MAJOR PLAYOFFS * Friday, June 19, 2009 (Championship) Homecraft 10 Mattern 4 - This final game for the championship was one that exhibited much offense, but in the end, defense stole the show. Homecraft started quickly with 3 consecutive singles in the 1st inning by Brannon McHugh, DJ Thommes and Austin Coughenour, scoring Brannon and giving Homecraft a 1-0 lead. Henry Gise singled for Mattern in the bottom of the inning and with 2 outs, Zack Plasmier hit a shot to deep center that was destined to leave the park and give Mattern the lead. Instead, DJ Thommes leaped and stole the ball from mid-air preserving Homecraft's precarious 1-run lead. Feeding off of DJ's catch, Homecraft went on an offensive tear knocking out 5 hits and scoring 5 runs in the top of the 2nd. Quinn Cassidy lead off the 2nd with a single up the middle, followed by an RBI double to left field by Chris Carlson scoring Ryan Ifkovitz. Jimmy Connolly and Davis Jones then hit back to back singles, scoring Carlson and setting up men on 1st and 2nd for Brannon McHugh who proceeded to hit a 3-run bomb to left center to make it 6-1. Mattern got 1 back in the bottom of the 2nd on a solo shot by Matthew Gallagher which gave the Mattern a major boost. But, as Mattern was rallying with 2 men on and 2 outs, once again DJ Thommes came up with a big defensive save as Richie Windon smoked a "see ya" ball to deep left center that DJ snared before it had a chance to land and ended Mattern's rally. Homecraft tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd when Will Connolly led off the inning with a single, and was eventually driven home by an RBI single from Matty Arrabal. Mattern came back in the bottom of the 3rd with a run of their own on an RBI fielder's choice from Ian Lloyd knocking in Henry Gise. Mattern then added another run in the bottom of the 4th as Matty Schell started the inning off with a single and was driven home on a double by Scotty Davis, but once again Homecraft escaped without any further damage with a score of 7-3. In the top of the 5th, more defense came into play this time for Mattern. Jimmy Connolly and Davis Jones both singled for Homecraft with two outs bringing up Brannon McHugh who doubled to left center. Scotty Davis fielded the ball threw a bullet to Zach Plasmier who in turn threw a strike to catcher Richie Windon nailing Davis Jones at home. Mattern, however, wasn't able to turn the momentum back in their favor as Homecraft's Austin Coughenour came in to pitch a perfect 1-2-3 5th inning. Homecraft scored 2 insurance runs in the top of the 6th on Matty Arrabal's shot to center field plating DJ Thommes and Will Connolly who had both drawn walks. Mattern was able to put together a final rally in the bottom of the 6th as Matthew Hogan walked and scored on Richie Windon's double, but came up short as Austin Coughenour settled down, got the next two batters to end the rally and Homecraft won the 2009 Naamans Major League Championship. Also, thanks to umpires Andy Sopirak, Don Sawyer and Brett Pierce for a superior job under tense conditions.

Kevin LaPlante doubled in the bottom of the 7th, and JP Sawyer hit a walk off single to score Kevin and secure the win. Pepperidge had solid pitching by Danny DePaulo and Graham Haines. 9 yr old RJ Edelman had his first major league hit. Graham Haines, Ben Crain, Matty Lynch, and Danny DePaulo, also had a hit.

