tie at 20, with Naaman's RJ Edelman. Buglio also made two nice plays at third base to end the game. Canal's Bryce Carey went 3 for 3 with a triple. Cole Humes scored two runs. Losing pitcher Reade Aiello struck out 5 and had two singles for Naamans. Canal won 5 straight games to earn the Title. Naamans won 5 straight in the losers bracket, including 3 in 3 days this week.
