Lax NewZ: Go the Hawks. 2007 Title Winners

Go the Hawks. 2007 Title Winners
After a 4 year wait and three 3rd place finishes the Harbour Hawks have again won the New Zealand League title.

In a hard fought game at Orakei Domain, last seasons title holders, the Tamaki Titans home ground, the Hawks defeated the Wildcats 15-6 to take the title for the second time in 5 years.

With strong first and last quarters the Hawks always looked strong and although the score doesnt reflect the resistance or determination of the Wildcats side the powerhouse offence of the Hawks, supported again by Vinnie Minett in the mid field, went on a first quarter scoring rampage to set up a the game win.

Anchored by US inmport Nick Wilsey at the back and Damian Treanor in goal the Hawks held through the 2nd and 3rd quarters before romping home in the final quarter.

After a mixed start to the season, defeating previous seasons finalists, both the Cats and Titans but losing to the cellar dwellers Varsity Blue Devils and Chiefz, few would have bet on the Hawks claiming a title.

Their chances were reduced even further after losing early season points for failing to provide referees. A situation complicated by injuries and unavailibility of players.

Somehow in what has become a symbol of Hawks spirit they managed to turn it around and after scraping into the playoffs in 4th place scored a surprising season victory.

Finally one must feel for the Wildcats. Many would have predicted this to be their season.

With good results all year and after recruiting National Squad keeper Roger Snow from the Collge Rifles they were obvious favourite but this was their 4th final loss in 4 seasons, surely the time must come soon for these perennial princes to become kings.