TRIPLE A

AAA PLAYOFFS * Saturday, June 13, 2009 (Championship) Tiki Angels 6 Friendly Cubs 5 - The Tiki Angels captured the AAA crown by defeating the Friendly Gift Shop Cubs, 6-5 in a well- played, back-and-forth pitcher's duel. For the sixth straight game, Sam Barrett was the Angel starting pitcher, and for the sixth straight game he held the opposition in check - limiting the Cubs to 3 runs before passing the baton to Adam Reynolds with a no outs in the top of the third, and the Cubs' Peter Durgin on first. Reynolds threw bb's the rest of the way, hurling a spectacular 4 innings on a scant 58 pitches- giving up just one hit, striking out six, walking two, and with 38 of the 58 pitches going for strikes. Adam was supported by a strong Angel defense, led by the keystone combo of Caroline Silverman and Daniel Smith, who combined on a nifty 4-6 putout to erase Will Steenkamer at second with one out in the 4th, and traded assists in the 5th and 6th. The Angel offense was paced by the scorching Will Lundstrom , who followed up his 3-3 two RBI performance in the semi-finals with an equally perfect 2-2 3 RBI performance in the championship. Will wouldn't have had the RBI opportunities without Matt Rosenthal and Caroline Silverman being on base all six times they appeared at the plate. Each drew 3 walks and scored 2 times. Smith capped an outstanding playoff run of his own with a sharp single to center, after which he scored on a George Steinhoff fielder's choice. The Cubbies put up a fantastic effort in defeat. Starting pitcher Will Steenkamer whiffed 7 Angels and allowed just three hits, and reliever Austin Leshock yielded just one run over the final two frames. Leshcok received a huge assist from CF Will Borda, who turned Daniel Smith's sure double into a harmless out with a spectacular diving catch. The Cub batters were led by Jacob Meisel, whose first inning single to right plated Michael Minnick for the first Cubs run, and Matthew Greenley, who crushed a Reynolds heater to left for a standup double in the fifth. Leshock added an RBI on a fielder's choice. With the Angels clinging to a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth, Reynolds calmly k'd the leadoff batter with a nasty changeup, and then induced a harmless two hopper back to the mound for out #2. As the Halo faithful started to rise, Adam fired one last fastball to the speedy Rhodunda, who slapped a troublesome-looking grounder up the middle, but SS Daniel Smith snared it off the short hop just shy of second base and flipped to Steinhoff at first before a pile of red jerseys rushed the mound to celebrate. Congratulations to the Cubs and Angels on a great game and a fantastic season.
* Thursday, June 11, 2009 Tiki 6 YCST 5 - The Tiki Music Angels advanced to the AAA Championship Game with a nail biting 6-5 victory over the gritty YCST Tigers. Will Lundstrom paced Angel attack with three hits and a pair of RBIs, and Aaron Macha, Tommy Donofrio and Daniel Smith notched the other Angel hits. Angel pitchers Lundstrom, Donofrio, Sam Barrett, Adam Reynolds, and George Steinhoff combined to hold the Tigers to 5 runs, in large part due to some fine defensive work behind them. In the fourth, Macha ranged to the deepest corner of Heeney's rightfield to track down Ryan Maffia's towering blast to save runs, and in the sixth Lundstrom preserved a 5-5 tie by expertly blocking the plate on a tagout at home. Tiger pitchers Sam Skammer, Patrick Harkins, Ryan Maffia, Jeffrey Grantham and Noah NieKamp were just as effective as their Angel counterparts, limiting the Halos to a scant 6 hits - with a big assist from centerfielder Pedro de Souza Healy, who converted three Angel shots into harmless outs. The Tiger one-two punch of Jake Mottola and Luke Stirparo combined to reach base 5 of 6 times, and scored 4 of the 5 Tiger runs. Congratulations to both teams on fine seasons and a fantastic game. Friendly 10 Hartnett 9

Tiki Angels 4 Friendly Gift Shop Cubs 1 - Monday night's extraordinary AAA baseball game provided ample evidence of the old baseball adage that good pitching beats good hitting. Both teams had pitchers absolutely dealing last night as the Cub trio of Will Steenkamer, Matty Steptoe and Michael Minnick held the normally high-powered Angel offense to a mere 3 hits, while the Halo duo of Sam Barrett and Adam Reynolds threw darts, combining on a 4 hitter, with 13 strikeouts against only 4 walks. Reynolds had two of the Angels' three hits, with Barrett notching the other one, and Minnick had a perfect 3-3 night at the plate, blasting three doubles and plating Chris Lee for the Cub run. The Angels' Noah Friedkin added an RBI.

Angels 7 Tigers 6 - With the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Daniel Smith squinted through the Squires gloaming, and capped an epic at 8 pitch at-bat with a sharp single to right, scoring Will Lundstrom for the 7-6 win for the Angels. Lundstrom and Caroline Silverman led the Angels with two hits apiece, and Grace Dunleavy and Bryan Steinberg continued their torrid hitting with a hit apiece. Angels 5 Astros 4 - Angels' pitchers Adam Reynolds, Tommy Donofrio and George Steinhoff combined on a 3 hitter to lead the Angels to a hard fought 5-4 victory over the Astros. Reynolds faced the minimum 9 batters through 3 innings, thanks in part to an unassisted double play by Steinhoff at 1B and a fine running catch by CF Matt Rosenthal. Steinhoff earned his first AAA save by bailing the Angels out of a 5th inning bases loaded two out jam with a clutch strikeout, and then retiring the Astros in the 6th. Astros' pitchers Jack Williams and Ryan Gallagher had the Angel batters off-balance all night, with Gallagher striking out 4 without a walk over 2+ innings and Williams whiffing 4 as well. Tha Angels pieced together a two out, two run rally in the first, on consecutive RBI singles from Will Lundstom and Donofrio, For the Astros, Gallagher plated two on a seeing eye single in the fourth. With the Angels holding onto a 5-4 lead in the 6th, the Astros' Jacob Clarke led off with a clean single, as did Grant Grier, but Angel 2B Caroline Silverman took the relay on Grier's hit and fired a strike to 3B Donofrio who just beat Clarke with the tag for the first out. After a strikeout, Steinhoff snared Ryan Fisher's laser up the middle for out #3 to end the game.

Tiki Angels 12 Friendly Gift Shop Cubs 8 - The Angels and Cubs entertained the AAA faithful with a nail-biting 12-8 slugfest that saw 9 lead changes. Caroline Silverman, Daniel Smith, Harry Geisenberger and Will Lundstrom added RBI singles for the Angels. Angel starting pitcher George Steinhoff worked 2 frames, striking out 4 and walking none.Cub pitcher Will Steenkamer pitched 2 solid innings, and continued his recent power surge, blasting a triple to the wall in right field. Only Angel rightfielder Grace Dunleavy's strong throw kept Steenkamer from circling the bases. Three innings later Steenkamer just missed his second extra base hit of the game when Angel CF Matt Rosenthal ran down a gapper to right center for the defensive play of the game.

Tigers 9 Angels 8 - The Tigers' Nathaniel Ruhl snapped an 8-8 tie with a bases loaded drive to right field to score Cory Ruggiero with the winning run. Ruhl's drive capped a 4 run 6th for the Tigers, who came all the way back from an early 7-1 deficit. Jeffrey Grantham picked up the win in relief of Sam Skammer and Ryan Maffia, who held the Angels in check after some early troubles. Grantham helped his own cause with a towering double to left, plating Luke Stirparo and Noah NieKamp. Tommy Donofrio and Matt Rosenthal paced the Angels with two hits apiece, and George Steinhoff added an RBI double. Starting pitcher Aaron Macha whiffed the first 4 Tigers he faced on his way to two strong innings, and added a single to rightfield and a run. Will Lundstrom knocked in his Angels-leading 13th run of the year.

Angels 12 Tigers 4 - Angel pitchers Adam Reynolds, Caroline Silverman and Daniel Smith held the Tigers in check from the mound, and George Steinhoff ran his consecutive hit streak to 6 straight at bats to lead the Angels to a hard fought 12-4 win over the Tigers. The Cubs Austin LeShock baffled the Angles, holding them to a single run into the bottom of the fourth. The Angels’ Tommy Donofrio and Will Lundstrom had two RBIs each and Caroline Silverman smashed a double to deep right for the only extra base hit of the game. The Tigers’ Luke Stirparo notched his first AAA hit, but the rest of the Tiger bats found Angel gloves all game. The Tigers’ Patrick Harkins impressed in his season debut on the mound, striking out the side in the home third. The Angels’ Sam Barrrett notched his first win of the season with 2 hitless innings, after which Donofrio struckout the side in the visitors third.
